President's Corner

Well the Long Beach Golf Festival reaches fever pitch in July, which means our course will be closed a few weekend days this month...check out the posted schedule at the course while making your golfing plans. In July we have our Member-Guest, and hopefully you will be proud to bring a guest to our fine course…and then get them to join the Club! If you have any ideas for this event, please let a member of the Board know. July is also the last chance to sign up for The El Dorado Cup (formerly the flights). This is a great event—played entirely at match play—and you need to see Rich Dennison to play.

There are some El Dorado ties to the 2003 Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame inductees. Shirley Johnston is a long-time member of the El Do Women’s Club, Monty Blodgett was our head pro in the mid to late 70s and Bud Lorbeer was the pro shop and restaurant concessionaire from when Monty left until American Golf took over. I encourage you to come to the induction ceremonies on the Sunday of the Long Beach Open. Speaking of the Open we will have our drawing for three spots in the LBO Pro Am at the General Meeting…I think our team has won two or three times in the past several years, and anyone who has ever played will tell you how much fun it is. Buy those tickets!

Finally, it has been a longstanding policy of the Club to provide a stipend to each member of Board to thank them for their yearly service. Historically, the Board has used this stipend to offset the cost of a golfing weekend inviting friends or potential new Board members to come along. This year we went to Barona Ranch Resort near San Diego, and had a great time. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the membership for approving this. Come on out to the meeting and win one of those Pro Am spots!

Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held June 10, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Your $6 got you a serving of flavorful spaghetti with meatballs and sauce on the side, with veggies and bread. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

Pres. Livingstone recognized Jim McCullough on donating a keg of beer for the meeting attendees, as well as picking up a hefty bar tab following his hole-in-one at the member-Member tournament.  Jim aced the third hole playing at 165 yards.  The hole-in-one insurance was a nice prize.  Bob then apologized to Jim Fuchs as he had noted in the newsletter that Dick Scoville covered the minutes of the May meeting.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Two new members introduced themselves and went on the informative tour with Greg O’Brien.

Rick Evans called for the red and blue raffle tickets that were sold to come forward for the cash reward.  Al Reinking had the blue one, while Vern Herzberg had the red.  A raffle ticket was drawn for an El Dorado hat and a range card.

Jim Baber took the stand to present the trophy that was made, that recognized all of this year’s Saturday Team Play members to the Board of Directors and the Club, and thanked everyone for the support they were given this year.  Pres. Livy noted that it will be out up in the bar / restaurant area.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: He attended the first meeting of the year that had any activity.  They had people from the group that was doing the Long Beach golf survey at the meeting.  He noted that the survey reflects that golf in Long Beach is a bargain, but does not mean to say that a price increase is imminent.  The City wants Long Beach golf to be good and to continue being so.  They felt that the club commissioners only represented their clubs and not the general public, but hey that’s who elected them to the Commission.  The Skylinks project will start in October of this year.  They have pretty much accepted a $5,M bid.  Four people have been chosen to be inducted into this year’s Long Beach Hall of Fame.  The amount of play is fine.  The CIP fund has been frozen in light of what was to be done at Skylinks.  Little Rec wants to have three away tournaments, one each at El Dorado, Skylinks, and Big Rec.  Recommendations to the City have been made.  Pres. Livy advised that they have been notified of trees that need to be trimmed.

Rick Evans – Special Events: Some great shots were made at this year’s Member-Member.  Jim McCullough had a hole-in-one and our Webmaster; Mark Miller got Closest-to-the-Pin for a nice reward as well.  This was nice to see as Mark has been taking care of our website at no cost to the Club.  We also had a Beat-the-Pro event.  Be sure to note if your score beats the Pro so you get included in the payoffs.  Mike Vaughn asked what you are to do if you play before the Pro,

and don’t know if your score was a winner.  Rick advised for anyone that this happens to, to call him and he will make it good to them.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike placed a golf scenario out of the tables for people to figure the score on a hole.  Steve Shure was the only person to come up with the answer of 9, but he could not provide the logic behind the answer so Mike refused to give Steve any prize on his guess.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick wants someone to win the hole-in-one insurance every month as it seems everyone was having a good time.  Fallbrook was played last weekend.  The Hasselman group won the gross on the 18th hole.  Full results have been posted.  August 2 is our away trip to Trilogy.  Everyone needs to be paid in full before we go.  If you sign up you must get your foursome paid for in the entirety.  If a member misses the round and had not paid they will not be allowed to sign up for any other trips until this outstanding debt is relinquished.  Our September weekender will be held at Singing Hills.  Get your groups together for that as it will be a lot of fun.

