  9 Hole Tournament

President's Corner

I was able to get back from Seattle in time for the second round of the Member-Member, and it appears to have been a smashing success.  Tom Link will surely go into greater detail, but this event was successful because of many efforts from not just our Club and its members, but from the various golf course staffs as well.  Thanks and congratulations to all involved, or who participated (or who had a Hole in One!).

The busy months continue, as the away trip to Fallbrook will have been completed by meeting night, and we still have the 9-hole and putting tournaments, the Father’s Day Tournament (and that is the loosest use of that word you will ever see) and our monthly tournament, so make sure you come to the General Meeting for more info on all of these events.

The Long Beach Golf Festival is underway, with El Dorado hosting the Long Beach Match Play this month.  Many of our members participate in one or more of the Festival events, and I wish good luck to all who do.  If you would like to play in, or volunteer for, any of the LBGF events, call Bob Chaffee at (562) 494-2850.  On the topic of the Golf Festival and the Long Beach Open, you are reminded that our Club is the only group to have been a Hole Sponsor every year of the tournament.  We raise the money for this sponsorship by selling raffle tickets for 3 spots in the Pro-Am.  All members of the Board have these tickets, so buy some…you never know, you may win!  If we can sell our allotment by meeting night, we will have the drawing this month, if not, we will have the drawing at the July meeting.

We are only three months away from beginning our election process for 2004.  If you are interested in running for an office, or being considered for an appointed position, please contact me or any other member of the Board for more information.  Our Club is only as good as the people who take an active roll in it, so I encourage you to seriously consider doing this.

In closing, I offer personal thanks to Greg O’Brien for chairing the May Meeting and to Dick Scoville for taking the minutes while Mike Vaughn and I were out of town (no, we weren’t together)!  See you at the meeting,

Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held May 13, 2003 at El Dorado Park Golf Course.  President Pro-Tem Greg O’Brien called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Past Presidents in attendance:  Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Don Marmion and Greg O’Brien.

Life member in attendance:  Tom Burris.

President O’Brien noted that Lector Orrick was celebrating his quad-club hole in one.

New members were introduced and assigned handicaps.

PGA pro Jorge Badel spoke about the Buick Scramble.  It will be held June 12th, with tee times running from 10am to Noon.  The cost is $72 per player, which includes green fee, tournament fee and a dozen golf balls.  He handed out a rules sheet.  The winning team(s) will play July 28th in a southern California district final.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commission: had no report.  See his article in the May newsletter.

Jerry Leininger - Handicap: Spoke about posting scores for the member-member.  On Saturday, post your own score as a regular round.  Not a tournament round.  On Sunday, post your own score as a tournament round.

Rick Evans - Special Events: noted that the meeting night raffles have been well supported.  He asked that members pay attention to the handicap divisions when signing up for special events.  Some have been putting their names in the wrong handicap division.  He also asked that members turn in skins and amen-corner type special events to the directors at the scoring table when their round is finished.

Nick Zamora - Entertainment: thanked Paul Wildy for bringing sandwiches on the Soboba bus trip.  He announced the Soboba results.  He noted that if a course is open, you must play no matter what the weather.  If you don’t show up, you lose your entry fee.

Mike Marmer - Rules: reiterated his newsletter article which  discussed later hazard dropping options.

Cairo Piercy - Director: announced the April GOM winners.  Gross – John Dymon, 72.  Net – Charlie Baker, 65.  He also announced the nine-hole winners.  Terry Fulford was 1st.

Rich Dennison - Director: announced the putting contest winners.  Mike McMahon was 1st.  Rich will discuss the El Dorado Cup at the June meeting.

Tom Link - Tournament: announced the pairings party on Friday will have a partner’s alternate-shot chip and putt contest.  Activities will start at 5pm.  Jerry Leininger will supply hors d’oeuvres on Saturday from 1 to 5 pm.  There are still times available for Father’s Day.

Old business: None.

New business: None.

Meeting adjourned.

50-50 was $52.

Membership drawing was $90.  Jay O’Brien was not present.  The drawing in June will be for $100.

Jim Fuchs, Secretary Pro-Tem

Tournament Chairman

The weather was great and I hope everyone enjoyed this years Member/Member Tournament.  Special thanks to Jerry Leininger for his food contribution this year.  For those of you that do not know he supplied all of the hors d’oeuvres for Saturday & Sunday.  Another special thank you to Steve Shure for organizing the horse race on Friday.  It is a lot of work and greatly appreciated.

