President's Corner

Well, since I thought Arnold would be elected governor, the biggest shock in California in October was my team cashing in The Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament.  Some how, we played better with that stupid thing than without it!  This is always one of the most fun and story-laden events of the year, and 2003 was no exception.

Everyone who attended the October General Meeting got to hear from Paul Goydos as he answered questions ranging from the quality of Tiger’s golf equipment, to whether or not Paul tests his golf balls by dropping them in cups of salty tap water (you had to be there, for that one!).  I think everyone enjoyed Paul’s frankness and humor, and we certainly appreciate him showing up and congratulate him on his great year.  If everything goes according to plan, Paul will do a Beat the Pro in our Christmas Tournament.

As I mentioned in last month’s article, the over-seeding of the course will have taken place by the time you get this.  I encourage patience and understanding from everyone during a month or so of damp and cart path only conditions.  The condition of the course during the cold and normally dormant months should be worth the short-term inconvenience.  Kudos and thanks to Jack and the maintenance crew for the condition of the course the past year…it has been awesome!

Remember than November is election time.  We have two contested offices and candidates worthy of your consideration to fill them.  The balloting will begin at the start of the meeting, so don’t be late.  See you there.

  Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held October 14, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a fine selection of ham, au gratin potatoes, veggies, and a roll for the finest $6 meal found anywhere.  President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:01p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, and Greg O’Brien.

Mr. Fred Gibson joined Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone in representation of our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Two new members went with Greg O’Brien for the introductory tour.

Pres. Livingstone commented that Barbara Conlisk just had surgery and the club sent her flowers.  She returned home and sent a letter of thanks for the flowers and the cards for our membership.

Team Play: Jim Baber, Saturday captain made note that anyone interested in playing Team Play must have get their 2004 dues renewal to Mike Vaughn immediately.  Jim also stated that if you sign up you must commit to the whole season.  Currently there are 41 players sign up to fill 48 spots.  Our practice rounds will be October 26, November 2, and November 8th starting at 9:30.   Jim and John Davis will have pairings on the bulletin board and on the website.  As FYI it was noted that Jim just completed in a L.B. marathon for charity cause.

Tom McCutcheon, Thursday captain noted that the Thursday team always needs players.  Their first practice is this Thursday at 10:00.  See him or Roger Scaife if you can participate. Tom noted that if you commit to play total monies due would be paid up front.  Any player will be reimbursed for times they miss.

A quick drawing from the raffle ticket barrel provided a little cash for 2 lucky winners.

Our quest speaker for a question and answer session tonight is Paul Goydos.  Paul was warned of a few members who may continue to shoot questions at him.  Paul thanked everyone for the Club’s support and how Long Beach is a great town, supportive of local athletes.  First off out of the gate Tom McCutcheon asked if Tiger was playing with inferior equipment.  Paul advised Tom that he is playing with that same equipment.  Asked if this was one of his better years Paul noted that he had a good summer.  When asked about his feelings towards all of the drivers that out there he doesn’t think there are many that don’t conform.  Paul noted that this is more on the back of the USGA, not the players.  Paul interjected that the feels the most technical advantage the golfers today have is the lawn mower.  The greens are like putting on a pool table.  Mike Marmer inquired about how the pros are paying caddy fees and salaries with the size of today’s purses.  When asked about pressure during a tournament Goydos stated that he doesn’t worry about where he is or what he needs to do at any time.  Paul notes that he always plays to the best he can, where he ends up just works itself out.  Just keeping your card is a perk.  He sees that too many get caught up in all of the hoopla along the way.  Tom Bentele asked about when a ball becomes out of balance as per a recent Golf Digest article.  Paul was asked if he feels that he plays better now than he used to and his answer was most definitely.  Paul noted that you always have to get better or you will get lapped.  It is not a big issue to Paul about who they put him with in a tournament.  He pays no entry fees in PGA tournaments.  Any preferential treatment comes from sponsors.  Steve Liebeck asked Paul about his practice schedule.  It all depends on how he is playing, but he will not practice himself into a slump.  If he’s playing well he practices less.  If he’s struggling he practices more.  Paul noted that the majority of people don’t really know their own irons, let alone the course they are playing. Paul answered Gerry Hodge’s inquiry on his thoughts about making the courses longer vs. tightening them up.  Paul feels this is all a concern that due to the equipment we have to play with.  In a sense we are beating ourselves by asking for and getting the equipment that is available today.  Dennis Tramer was curious as to how Paul sets his schedule.  West Coast courses are his first option.  He looks at the schedule and determines where he will play based on how he feels about any given place.  He commented that is you play Torrey Pines at 1,000 yards less than they do you are not playing the same course as the pros.  When asked about hitting the Pro V1 on the seam for greater distance, Paul admitted that it is part of his routine, and that Titleist has supposedly corrected this condition.  The last question from the field was from Stan Faris who inquired about physical fitness training.  Paul feels it is most important to be flexible.  He sated his favorite course last year was at the AT&T, 70 degrees and sunny, however most all of the courses were tour quality.  Paul received a big applause from the membership and was thanked for the taking the time to come to the meeting.

A hat and sleeve of golf balls were given to another lucky raffle ticket holder.

Greg O’Brien pulled the raffle tickets from the barrel.  Rick Evans called the numbers while Don Russell and Dan Ahern handed out the prizes. Good prizes were had to be won in the likes of shirts, clubs, balls, and other goodies.

50-50 drawing pulled in $94 tonight.  $47 went to Terry Fulford and $47 went to Jr. Golf.

Meeting adjourned.

The “Orange Balls can be put in the closet for one more year.  The Ghosts of Orange Ball past jumped up and bit us again this year.  Our group was going along in good shape until we reached the 8th hole.  We had our “ace” Frank Followell in control of our Destiny.  Frank hit a good Drive, put his second shot in Front of the Green in two and we walked away with a smooth “7”.  That wasn’t enough though, on the next hole we followed up with a dandy “6”.  Hope the fait of your group was much better than ours, we finished out of the money.

We have taken sign ups for the November Stableford, but I do have a few openings at this time, send me an e-mail, call or see me at the meeting and I will try to get you in.

I have enclosed an entry for this years “Christmas” Tournament, it is on Sunday the 14th of December.  We will have the course all day and will limit the amount of entry’s to 180 players.  It is a 7:30 shotgun.  We will play 5somes and it will be a “true” blind draw.  The field will be divided into 5 flights and a player from each flight will be drawn for each team.  If you have not played, check with one of the Directors, they will tell you about the Derby’s that are held after the Tournament.