Another raffle ticket was drawn, this time for some head covers.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: Had $77 in the count-them-all event tonight that 7 people tied on getting $11 each.  The El Dorado Cup is fast coming up.  It is a match play event that is flighted.  You need to sign up and get your $10 entry fee in ASAP.  You will see the breakdown and make arrangements with them to play your match.  The play starts in August.  You will play a new opponent each month so long as you stay alive.

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: The 9-hole tourney went well.  Winners were as follows.  1st place and $70 went to Scott Paul with a 36-3 – 33.  2nd and $40 went to Tony Jimenez with his 33 ½, and $30 for 3rd was Terry Fulford with a 34.  G.O.M. for May winners were Net Bob Austin (75-14 = 61) and Gross Ted Burrows with a real nice 68.  Charlie Baker picked up his plaque for the April net prize.

Newsletter Editor – Don Russell: Don had nothing to add.

Tom Link – Tournaments: The Member-Member tournament was well attended.  After the event was over Tom looked up Hors d’oeuvres in the dictionary and found that it does not mean “all you can eat”.  We ran out of food and those who finished late got nothing.  The Father’s Day tourney has openings at $26 per player as there is no prize fund, just golf to have fun.  The July tournament is the Member-Guest.  Entry forms are in the newsletter and the cost is $75.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Thanked everyone for posting the Member-Member.  Only 7 players forgot, that is a big improvement.  Jerry noted that when you look at the tournament index list the number that is listed is the handicap you get from the blue tees at El Dorado, it is not an index.  If it says 9, you are a 9 from the blues.

Greg O’Brien – Hole-In-One Insurance: Need to re-ante your $3 insurance fee.  If during a tournament there is more than one ace by insured players the pool will be evenly divided between those players.  This is highly unlikely, but if it happens those players will all be compensated.  Perhaps if we have two, we can have a keg of Coors Light and a keg of Budweiser.

Old business – None

New Business – Pres. Livy noted that Jorge Badel is playing in the Long Beach Open, and that in the past the Club has paid the entry fee for our course pro which is $600.  Steve Shure noted that he would like to see us do this, but only on a voluntary basis, such as collecting money at the next tournament from the members and then making up any balance from the general fund.  Steve expressed this concern as he has heard how we are close to being just at our numbers for this year’s budget.  Pres. Livy noted that we will have a donation fund set up at the first tee for the June 28 home tournament.  Jorge is a very active Pro at our club who is always available for rules, Team Play, and other matters.

Meeting adjourned.

Rick Evans conducted the raffle.  Pres. Livy pulled the tickets.  We gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, head covers, hats, golf balls, range cards, and more.  Top prize was a ticket for a threesome at Lakewood C.C. that was won by Vern Herzberg.

Membership drawing was for $100.  The number of Mike Drew was pulled.  Barney was not at the meeting.  Next month it will be for $110.

Tournament Chairman

Thanks to all of you that played in the this years June Tournament.  The pace of  play was much better.  The early groups were able to play in less than 4 ½ hours. Our group did not tee off until 11:26 and we finished at 4:30.  Thanks again for your efforts. First place gross was won by Paul, Andy & Chris Demotropolis, Paul Landreaux and Bob Rogers with a fine score of 141.  The results for all of the Flights are listed in this Newsletter.

We are still taking entry’s for the July Member Guest.  If you would like to enter please fill out an entry Blank and include your partners SCGA#.  This is a one day event and the cost is $75.00 per team.

I have enclosed an entry form for our August Partner-Partner Tournament.  This is a two day event and the cost is $150.00 per Team.  The Format this year will be: First Day Front nine-Cross over.

On the par three holes each player will hit a tee shot, the best shot will be selected and you will play alternate shot from that point until the ball is holed.  On the par Four holes each player will hit a tee shot, you will then cross over and hit your partners drive and he will hit your drive.  At that point you will select the best shot and play one ball (alternate shot) until the ball is holed.

On par fives each player will hit a drive, cross over and hit your partners ball and on the third shot cross back over and hit your third shot, from that point one ball will be selected and you will alternate until the ball is holed.  On the back nine we will play alternate shot.  One person will tee off on the even holes and one person will tee off on the odd holes.

Sundays Format will be Partner Best ball on the front side and Aggregate on the back.  Sign up early, it  should be a lot of fun.
