President's Corner

Both Thursday & Saturday Teams Qualify for the playoffs. Thursday was eliminated in their opening match by an always-tough team from Brookside.  Saturday Team has won their first two matches with Canyon Crest & El Niguel by identical scores of 28 – 20.  Saturday’s next opponent is our neighbor Meadowlark. I would like to congratulate both teams for a great season.  It’s time for us to bring home the trophy, keep it up Saturday Team.

We will have the nine hole Tournament for the first time this year along with our putting contest before the meeting on Tuesday the 13th. Come out early and participate, it is always fun.  I am sure a few adult beverages will be served!

Quad Club has been on, then off, then on & finally it is off again.  Our last option was to play at Lakewood on April the 10th.  The problem was that the Greens were going to be punched and the City wanted to add a $12.00 surcharge on top of the regular fees, we decided to pass.  We should be able to host this fun get together next year; the proposed date is April 30th, set your calendar.

Our next Tournament is 1 Gross two net.  Rich Dennison still has a few openings if you are not already registered, see him at the meeting or give him a call if you want in, he will do his best.

Our major Tournament of the year is coming up in May, The Member-Member.  It will fill up quickly; get your application in early.  If you do not have a partner send in a single application with your $$$ and Rich will try to match you up with someone.  To be eligible to win this Tournament you must have played in at least 3 Tournaments over the past year.

Look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting

President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held March 9, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant provided a beef and gravy, potatoes, veggies, and a roll tonight for your $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, and Tom McCutcheon represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Several new members were in attendance.  They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Greg O’Brien took them on the informational tour.

Our course General Manager, Mez White, addressed the membership with update that they are knee-deep in course work.  Sand bottles have been placed behind the 10th green.  They are working to get money identified to fill in the sand bunkers where it is needed.  Mez congratulated both the Thursday and Saturday teams for making the playoffs.  Extra work hours on the weekends is still a priority,

Team Play – Thursday captain Tom McCutcheon noted their first playoff match is Thursday March 18.  Tom thanked everyone who has supported the Thursday team.  We will play Brookside fin the first round, half the team here and half the team there.  The playoffs are single elimination.  Saturday captain Jim Baber noted we came out on top of our division.  Jim made note that Mez and his staff have been very accommodating in support this year.  We start the playoffs Vs Canyon Crest this Saturday.  Jim then ran down the list of this year’s Saturday team.

Committee Reports:

Rick Evans – Special Events: Thanked Jack and his crew for setting up the circles prior to the last tournament.

Golf Commissioner – Tom Link: Our commissioner, Ray McElhenney, was not at the meeting tonight.  Tom made note that the Skylinks project is on schedule.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: We’ve had some posting problems, as there are some double postings.  If you are a member who has this problem please let him know right away so correction can be made.  Al Reinking noted the computer clock was off by 24 hours, which attributed to that problem.  Jerry also mentioned that several new members had been issued two (2) SCGA numbers.  He read these members names and asked for them to see him so that they use the correct index number.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Results from the last two away trips have been posted.  We played two courses in the last three weeks.  General Old was a 2-beter ball with 3 blind draw holes where we counted them all.  These blind draw holes were drawn after the match.  Mel Collins team won gross and almost beat Nick’s team for Net, something Nick says is impossible.  The April away tourney is at Jurupa Hills. Format will be 3-better ball.  May is our bus trip to Soboba Springs.  Format there will be a 1-2-3 Waltz.  On the schedule June shows us to be going to Goose Creek.  We will now be going to Oak Quarry instead.  There will be 60 spots at $85 per on a first come first serve basis.

Mel Collins – Rules: Mel discussed the water hazard on hole #8.

Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing new to bring up.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Next month starts the 9-hole and Putting Contests on meeting day / nights.  The Golfer Of the Year tournament was just held.  Gross winner was John Tamney with a 74.  Net winner was Mike Montgomery with a 71.  G.O.M. for March only had one gross card.  It went to Mike Marmer for an even par 72.  Net had two cards.  Robert Creighton shot a 77 – 10 for a 67, but that wasn’t good enough to beat Frank Kolb who shot a 77 – 14 for a 63.  The 63 is 1 stoke under his age.  The membership gave Frank a great round of applause.

Rich Dennison – Tournaments: The tournament this weekend will be a 1-2-3 Waltz.  When you get to a par-3 hole, be sure to wave the group behind you up when they reach the tee.  Dave Dvorchak may be at the tournament this Sunday acting in the capacity of a marshal.  April 18 tournament will be a 1-Gross, 2-Net format.  The Member-Member is scheduled for May 15 & 16.  Pairings party will be help Friday night with the Bar-B-Que set for Saturday.  Rich called the first 10 names for sign up immediately following the close of the meeting.

Old Business: Mike Vaughn brought up that at last month’s meeting Bob Livingstone asked any members who could donate some time to the Long Beach Golf Festival to try to do so.  New member, Leslie Dergan, volunteered and worked three full days.  Les was instrumental in putting together golf active setups for the kids. It was a big hit.  Les was recognized in the audience and the membership gave him a round of applause for his efforts.

