President's Corner

Well, it hardly seems like a year has passed with me at the helm of this ship, but it has.  This is my last President’s Message, and I want to take this opportunity to deservedly thank the men who served on my Board.  Tom Link cares very much about the Club, and will do a great job as your next Prez.  Al Ostberg is meticulous when it comes to watching our spending habits, and Mike Vaughn is extraordinarily THOROUGH!  Rich Dennison has done a great job at the tasks he has undertaken and I expect him to continue that trend next year in our Club’s most important job.  Jerry Leininger weathered his first year on the Board with great poise and diligent hard work, while Rick Evans successfully implemented some innovative improvements to his tasks.  Nick Zamora did a great job in the position that every President finds the toughest to fill and Mike Marmer educated us all on how to play the game correctly.  Don Russell has the respect of we “hard liners” and is much more pleasant and enjoyable than his perceived persona!  Cairo Piercy has served with distinction for several years and will be missed as his relocation makes it tough for him to commit to the Board.  And finally, my predecessor, Greg O’Brien, leaves the Board after filling many positions with distinction, poise and commitment.  If you get the chance, thank these guys for their efforts, as they are responsible for making our Club the great experience that we all enjoy.

I encourage you to come to the December meeting; we will try to keep the business to a minimum so Rick can raffle his brains out!  Also, don’t delay in entering the Christmas Shotgun, as Paul Goydos is scheduled to do a “Beat the Pro” and the new 5-some format was very well received last year--it could very well fill before the meeting.  I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous and healthy 2004.  It has been an honor to serve as your President.

Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held November 11, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a dinner consisting of chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggies, and a roll for your generous donation of $6.  President Bob Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.  Bob had all the veterans in attendance stand up to be recognized.  A big round of applause for those who served so we may continue to live with freedom in our great country.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Our life membership group consisted of Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

New members introduced themselves and went on the introductory tour.

Greg O’Brien took the podium to advise on tonight’s election of officers for the 2004 Board of Directors.  The candidates were identified; ballots handed out, and then collected.  Greg and two others, including one new member, went to tally the vote.

Pres. Livingstone introduced Mez White.  Mez is our new course General Manager, who was open to questions from the floor.  He had to respond to inquiries about sand containers placed strategically around the course to use as refills, and to the bunker on the left front of hole #2 being full of rocks.

Team Play: Most of this year’s team has been notified.  The team will be posted on the website and at the course.  Tom McCutcheon, Thursday captain is still working to get a full team.  If you didn’t make the Saturday team this year and can play on Thursday give Tom or Roger Scaife a call.

Richard Scoville provided update that SCGA delegates will be meeting at Virginia C.C. about the new Handicap system.  As of next month all clubs will have access to the new system, and on-line, real-time capabilities for anywhere you’ll be posting your score.

Committee Reports:

No one had any questions for Commissioner Ray McElhenney.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: SCGA Member Course was a success.  We had 58 players.  The course was in pretty good shape considering how wet it was.  Results are posted.  As a new item, Nick provided a best Rotten Team award.  Nick hopes for us to see some new courses next year.  See him if you have an idea, he is open to suggestions.  Terry Fulford asked about the posting of scores that were played in pick-and-lick condition.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike will have new Rules of Golf books available at the Christmas tournament.  Mike commented that it has a new format.  One change this year is you can move loose impediments on the green.  Mel Collins asked about taking relief near the green from a sprinkler head.  Tom McCutcheon interjected that this is only available via a local rule.  We do not have that local rule here.

Don Russell – News Editor: Nothing to report.

Cairo Piercy – GOM: Don “Dad” Marmion took low Net with a 65, while Tony Glorioso shot an even par 72 for the Gross prize for the month of October.  Cairo noted that he has been on the Board of Directors for 4 years and has enjoyed it.  Cairo strongly recommends anyone who can be on the ‘Board to do so in giving back to the Club.

Rich Dennison – All of the El Dorado Cup matches have gotten to the final rounds.  Rich then read the pairings.  He is running the $30 Derby at the Christmas tournament.  Get your money to him if you would like to join this group ASAP.

Greg O’Brien re-took the podium to announce the winners in the election.  President – Tom Link, Vice President – Rich Dennison, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, and Directors Dennis Tramer and Mike Marmer.  Greg offered congratulations to the winners.

Tom Link – Tournaments: We’ll have cart paths only Saturday at the Modified Stableford as they have just overseeded.  The Christmas tournament is $57 to ride and $45 to walk.  The format will be a 5-some blind draw with an A-B-C-D-E flight player on each team.  Derbies available will be $20 (or $25) Bill Johnson, $30 Rich Dennison, $40 Tom Conlisk, and $50 Tom Link.

