September 2003 Volume 21, Issue 9 MEETING NIGHT - SEPTEMBER 9th - 7:00pm 9 Hole Tourney & Putting Tournament Meeting Night Club Championship - September 6,7 & 13,14 Singing Hills Weekender - September 27 & 28 President's Corner Meeting
Minutes Tournament Chairman Rules
Chairman Handicap Chairman Commissioner's Report Treasurer's
Report Partner Tournament Results & Special Events Well, summer
is winding down, but our activities are heating up! The
El Dorado Cup is in full swing, with four full flights of 16 players.
Hopefully all of the first round matches have been completed by the time you read
this. The Flight Championships will have
begun before our meeting night, so hopefully you signed up if you were interested in
playing…Tom Link will have more about this at the meeting.
Team Play “qualifying” begins shortly, and sign-up information is posted at the
course…this is arguably the most popular activity in the Club, so don’t miss out. The golf
course was in great shape for our Partner-Partner Tournament, as Jack walk-mowed and
rolled the greens for us. The course has
really been in great shape all summer long, and if you see Jack or one of the members of
the maintenance crew, you may want to give him an “atta boy!” Remember
that we are nearing election time. Nominating
Committee Chairman Greg O’Brien is seeking interested members to be announced as part of
the Slate of Candidates at this month’s meeting. If
you have any questions about serving on the Board in either an elected or appointed
capacity, please contact any of the members of the Board. In closing,
I encourage you to come to the meeting. Not only does Rick Evans tear up hundreds of tickets for the wonderful
raffle prizes, but there is great camaraderie and the chance to win the membership drawing
of something like $130. Hope to see you
there. Bob Livingstone The monthly meeting was held August 12, 2003 under the El
Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. 3
rounds on Rich Dennison’s putting course kept me outside and I missed “The $6 Meal”,
but I know it was good. President Livingstone
called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag. Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville,
Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien. Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our
life membership. Pres. Livingstone recognized Dave Young as being in attendance.
Dave served on the Board of Directors before he moved to Seattle.
It was good to see you Dave. The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as
printed in the newsletter were accepted. We had one new member tonight who introduced himself. He told
us his name, occupation, and desire to establish a handicap, and went on the tour with
Greg O’Brien. Team Play – Jim Baber noted that last year’s Saturday team
got to the quarterfinals. Jim thanked Pres.
Livingstone and the Board of Directors for their selecting him to be the Team Captain with
John Davis as he his Co-Captain. There
is a sheet posted to sign up for Team Play qualifying rounds.
These will start on October 26 and be held on 3 consecutive weekends.
Your handicap needs to be 18.4 or less. To
be eligible you must have been a member for 12 months, and have participated in at least 3
Club events during this 12-month period. Pres. Livy noted that the Club selected to pay Jorge Badel’s
entry into the L.B. Open. Jorge sent a letter
back to thank us for the appreciated gesture. Jorge
made the cut and finished the tournament shooting 71, 71, 73, and 72.
Way to go Jorge! Rick Evans pulled a raffle ticket out of the barrel for $5.
No one claimed the other marked ticket that was drawn. No one from the Pro Shop was available this evening. Committee Reports: Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Ray had nothing to report
tonight. Handicap: Pres.
Livy presided, as Jerry was not with us tonight. Jim Fuchs wanted to know why the El
Dorado Cup was being played at current index and not the tournament index.
Wayne Setinek inquired why the Club Championship was being played at LI and not
tournament index. Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Trilogy trip is in the
books. It was a nice course, but they still
need to finish their clubhouse. A lot of
people participated and a lot of prizes going to a lot of teams.
The weekender is fast coming up. We
are going to Singing Hills and plan to do lots of stuff while we’re down there. To get in you need to see Nick immediately.
Of course Nick knows that the casino now owns the course, and is just down the
road. Get the money for this one to him ASAP.
In November we’ll be going to SCGA Member’s Course Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: Brian Ball won the 9-hole.
Tom Baker slid a 34 for second while 3rd was a tie between Tom Conlisk
and Terry Fulford. For July GOM, Net went to
Billy Johnson (76-14=62), Gross was taken by John Tamney with a 71. Cairo has been asked about if you are supposed to tee off from the
rocks or the plates. Be sure to play from the
plates. He will put a note about this in the
newsletter. In the past we have always used
the plates. Rick Evans called a couple more raffle prizes.
A sleeve and glove went to both Brian Ball and Terry Sweet. Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: What a fun putting course we
had tonight. 20 was the lowest score all
night. Jay Johnston shot this right off the
start and never got caught. Tied for 2nd
shooting 21 were Todd Thiel. Terry Henson, and Wayne Setinek.
It appears that the El Dorado Cup (the old flight tournament) are going along well.
Be sure to get your match played before the end of the month. Tom Link – Tournaments: The August Partner-Partner is now
scheduled. Tom apologized for being so late
in posting the times. We’ll be playing 4
different formats in this tournament, and it should be lots of fun.
Taking sign ups for the Club Championship and Flight groups.
Last year we had 6 groupings all grouped per handicap and played without handicap.
Hors d’oeuvres will be available. Tom
noted that this is not to be treated as a buffet lunch.