New Business – Al Reinking asked who was responsible for placing Team Play scores into the computer.  The answer is the home team.

Meeting adjourned.

More raffle tickets were sold.  Don Russell drew the tickets and Rick Evans called them out.  Dennis Tramer distributed the prizes.  As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.

50-50 was $94 tonight.  The winner was Lowell Overturf.  That was a quick $47 for Lowell and $47 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $60.  The number of Darrell Lee was drawn.  Darrell was not at the meeting.  The prize will increase to $70 next month.

The weather link on the clubs web site was right on again predicting a perfect day for golf. The only thing that could have been better is for my team too have cashed.

The Gross –Flight was won by Mel Collins, Doug Jones, Kevin Orr, Greg Lester and John Tamney with a nice 129. I think the addition of Mr. Tamney was an inspiration, because he is not a Mr. Short Pour.  The A- Flight was won by Rich Gilmore, Mike Gilmore, Steve Giroux, Lynn Watkins and Dwight Summers. It’s good to see these guys back in the winner’s circle it’s been a while for them.

The B- Flight was won by Steve Cook, Bill Henigsman, Cory Read, Jim Oliver and Randy Wold they shoot a great 109, They must like playing early ,we’ll probably see them on the over achievers list next month.

The C- Flight was won by Greg Englant, Dennis Smith, Bob Myatt, David Pemberton and Geno Swartz with a 111. This was a team of new & old members that got together

And had a great day hope to see you guys playing together again.

Our April 18th One Gross & Two Net Tournament has a few openings give me a call at 562-822-2659 and get on the list.

I’m still taking sign-ups for the Member-Member on May 15th & 16th the cost is $170 per team. The Friday night pairings party will have a putting & chipping contest, you will be able to pick the winners of the tournament. There will be hors d’ oeuvres and drinks available. Dates are welcome. Saturday BBQ Sunday snacks and drinks. Reminder special requests for early or late starting times must be made early to be able to accommodate.

Commissioner's Report

Well another slow month at our Commissioners meeting. The strategic Plan has been pushed back for a least another month?? The rounds of golf were down for the month of February, but again that is because Skylinks has been included in the report. That will not be the case starting next month. For Recreation and El Dorado year to date the rounds were down 15.72%. For our course we were up for the month 17.14%, and year to date plus 10.37% Generated funds for the City remain good with over 204 grand for the year. The C.I.P. Fund stands at 89 grand for the year. Some tree trimming at our course is scheduled to begin in April. The Clubhouse area will be landscaped beginning in March. We did have a brief discussion regarding the rough at both courses. Jay Cabbalo stated that at this time of year is when it grows very quickly, but soon it will be dying off?? I myself found it very difficult to find those errant tee shots!!! Junior Golf fund is doing well, with 71 thousand in that "kitty". They are still looking for volunteers for their Friday evening program at Heartwell. See me if you are interested. There will be some nomination forms at our Pro Shop for the Hall of Fame. If you have a candidate please fill the form out and forward it. The Legends course is right on schedule, except for the Clubhouse. The city is still considering some contractors bids. It will in all likelihood not be complete at the time of the Grand Opening of the Legends, which is October 1st. Well that should do it for this months report. Any questions please bring them to my attention or ask me at our general meeting.  See you Soon.

Open Letter to the President

The essence of team play is competition and Sportsmanship.  Two teams matched against each other in battle, then sitting together and commiserating over food and drink. (Usually Lots of drink)

All members of both Teams deserve the accolades of their teammates and peers, but one participant stood out as the quintessential sportsman of this last competition.  Wayne McGhee, not playing his best Golf, never considered anything but pushing on.  It had not been his best day but he hung in there and prevailed on the last hole.  It was not the win, but his sportsmanship & the fact that he never stopped trying. It  made a lasting impression on  me about what Team play competition is all about.

A thankful Teammate

Golf Commission Election

It is time once again for our Club to select the member that we would like to recommend for appointment to the Long Beach Municipal Golf Commission.  The person we recommend must be a resident of Long Beach with no felony convictions (hey, I don’t write the laws, I just report them).  The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m.  In addition to the regular monthly meetings, each Commission member is required to serve on either two or three sub committees, which usually meet 2-3 times per year.  It should be noted that City Ordinance now requires all members of City Boards and Commissions to submit a Conflict of Interest and Statement of Economic Interest disclosure form which becomes public record

As we were not reminded of this election by the City in sufficient time to go through our normal nomination/election process, we will have to go through a condensed process.  Anyone interested in running may contact Bob Livingstone by phone or email to have his name placed in nomination, or may be nominated from the floor at the April General Meeting.   The election will take place at the May General Meeting, with the winner being submitted to the Mayor’s Office.

The Mayor will announce her appointments in June, subject to approval by the City Council.  Questions about the election may be directed to Bob Livingstone. Questions about the Golf Commission’s duties or functions may be directed to Bob or to Long Beach Superintendent of Golf Operations Terry Lortz (562-570-4890).
