President's Corner

Congratulations to all of us that played in this years 4 club tournament, it was a lot of fun and one of the quickest rounds of golf that I have finished in a men’s club event this year.  We did not have much to “think” about before hitting our next shot and the speed of play was much quicker.  Hmm, maybe we should “think” about that.

Our next event is the Member-Guest Tournament on Saturday July 17th, if you have not sent in an entry there is a form on the internet or you can drop a envelope with you name and guests name in the men’s club box at the course.  We do not have an away trip planned this month but we will be going to the SCPGA Champions course on August 7th.  Contact Nick Zamora if you are interested in going.

We will hold the drawing for the Long Beach Open at our July  meeting and you will have one last opportunity to purchase tickets, there will be three tickets given away.

Our August Tournament is the Partner Partner.  This is a really fun event with four different formats.  It is truly a “partner” event so pick your mate wisely.  Fill out the form in the newsletter or show up at the July meeting and get your entry in early, this will fill up quickly.

Our weekender is October 8 – 10 at Singing Hills, one of my favorites.  See Nick Zamora to sign up.  This is a fun trip and will fill up soon.

Hope to see all of you at the meeting in July.

Tom Link
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held June 8, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant provided spaghetti and meatballs with Italian sausage tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.

Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

There were no new members at tonight’s meeting.

Pres. Link opened that Mike “Spanky” Hasselman won 738 units with his hole-in-one at he last monthly tournament.  It is possible that Spanky will have a keg of beer set up for the membership at the July meeting so be sure to mark your calendar.  See Bob Livingstone is you have yet gotten your new insurance coverage.

Mez White, Pro Shop, noted we have a new Superintendent to start this week.  He comes from Pennsylvania.  Getting sand in the bunkers is one of Mez’s priorities. Mel Collins commented that we need a round rake.  This would allow him to take care of the bunkers on hole #3 during our tournaments.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney – Golf Commissioner: Nothing new to comment on.  Skylinks is on track for reopening.

Pres. Link noted that Larry Grant and Robert Forster have both qualified for the Senior Amateur.  This will be a match play contest.  Mez White interjected that Roman Gonzales, Pro Shop, qualified for the Amateur event.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: Jerry Hodge and Tom McCutcheon have joined Mr. Leininger, Don Russell, and Dick Scoville as part of the H/C committee.  If you have anything you want to suggest to be looked at please be sure to submit the thought to our committee.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We just played Oak Quarry.  It was a lot of fun on a beautiful layout.  Course played sort of tight with a lot of lateral hazards.  On Saturday August 7 we are set to play PGA So. California, at Oak Valley (Beaumont).  We have 60 spots on this higher end course.   Be sure to sign up so you don’t miss this one.  Format will be 1 on par 5, 2 on par 4, and 3 on par 3.  This year’s weekender, at Singing Hills, is October 8, 9, and 10.  Be sure to sign up for this as it typically fills fast.

Mel Collins – Rules: Commented on a situation with hitting a ball OB from a bunker and raking the sand before dropping to re-hit, is a penalty to be assessed.  The answer was that this was legal and no penalty applies.

Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing to comment upon.

Mike Marmer – Director: The winner of tonight’s putting contest won with only taking one trip around the course.  Dennis Tramer collected an easy $30 for this journey.  2nd place was a tie between Mez White and Bill “Action” Jackson.  The collected $16 each.  Several G.O.M. cards were submitted for May.  Three members shot net 65, but Tony Jimenez shot an 85 – 21 from the blue tees to win with a 64.  Gross was also closely contested.  A 2004 new member, Sam Vance, had a 68 with a 32 on the backside, but John Tamney edged him out with a 67.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Not many participated in tonight’s 9-hole tournament today (Laker’s game).  Tied for 3rd were Tom Link and Tim Yee, $10 each.  2nd went to David Pemberton, $20.  Tonight’s winner was Vern Herzberg who collected a quick $30.  Dennis noted that the El Dorado Cup is now referred to as El Dorado Match Play Championship.  There will be 16 people in each flight set in brackets like the NCAA basketball March Madness.  One round is played each month beginning in August.  You’ll play your first round and the winners move on until we have the championship rounds.  Cost to enter the tournament is $10.  You will be playing to your current Low Index.  If it goes up or down you will adjust to the new number.

Rich Dennison – Tournaments: The Member-Member tournament went well.  Rich thanked everyone who participated and those who worked the tournament and to prepare for it.  This weekend we’ll have the 4-club tourney.  Format to take 2 on par 3, 3 on par 4, and 4 on par 5 holes.  He still has single openings available.  If you want to play give Rich a call.  We have a block of times for Father’s Day.  We are responsible for filling these times.  If you take a time, be sure to fill your tee slot with at least 4 players or the Pro Shop will be placing people from the stand by list in your group.  Our Member-Guest is in July.  If your guest has an index number it helps.  Once again it is OK to bring a woman to play, if that is your choice.  If enough women get into the tournament Rich will consider a special flight.  Tees will be near the white markers.  Cost is $75 per team

Old Business: None

New Business: Mike Vaughn advised the membership that Bill Cooper, El Dorado Pro Shop, has asked that if we intend to swap merchandise won at the meeting back in to the Pro Shop to kindly do so within the month before the next meeting.  The Pro Shop changes some of the merchandise the carry from time to time and items that were given out months before may not be current items the ‘Shop carries.  The Prop Shop always does what they can to support our Club.  Let us be courteous and redeem these items is a timely manner.

