President's Corner

Welcome to October, the month that signifies the return of the Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament!  I’m sure VP Link will have all kinds of info on this most horrifying event both in his news article and at the meeting.   The Orange Ball is currently the longest running tradition in the Club, but that distinction used to belong to The Singing Hills Weekender.  For the first time in many years, we returned to Oak Glen and Willow Glen as a group, and while I couldn’t attend because of traveling with my golf team, I hear that everyone had a great time (with the possible exception of the 3 teams which didn’t cash, that is).  Kudos to Nick Zamora for putting together this trip, and for having the “guts” to risk a new format…I’m sure we’ll hear some about that at the meeting, too!

Well, Skylinks GC has finally closed, and will not reopen for a year.  The City and American Golf have done everything they can to accommodate our Club events, but be aware that our course is going to be very crowded for the next twelve months, and there will undoubtedly be some inconveniences that we will all have to suffer through.  Also, A reminder that the course will be over-seeded sometime between the end of October and beginning of November, and that will mean some soggy conditions and carts on the paths only for several weeks.

October is the month where our Nominating Committee takes nominations from the floor, to add to those names announced last month on the slate of candidates.  If you are interested in running for an office, please get someone to put your name in nomination at the General Meeting.  The Board sets the tenor for the Club, and we need active members to help keep our Club strong, so I encourage you to get involved.  See you at the meeting.

Bob Livingstone
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held September 9, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a fine selection of chicken, pasta, and rice for the best $6 meal in town.  President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, and Greg O’Brien.

Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Pres. Livingstone had a couple of announcements.  First, Scotty Brown and Ed Fernandez who won our Member-Member have advanced to the SCGA amateur net at Cypress Ridge.  Secondly, we will be correcting that was posted last Sunday at the Club Championship.  These rounds are to be played from the black tees and posted as “T” scores.  Lastly, Pres. Livingstone noted that he is presenting the option of installing Mr. Fred Gibson, and inaugural member of our club, into our Life Member status.  Motion was made from the floor to accept Fred at this level, seconded, and unanimously approved.  Congratulations Fred.

Two new members introduced themselves tonight by telling their name, occupation, and handicap.  They then went on the tour with Greg O’Brien.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Ray commented on how the year has passed so quickly.  The biggest item is Skylinks.  The first payment has been made.  They will continue play until October 1.  You’ll have brown fairways as they have already sprayed twice.  For a period of seven or 8 months the City will rotate between here and Rec. Park.  Noted that rounds are down by about 4%.  Jay Carballo responded to Pres. Livingstone’s letter about needing the trees trimmed and will be happening.  A comment from the membership noted that they have already started.  The tunnel will likely be painted to cover the graffiti that was recently placed on the walls.  Holes along the #11 fairway fence are to be repaired.  If there are things you know that need attention on the course bring them up to Ray.  It was noted the restrooms are not being kept in very good condition.  Ray suggests we complete the comment cards to let them know.  The money from last Saturday’s tournament will be available at the October meeting.

Pres. Livy opened the floor to Roger Scaife for Thursday Team Play (TP).  Roger stated that sign ups are posted on the board behind the computer.  Roger wants all of his players to play 2 to 3 strokes better than their index.  The events are match play.  Our opponents will be Lakewood Seniors, Little Wood (Laguna Hills), and Costa Mesa.  Jim Baber, Saturday’s TP captain was not at the meeting so Pres. Livy mentioned that there are 13 places left on the Saturday team so sign up on the board behind the computer.  Saturday opponents will be El Toro, Costa Mesa, and Mile Square.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: It is important to remember to post your adjusted scores, and most importantly to remember to post or you will receive a penalty round.  A penalty round is duplication of your lowest differential in your last 20 rounds.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Singing Hills is our weekender this year.  We’ll be playing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 26, 27, and 28.  Friday tee times start at 12:00 Noon.  Saturday is the start of the weekender tournament.  Nick plans to use a format different from what we have grown used to in the past.  Be prepared for a format of better ball-aggregate for the odd and even holes.  Determination for which will be odd and which will be even likely will not be until after play is completed.   This will most likely be the format for both Saturday and Sunday.  Tee times on Sunday start at 8:00 am.  Rancho California is a drive trip scheduled for Saturday November 1.  The format there will be 3-better ball.  Entry is $75 per player.  Beers to be made available at Greg O’Brien’s backyard on the 9th tee box.

Rick Evans reminded everyone that we have our biggest raffle at the December meeting.  If you or anyone you know have any goods or services to donate please let him know.  Rick drew two raffle tickets, and prizes went to Ruben Gonzales and Lowell Overturf (sitting at the same table).

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: The 9-hole went well. 3rd place Al Ostberg, 2nd Dick Deutschman, and 1st to Eric Burke.  Net GOM went to Tom Baker with a 65, while Larry Grant took Gross with a 69!