Old Business – Saturday’s tournament is the last day to renew to not be removed from the January, 2004 SCGA roster.  Trophies were handed out to the winners of the Flighted Club Championship.  3rd flight David Pemberton, 2nd flight Wayne Setinek, 1st flight Todd Thiele, and taking both the Senior and Club Championship was Jim Fuchs (2 plaques for Jim).

New Business – None

Meeting adjourned.

Rick Evans held the raffle without a glitch with the assistance of Don Russell and Terry Henson.  As always, great prizes were there to be won.

50-50 drawing pulled in $68 tonight.  $34 went to Ed Lane and $34 went to Jr. Golf.

Membership drawing tonight was for $150.  Number of Larry Simpson was drawn.  Larry was not at the meeting tonight.  Next month the prize will be $160.  We will draw numbers until we hit a member who is at the meeting.

Tournament Chairman

We are at the end of the year and the Annual Christmas Tournament is upon us.  The Field will be limited to the First 180 Players that sign up.  We will divide the field into five groups by Handicap.  The lowest 36 players will be “A”; the next 36 players will be “B”, next 36 “C” and so forth.  One player will be drawn from each group to form a 5 some.  The Tournament will not be Flighted and there will not be a Gross Prize. The Format will be 3 best ball net.  The El Dorado Men’s Club pays for the Course all Day, join us, it is a lot of fun.  After the Tournament we will have our annual “Derby’s”, you must play in the Tournament to play in any Derby.

The results of the November Stableford are published in the Newsletter and on the Website.  Congratulations to our all of you that cashed, the scoring was very competitive.

I want to thank all of the Board members for their support this year.  All of them put in many hours to have these Tournaments come off on time and they have hopefully been enjoyable for all of you to play in.  Thanks, it has been rewarding and fun.

Rich Dennison will be taking sign ups for the January Scramble at the December Meeting, see you then.

Commissioner's Report

Well gentleman this will be my last article for the year 2003!! It has really been an interesting first year. With the Skylinks Project consuming almost everyone's time, not a great deal has taken place with the commission. During our latest meeting some items came up and I will write about those a little later in this article. First the run of the mill monthly "stuff". The rounds off golf were again down for the month, with Skylinks being closed, that comes as no surprise. The combined rounds for all our courses showed a  19.05% decrease from last year , and year to date we are down 6.83%. El Dorado was up for November by 6.65%. We are still down for the year by 3.50%. The revenue generated by the courses is still very much alive and well. For November over 1 million dollars were generated by our courses. This revenue includes everything from lessons, to alcoholic beverages. The C.I.P. fund is doing very well. The balance is at 664 Thousand, and growing each month. Junior Golf has had another fine year, with over 73 Grand in that account. If you are not aware our Club donates $500.00 each year to the Jr. Golf Fund, and at our meeting Bob Livingstone gave our $500.00 check to Lisa Georgeson. As I mentioned several topics arose at the November meeting. The first being a change in the weekend reservation policy. Effective December 1ST. when you reserve a time on either a Friday, Saturday or Sunday the person reserving the time will be required to provide a valid credit card number. This change was actually adopted and approved in November of 2001, but it is now just taking effect. A question regarding exactly how this will work was brought up. If your group no shows there will be a $10.00 charge per player charged against the credit card used. If there are one or two players that no show,  a charge for each player that did not show will be applied to that credit card. At this point American Golf is looking into the situation where the group is possibly filled from a stand by list, so there is still some questions that have to be answered. Also there is a 48 window in which you can cancel and nothing will be applied to the credit card. This policy has been in effect at some other American Golf Courses and it apparently has worked well??

The second topic that was touched on was actually the Fourth Amendment to the lease with American Golf. This amendment was put together by the City of Long Beach and American Golf. It was done so that during the Skylinks project each party received certain concessions. I will obviously not go into every item, but the possible fee increase is an interesting situation. During and only during the Skylinks project American golf can raise the fees, but only if it stays in line with the 'CPI' known as the Consumer Price Index. This can only be done on an annual basis. This does not mean that we will be getting an increase, and it does not extend beyond the time frame of the Skylinks Project. In fact the City and American Golf will be "hammering" out a new contract that will be in place in 2004. If there are any further questions regarding these two new topics, I will be available at our X-MAS meeting. Well that is enough said. No meeting next month so my next update will be in January 2004. If I do not see you have a great holiday season.