Meeting adjourned.

More raffle tickets were sold.  Don Russell drew the tickets while Pat Nohalty handed out the prizes.  As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.

50-50 was $72 tonight.  The winner was Tim Yee.  That was a quick $36 for Tom and $36 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $90.  The number of Michael Conching was drawn.  Michael was not at the meeting.  The prize will increase to $100 next month.

Finally! It took 6 months to cash, but I’ve done it. Ok I know it was a tournament where you only get to use 4 clubs, but you know; some times you need to keep it simple to do well. I noticed by the score cards that some players had really good scores and some who didn’t have very good scores. I heard from some they like the format, and from others the format sucks, anyway you put it, it was a fine day for golf.

The gross flight was won by Terrell Powell, Dan Holley, Eric Burke, Bill Hunt and Alex Gay, there were several gross teams close this month, congratulations on a good win.

A-Flight was won on a card off by Paul Hoch Fred Gerlach Fredrick Gerlach, Bob Blanchard and a well picked blind draw, now there’s some luck, 4 clubs, 4 players and a great pick.

B-Flight was hotly contested by 3 teams all with 199, the team of Mike Hasselman, Brian O’Malley, Bob Williford, Scott Royal and Joe Escoboza won the card off.

C-Flight also had to go to a card off, the team of Larry Bartley, Lance Lomax,

Jim Crosby, Jerry Leininger and Rich Dennison.

I would like to thank Mike Montgomery for running the 1st tee every month he does a great job getting the groups moving, it’s a big reason we are on time.

We had a great turn out for Fathers day with tee times from 6:30 to 11:00 and I’m sure every one had a great time. There was a mix up with management as to when our 1st tee time was and what rates to charge, I’m told that there were a few members yelling at the pro shop workers, remember they are only doing as they are told, please come and see a Director if you have a problem, it will save a lot of grief for everyone.

The July 17th Member Guest tournament has openings, see me before the July general meeting and get a time.

In August we have our 2 day Partner-Partner this one is a lot of fun, the first day we play, front nine a Cross Over, the back nine Alternate shot. The second day, front nine Partners Better Ball, back nine Aggregate. Line up a partner now this one will fill up.

Commissioner's Report

Well we met one week earlier this month. I will cover the usual topics then get to the real "meat and potatoes"!!! The rounds of golf for all the courses dipped just a little this month. Down .03%. Our course was up at 3.04%. The year to date totals are still on the plus side. All courses being up 4.49% and El Dorado up 9.64%. The revenue generated by all the courses is outstanding. Over 518 Thousand for the month of May. 295 grand going to the City!!.

Our restaurant will be getting a bit of a face lift. Some painting will take place. The Salad Bar area will be taking on a new look. I do not know the exact time frame, but it will be funded by Jim Choura. The tree trimming is about done, and the ball enclosure is also underway. If you have seen some standing water with mosquitoes around, please notify American Golf so the problem can be addressed. That goes for any dead birds you might see also. The Mens club playing hours are in line. The yardage markers hopefully will be completed by the time the golf festival arrives. Junior Golf Funds are very much alive and well. Over 72 Thousand in that account. Dempsey's Pub held a charity Tournament and raised over 1,500 for Jr. golf. Not bad!! Some of the rough in front of some of our tee boxes will be cut back. Apparently there were a couple of areas that extended about 100 yards from the tee to the fairway.

The Legends Project is very well under way and is actually ahead of schedule. By the way the Commission recommended that the new course keep the name Skylinks, and that appears to be what the City wanted all along. So Skylinks will be the name. Well we were presented the proposal for the fees by American Golf at our meeting. Before I get to any specifics I will advise you that this is a proposal and the Commission will meet several times before August when our recommendations go to the City. Keeping in mind the City has the final word. Let me start by saying I will not put every item in this report, but just the major areas. Recreation Park Weekday Resident is now $18.00, proposal $19.50, that is 18 holes. 9 holes, Weekday is at 11.00 for resident, proposal $12.00. Non resident is $24.00 and $13.00. Proposal is for $25.50 and $14.00. Weekend 18 is at $22.00 Proposal $23.50. Non resident is $29.00 proposal is $31.00. For our course. Weekday 18 is at $22.00 proposal for $23.50 this for residents. Non Residents is at $29.00 proposal $31.00. Weekend rate for resident is at $26.00 proposal $28.00. Non resident is at $34.00 proposal $36.00. Again there are proposals for across the board with the average being about $2.00 dollars per category. Cart fees will be increased by a dollar if proposal is accepted. Reservation Card Charges are being asked to be increased by $5.00. And they are asking to Eliminate the Resident Senior monthly card, as well as the resident 12 play card.

Regarding Skylinks the proposals are as follows. Weekday resident 18, $35.00, non resident $45.00. Weekend resident rate $45.00 and non-resident $55.00. Again these are the two major areas. I have  all the details on all the areas but I can't put them in this article, it would be to much. If someone wants these items I can make some copies and put them in our Pro Shop. Keep in mind that these meetings are open to the public and if you would like to come and give us you opinion, then please do so.  Enough for now.
