President's Corner

Well, it was 87 today (Super Bowl Sunday), yet I just lost a recruit to Iowa State, where it was in the low teens today…how does that happen? My condolences to all of you Raider fans out there, but as someone who has despised them with the white-hot intensity of a thousand Super Novas since the early 70’s, I’m simply ecstatic!

We had a great turnout for the January Meeting and both the raffle and 50/50 pot had the best participation in awhile. Buy your tickets early in February, as we will again have a few drawings during the meeting, and Rick Evans has a financial bonus to random ticket buyers, which will be addressed at a later time. Also at the meeting we will get a recap of Nick Zamora’s first away trip, Thursday and Saturday Team results and news from Cairo about this month’s Golfer of the Year tournament. Don’t miss it!

Our first tourney of the year went off without much a hitch. Early morning fog hurt a little, but the last group finished while still able to see the little red "gimme" tape on the flagstick. Congrats to everyone who won something (that did not include my group, unfortunately). Slow play was again discussed during this event, which many feel should be played in under 5 hours. For about the last half of the field, this was not the case. We need input from you members about how upsetting slow play can be, because if we are to address it effectively, we (i.e. the Board members and volunteers who work the tournaments) will have to be very forceful in our actions. No one hates slow play more than I do, but at the same time, I feel that most members feel our tournaments are more of a collegial or fraternal day of enjoyment, in which case it is not worth the effort to upset speed people while speeding them along. Please let Tom Link or any other Board member you know what your feelings are on this issue, so we may proceed accordingly.

Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held January 14, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Hearty appetites enjoyed dinner for the nominal $6. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

As usual for the January meeting several new members were in attendance.  They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. There was a blend of blue collar through legal in the mix.  Greg O’Brien took them on an informative tour.

Our Golf Commissioner, Ray McElhenney, was not able to make tonight’s meeting.  There was no Commission meeting held in January so he would not have had anything new to report.

Team Play, Saturday – Jim Baber noted that we opened the year last Saturday at home Vs. Fullerton and won 28 – 20.  Low rounds went to Tom Conlisk and Wayne Aho who shot net 68.    Jim stated that Jorge and Tony did a great job in getting the tee times off in time, and the restaurant did a good job too.  We play Fullerton there this Saturday.

Team Play – Tom McCutcheon; Tom said that we played Industry here last Thursday, and thank you.  (You can read between the lines on that on).

 Committee Reports:

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: When new members turn in cards for establishing their handicap Jerry wants them all to be sure to include their printed complete name, date of round, and the tee that you played.  Without the tee noted the rounds are posted as blue.  Tournament indexes can be seen on the website.

Mike McMahon and Cairo Piercy – GOM: McMahon needed to declare the December GOM winners.  Only two cards turned in for Gross. Jim Fuchs took the honors with a 71.  Net was taken by John Davis with a 75 – 11 for a 64.  Mike stressed the importance in completing GOM card per the rules for GOM.  Your card must note your name, date of the round, SCGA number, the tee you played, the correct number of stokes you receive for that tee (for net players), your signature, and another Men’s Club member’s signature for the attest.  GOM must also be boldly written across the face of the card.  The 2002 Golfer of the Year tournament is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, 2003.  This will be for both, Gross and Net.  Mike read off the monthly winners from 2002.  Cairo Piercy told the membership that he would be hosting the GOY, and asked everyone to thank Mike for his efforts last year.

In effort to enlighten the meeting Pres. Livingstone had a raffle number called out for $15.  Winner Mark Ziegenhagen.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick wants the new membership to know that we have away tournaments at other courses.  Cost is usually $65 to $85, and usually pay to 3 or 4 places with Special Events such as Closest to the Pin that are a lot of fun.  See Nick so you can get in on these great outings.  Nick is looking for suggestions for courses on where we would like to hold an away tournament.  This will help him in planning for next year.  February 2nd is San Luis Rey.  Cost is $75 for golf, cart, and tournament fees.  Format will be a 4-man Waltz where the team scores 1 best ball on the first hole, 2 on the second, 3 on the 3rd, 1 on the 4th, 2 on the 5th, and so on in a 1-2-3 pattern through the completion of 18 holes.  We are playing General Old on Sunday, March 2nd.  Cost for the General is $65, not $75 as was noted in the December Newsletter.