Do buy some food from the course. Old business – 2004 Renewal will be sent with your September
newsletter or the Secretary will send form to those who subscribe to it via email.
Renewal rate of $75 for the renewals received by October 15.
$90 rate will apply thereafter. New Business – Greg O’Brien advised that the Hole-In-One
insurance fund is up to $522. That’s
174 policyholders Mr. Fuchs. Greg then want
on to advise that election for next year is fast coming up.
Elected positions at President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and (2)
Directors at Large. If you would like to be
on the slate let Greg, Pres. Livy, or Tom Link know.
There are also appointed positions. If you would like to see what the job
responsibility is we have Club Standard Operating Procedures that you can see which
defines the position description. The stipend
for serving on the ‘Board is $300, which we use to go on a weekend golf outing that
always cost us in addition to the $300. Greg
noted that if you did the math, $300 divided by 12 months it’s not a lot. Also, the yardage bushes at 100, 150, and 200 yards were
technically put in as an experiment. We did a
local rule for relief until they grow in full. As
the L.B. Open Handicap Chairman, Pres. Livy is going to submit a letter requesting they be
removed. The ‘Board supports this position.
Mel Collins asked if this is due to the bushes being just to the edge of the
fairway, and about the rules for these bushes during the Club Championship.
We want to replace the bushes with something that is visible and removable.
A lot of discussion followed, including why the sprinkler heads are not marked. One other announcement, Don Russell’s wife Karen is a member
of the Seal Beach Lion’s Club. They are
hosting a tournament at Los Al Navy Course on August 20.
See Don for an entry form. Meeting adjourned. Rick Evans ran the raffle with Don Russell pulling the tickets
from the barrel. Tim Yee was a 4-time winner when the Secretary quit counting.
Once again Rick Evans handed out a lot of good prizes, tonight included some Pro
V1’s. 50-50 drawing tonight was for $44.
Excuse me for not noting down who the winner was.
Let me know so I can get you your spotlight in next month’s newsletter. Membership drawing tonight was for $120.
Number of Bob Bernard was drawn. Bob
was not at the meeting tonight. We have a lot
of fun at the meetings. Be sure to stay until
the end as your number may be drawn. Next
month the prize will be $130. Mike
Vaughn We will be in the middle of the Club Championships by the time that you get this article. The sign ups for this event in the higher Handicaps was very disappointing (low index of 17.0 and above, one person only signed up). We are open to suggestions from any of you as to what we can do in the future. Please contact anyone on the Board of Directors. The August Partner-Partner was a huge success, I think we have found a format that we can carry forward. The feedback from everyone that played was extremely positive. The Gross winners were Larry Grant and Tom Flynn. We had three different Flights and the results are printed in this Newsletter and posted on the Website. We will have a Drawing for Tee times at the September meeting for the October Tournament. This is the dreaded “Orange Ball” Tournament. Be sure to attend the meeting, you don’t want to miss this one. Tom Link September Tournament Handicaps Jerry

Al
Ostberg WELL IT HAS BEEN A COUPLE OF MONTHS SINCE I WROTE AN ARTICLE AND THIS ONE MAY BE LATE BECAUSE ARE COMMISSIONERS MEETING WAS JUST HELD TWO DAYS AGO. LET ME START OUT BY LETTING YOU KNOW THAT THE PAST YEAR HAS FLOWN BY. IN FACT WE VOTED FOR THE CHAIR AND CO-CHAIR DURING OUR LAST MEETING. BILL TOWNSEND IS THE CHAIR, AND SKIP ROWLAND IS THE CO-CHAIR FOR THE COMING YEAR. THE SKYLINKS PROJECT IS A GO! THEY WILL BE CLOSING OCTOBER 1ST, AND WILL BE CLOSED FOR ONE YEAR?? THEY WILL START THE SPRAYING OF THE FAIRWAYS NEXT WEEK. THE ROUNDS OF GOLF REMAIN DOWN FOR THE YEAR AT 4.15%. THE REVENUE FOR OUR COURSES IS VERY MUCH ALIVE AND WELL. THE C.I.P. FUNDS ARE AT THIS POINT IN AN ACCOUNT TO PAY THE FIRST PAYMENT ON THE BOND FOR THE SKYLINKS PROJECT. JAY CABALLO ASSURED US THAT THE TREE TRIMMING AT OUR COURSE WILL TAKE PLACE VERY SOON, IN FACT THEY HAVE RECEIVED ONE BID AND ARE AWAITING ANOTHER. AS FAR AS SOME OF THE DRY SPOTS ON OUR COURSE THAT IS ALSO BEING LOOKED AT. JAY COMMENTED THAT SOME OF THE SPRINKLERS WILL HAVE TO BE CHANGED IN ORDER TO REMEDY THAT PROBLEM. IN THE COMING MONTHS WE WILL BE LOOKING AT THE POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR THE GOLF OPERATION FOR THE CITY. THIS WAS TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE ALREADY, BUT THE SKYLINKS PROJECT COMPLETELY CONSUMED EVERYONE INVOLVED. WELL THAT'S IT FOR NOW. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS PLEASE LET ME KNOW. SEE YOU SOON .