For those of you that did not attend the Friday evenings festivities we had a combination chipping and putting contest that everyone seemed to really enjoy.  We may have to make this a regular part of the tournament.

This years winners in our Gross Division were Jim Fuchs and Ted Burroughs with a fine combined score of 209. “A” Flight winners (repeating from last year) were Rod and Bob Austin with an unbelievable score of 193.  This bears some watching! “B” Flight winners were Steve Moore and Steve Raywald with a combined score of 201.   “C” Flight was taken by Greg Charrier and Eric Sasaki with a fine 197.  By the way, Par is 216!

I am still taking entry’s for our June Tournament.  This year we are playing a 5 Man Reverse Waltz, Three best Ball.  If you are interested in playing please send me an E-Mail, put an application in the Men’s Club Box or call me at home.

Our next Tournament is our Member-Guest and we will not have a sign up at the meeting.  Please fill out the enclosed application and get it in early.

Speed of play remains an issue.  We need to play in 5 hours or less.  If you sign up for an early time you need to be able to complete your round in 4 ½ or less to enable the later groups to have a good pace of play.  It is not important where the group is that is behind yours.  It is important that you play each hole in approximately 15 minutes. We will be monitoring this and will be handing out penalty strokes to teams that are not keeping pace.

Some of you may have seen Hank Kuenhe take what appeared to be an unusual drop on the 18th hole of the Houston Open. Hank drove his ball into a lateral water hazard on the left side of the fairway. Instead of taking two club lengths relief from the last place the ball crossed the hazard, he crossed the hazard to the opposite side to take relief. He did this as had he dropped on the side where the ball entered he would have had to drop the ball on the bank which would have resulted in lie that would have required a baseball type swing.

Rule 26-I (c) provides that as an additional option, only if the ball crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, the ball may be dropped on a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

Some of you may keep this in mind when playing the 13th hole if your drop would require you to be blocked out by the trees near the front of the water hazard. You may go over the 11th hole and take relief at that point, as long as you are equidistant from the hole.

Q. A player hit a ball into a lateral water hazard. He wished to take relief on the opposite margin of the hazard, equidistant from the hole. However, the opposite margin was marked with a yellow line as a water hazard. The player dropped on the opposite margin and hit his shot. Did he incur a penalty?

A. No. Relief is determined according to the status of the hazard at the point where the ball last crossed the hazard margin.

Commissioner's Report

Well this months meeting had a little more 'flare' to it. Tom Tucker from Pultz Marketing presented an hour long overview of the findings their company discovered from their research. I will not be able to give you all of their findings but I will touch on several topics. These findings were gathered from interviews and comparing our golf operations to 10 comparable courses in the area. First and foremost Long Beach Golf was and is a great bargain! The costs were found to be higher at almost all the other comparable courses. Our reservation system is very antiquated!! 65% of the play at our courses is by non-residents. Our pace of play, that is to say all of the courses, received a very low score! You think!!! Just look at how long it takes to play our tournaments. The outside tournament play is not following the policy and procedures manual?? The commissioners represent their clubs, and not the general public. Lastly our Jr. Golf program is outstanding. Keep in mind these findings are being presented to the city. They will look at them and then make some suggestions on what direction to take. The Commissioners will be asked to take on those special projects I have spoken about. Bottom line is the City wants to create a new Vision and Statement for the future of Long Beach Golf.  The rounds of golf for the month of April remain down 6.14% for all courses, and El Dorado was down 9.27%. Year to date we are down 6.83% while all the courses are down 5.58%. As I have stated several times the C.I.P. funds are basically the first payment towards the bond for the Skylinks project.

As I write this article the project is still a go for the first part of October 2003??? The bids are in and one has been accepted. They did not give us any real details at the meeting but it appears everything is moving forward in a very positive fashion.

There were four nominees for our Long Beach Hall of Fame. The names I cannot reveal, but these folks will be inducted on July 27th at the conclusion of the Long Beach Open.

Our club hours are in line. The revenue generated by the courses remains fine. For the year the courses have combined for a total of over 1 million in revenue, in which 325 thousand goes directly to the city. One last topic that was brought up for consideration. The president of Little Rec has requested for reinstatement for 4 away tournaments for his Men's Club. Apparently way back when Little Rec played a tournament at Big Rec, El Dorado and Skylinks. For some reason they lost those events? Now Bill Barefield has requested this be reinstated. His request was turned over to the Policy and Procedures sub committee. Well enough for now. I will see you at the next general meeting.

Golf Commissioner