Rich Dennison – Special Events: Rick hopes that everyone continues to support the Club in the raffle as we did tonight.  As well as the prize raffle, Rick has collected $85 for the 50/50 drawing.  There won’t be any skins this Sunday as the format is a Scramble.  He will have Special Events on the par 3 holes, as well as a long drive for each flight.  Rick will gladly listen to any suggestions for was to mix it up, especially from new members who might like something that was done at another club they’ve belonged to.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike just wants everyone to know that he is the new bad guy in town, your Rules Chairman.  Mike is to attend a 4-day rules seminar in March, which should have him up to speed on today’s rules.  The new 100 and 150-yard bushes are to be played as immovable obstruction where you will get relief for swing or stance, not line of sight.  This is a Local Rule, which may someday change.  Now that Team Play is going on Mike updated the Club on 4-ball ruling when practice on the green is allowed.  Mike gave a scenario, and after a few incorrect answers, Mike disclosed that one couldn’t practice until after both you and your partner has holed out.

Pres. Livingstone called out another raffle ticket.  This one was for $20.  Winner Alex Gay.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: IN April we will start having a Putting Contest before the monthly meeting.  If you have any suggestions please place them in the Men’s Club drawer in the Pro Shop.  Let him now anything you want to do.

Tom Link – Tournaments: Tom is open to suggestions for the Christmas tournament, 5-some, 6-some, or whatever.  The Derbies after the X-Mas tournament were a lot of fun.  The January tournament is full.  1st tee time is 6:27 and the last is 12:00 Noon.  You will need to concentrate on speed of play.  Be sure to keep moving.  If you lose a ball forget about it and go on as you’re not going to use that ball anyway.  After the first putters get close to the hole they should move on to the next hole to tee up.  15 names were called for signing up for the February tournament.

Old Business: Greg O’Brien wanted to discuss the Hole In One insurance fund.  We presently have over $600 in it now.  The list is posted at the course.  Verify that you are in it.  If you are not get him $3 for your insurance payment.  This is for any Hole In One at home during one of our monthly tournaments

New Business – Pres. Livingstone noted that he had an announcement, not an endorsement, that David Solomon, once Club Champion and Starter here at El Dorado has turned pro.  He Dave has gone through the first stage of his tour qualifying and is looking for someone / anyone  to sponsor / take stock in him.  Last year Dave made more money than he spent.

Terry Fulford noted that if you still owe for Paul Wildy’s Super Bowl pool to get it to him ASAP or you will lose your spot.

 Meeting adjourned.

Rick Evans called the raffle tickets out.  Pres. Livingstone handed out the prizes.  We gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, a golf club travel bag, hats, golf balls, range cards, and more.

50-50 was $112 tonight.  The winner was Dave Finkes.  $56 for Dave and $56 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing starts every year at $50.  The number of Mike McMahon was pulled.  As you now from earlier in this Newsletter that Mike was at the meeting, but for some unknown reason he left before the Membership Drawing.  We will add $10 to it each month until it is claimed, and then will start at $50 again.  AS Mr. McMahon can tell you, when you come to the meeting it is best to stay to the very end.

Tournament Chairman

If you like to play golf in the fog you would have loved to have played early in this years January Scramble.  We teed off twenty minutes behind because of the visibility (there wasn’t any). Despite these problems everyone in the field was able to complete their round.  Thanks to all of you for keeping up the pace of play, the last group played in 5 hours.  A special thanks to the Board of Directors for a job well done.

To the Tournament, I thought our group played pretty well.  We were 13 under par gross after an eagle on the 18th hole.  All of us were pumped up thinking our additional 3 strokes for net would put us in the $$$$$$.  We didn’t get a sniff.  The winning gross score was 56.  On the surface that doesn’t seem too low, now take off the 8 strokes they would have received as a team to put  them at a smooth 48 net.  Where is the Handicap chairman when you need him????

Great round turned in by Rich Dennison (Board of Director), Jim Crosby, Dave Hasselman, John Hasselman and Darryl Lee.  I mentioned earlier that every group was able to finish, but why is it that the last group(coming in darkness) always seems to cash??  Ray McElhenney (Golf Commissioner), Rob Marchegiano, Ed Polizzo, Dan Schmitz & Rodney Sung with a net 48.  Too good for me.

Our Select Drive tournament for February is full and I have a few people on the stand by list.  We will be taking sign ups for our March tournament at the February 11th General Meeting.  The March tournament will be a reverse waltz, counting 3 best balls on the 1st hole, 2 best balls on the 2nd hole and best ball on the 3rd hole.  We then repeat the process for the next three holes.  Come to the General meeting and sign up for the tournament drawing, everyone has an equal chance to be chosen.  See you there

Tournament Chairman