Rich Dennison – El Dorado Cup and Putting Contest: The ‘Cup is going along well.  Everyone seems to be getting their rounds played.  (4) tied with 4 in the Putting Contest.  Splitting the prize fund equally were Terry Henson, Atul Anand, Mel Collins, and Mike Marmer.  Jim Fuchs asked questions about The El Dorado Cup which were promptly answered.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Concerning the El Dorado Cup, some have asked him how to apply handicap when a match ends all square and they need to continue on if they have already given the handicap on the initial round.  The appendix defines that the strokes are to fall on the card where they normally would.  A question was asked if you can play an unplayable lie in a water hazard.  The answer is no, in either a lateral or water hazard.  About what constitutes a stroke is if you have addressed the ball and swung with the intention of hitting the ball that is a stroke.

Tom Link – Tournaments: We are in the middle of the Flights and Championship rounds.  After two days Mel Collins and Jim Fuchs are tied for the lead at 147.  October is the Orange Ball.  Sign ups are being taken.  Each group will be given (2) orange balls that must be used.

Pres. Livingstone mentioned to the membership that 2004 Membership Renewals will be includes with this month’s Newsletter.  Renewals for those who get their Newsletter via email will be sent this week.

New Business – Greg O’Brien, Immediate Past-President: Elections are coming up for the 2004 Officers and Board of Directors.  Tonight Greg will announce the slate of people who have expressed interest.  Next month nominations will be accepted from the floor.  The slate as of today is President – Tom Link, Vice President – Rich Dennison and Tom McCutcheon, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, and Directors at Large – Dennis Tramer and Mike Marmer.  If you are interested in a position talk to any ‘Board member, even if it would be for an appointed position.

Old Business – The 100, 150,and 200 yard bushes, Jack is opposed to placing hard markers on the course.  He plans to move these natural markers more to the side of the fairways instead of leaving them next to them as they are now.

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets were sold for 10 minutes.  Tonight’s prizes include a lot of good prizes including a putter, Titleist balls, gloves, a 53 degree wedge, etc…

I missed who won the 50-50 drawing once again. Let me know so I can provide your spotlight in next month’s newsletter.

Membership drawing tonight was for $130.  Number of James Turner was drawn.  James was not at the meeting tonight. Be sure to come to the meetings and stay until the end as your number may be drawn.  Next month the prize will be $140.

Tournament Chairman

We ended up with a spirited competition for our Club Championship.  Jim Fuchs held off Mel Collins on the last hole to win the open division with a four day total of 294, 6 over par.  Nice going Jim.  The winner this year in the Senior Division (50 & 0ver) was also Jim Fuchs with Larry Grant coming in Second Place.  The Flight winners were Todd Thiele (5.9 – 9.4), Wayne Setinek (9.5 – 13.0) and David Pemberton in an 18-hole playoff over Paul Standish (13.1 & up).  Congratulations to all who participated.  The results of the September Tournament and the “Club Championships” are listed in the newsletter.

We will be taking sign ups for the November “Stableford” Tournament at the October meeting.  Be sure to attend so that your group can secure a spot.  This is an individual Tournament, divided into 3 Flights by Handicap.  It is also the time for you to nominate your “candidate” for the Board of Directors.  I hope to see all of you at the next meeting.

Commissioner's Report

Well it is time for another update from your commissioner. Not a great deal to report but I will give you some "tidbits". Our next commissioners meeting will be held at our course. If you would like to attend it will be on October 22nd.  The time is 3:30 P.M.. I have joined 3 different sub Committees this year. I will be on the Tournament Committee, also the Jr. Golf Committee and lastly the Capital Improvement Committee. It appears that Skylinks is going forward. The first bond payment has been made, plus the course has been sprayed. Only one small setback and that is in regards to the Palm Trees. The company that was going to oversee that part has pulled out. Now the City will move some to the beach areas, 50 will be sold and the balance will be addressed on site. The rounds of golf are still down for the month and for the year. For last month our course was down 9.16%. For the year our rounds are down 4.69%. For all the courses year to date we are down 4.87%. Course revenue is still very well off. For last month the gross income for all the courses was over 1 million dollars, and over 376 Grand going to the city. The C.I.P. funds are very much alive and well. In fact with the bond issue for Skylinks under way the 10% that goes into the fund is now being handled by the bank for the bond. Yes we do receive interest on that money. And yes if there are projects that need to be done at the Long Beach courses, we still have access to that fund. I have some course inspections forms that I will leave at the computer area in the Pro Shop. If you see a condition on our course, fill out the form call me and I will pick up the form and forward it to the City. Well I think that will wrap things up for this month.    See you at our Meeting.

Ray McElhenney
Golf Commissioner
