President's Corner

The turnout for the February meeting was excellent, thanks for attending.  We had a number of items to Raffle and Becky did another great job with the buffet.  If you see her give her our thanks, she puts in a lot of work for the Men’s Club.

The field was full for our February Select drive Tournament (200 Golfers). Thanks to most of you for picking up the speed of play, all groups were able to finish before dark.  We struggled all-day and finished out of the $$$$.  I guess none of us are used to hitting our approach shots from the fairway.

Nick Zamora must have some special power.  Most groups that went to San Louie Rey completed their round without getting rained upon. Unbelievable.  Our group self ignited on the back nine and finished out of the $$$.  Tough Format, waltz counting all four balls, too much for us.  If you are interested in going on any of the away trips give Nick Zamora a call, the next trip is March 7th.

Rich Dennison is all geared up for the March Waltz or Reverse Waltz, yet to be decided.  If you are not in give Rich a call to put yourself on the list.

We hope to see you at the meeting in March; we will be taking sign ups for the April Tournament, 1 gross 2 net.  It’s also not to early to start thinking about the Member-Member in May, pick you partner and start practicing.

President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held February 10, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant provided a beef, ribs, rice, and veggies combo tonight for your $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.

Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Our course General Manager, Mez White, took the podium with a couple of items of interest.  Additional labor has been allocated for weekend care of fairways and bunkers, and a sand bottle refill station will be provided after hole 10.  The course management has been after the gophers and figure they have them 80% contained.  When this gets to 90% the mounds will be leveled (or call Bill Murray to perform his Caddyshack style control).  Tree trimming is scheduled for this spring.  Al Reinking commented on the amount and quality of sand in the bunkers.

Bob Livingstone discussed the upcoming golf show at the Long Beach Civic Center Feb. 27, 28, and 29.  As SCGA is a sponsor they are looking for volunteers.  Approx. 4 hours shift on any day.  If you can help log onto the SCGA website or see Bob for more information.  At that time Bob asked for any new members in attendance to come forward. Several new members were in attendance.  They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Bob Livingstone took them on an informational tour.

Thursday Team Play has qualified for playoffs.  Thursday captain Tom McCutcheon gave his short review of the Thursday vs. Saturday grudge match.  They are 4-1 and can not lose the playoff position.  Tom thanked everyone for their’ support. Saturday captain Jim Baber expressed thanks to the Thursday team for last Saturday’s match, and made comment that McCutcheon’s putts should have been eyed as long as his speech. The Saturday team is in control of our own destiny.  We need to win this Saturday at home Vs. Costa Mesa.  Jim thanked everyone for their’ support, noted Tom Link, Becky and the restaurant staff, and Jim Fuchs (President of El Toro who beat Costa Mesa earlier this year).

Committee Reports:

Golf Commissioner - Ray McElhenney: Everything is in the Newsletter.  This year Ray is on the Junior Golf Committee.  Each Friday evening at Heartwell about 200 kids show up to play.  They are looking for adults to walk with the kids for adult supervision.  Ray answered questions on Skylinks noting that everything is on schedule with October set as the opening target.  Their clubhouse will be remodeled, not replaced.

Rick Evans – Special Events: Thanked everyone for the continued support as he looked around and saw a full room.  Rick pulled a number from the drum and gave a lucky member $20.

Jerry Leininger, Handicap Chairman made note that members who did not receive their index cards in January on the Fore magazine to see him after the meeting as the has them.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Tee times for San Luis Rey Downs are posted on the board by the restroom and on the website.  Format will be a 1-2-3-4 Waltz.  March 7 we play General Old.  Cost is $55, and he needs to close it tonight, as we will be playing before the next monthly meeting.  Format will be a 2-Better Ball, with two blind draw holes where we’ll count them all.  Jurupa Hills is coming up.  The format there will be 3-Better Ball.  The entry for that will be $65.  In May we’ll take a chartered bus to Soboba Springs.  Nick is looking to get more people involved with playing the away trips.  If you have any questions see or call him.

Mel Collins – Rules: Mel had a couple of statements.  He was involved in a Team Play situation where he did not know the proper call on a teammate’s action, looked it up, and made the proper call.  This Sunday Mel intends to be on the course for the first couple of hours marshaling to try to speed up play.  He will have a cart and will be there to help find balls, take players up, etc…

Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing new to bring up.

Mike Marmer – Director: Feb. 28 is the GOY tournament, 2-weeks from Saturday.  Please confirm by calling either him or Dennis Tramer.  For GOM January only a few cards were submitted.  For Net Don Russell turned in a 88 – 22 – 66 which wasn’t quite good enough as gross player Al “Big Horse” Ostberg shot a 71 – 7 = 64.  The Gross prize was determined on a card-off between Mike Marmer and Doug Jones.  Both shot a 70, and Doug won the card-off on the backside.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Quad Club has been cancelled for this year.  See Dennis for the name and phone number for whom to call at SCGA if you can help at the golf show.

Rich Dennison – Tournaments: February tourney is a Select Drive, and March will be a Waltz.  We are discussing if it will be Waltz or reverse Waltz as hole #9 can be a problem with a back up when needing three scores.  Likely we’ll go 3-2-1.  40 teams finished before dark in January.  As Mel noted, we will have some marshals on the course in effort to help the pace.  Everyone needs to do what they can to move it forward.  At the time Rich called the first 10 names for March tournament sign up.

Old Business: None

New Business – The ‘Board has been talking about a member who has been a long time member and done a lot of work with the Club and the game of golf.  Past President Dick Scoville nominated Tom McCutcheon to be instilled as a Life Member.  The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.  Congratulations Tom.

Meeting adjourned.

More raffle tickets were sold.  Don Russell drew the tickets and Rick Evans called them out.  As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.

50-50 was $122 tonight.  The winner was Pete Barton.  That was a quick $61 for Pete and $61 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $50.  The number of Bill Fitzpatrick was drawn.  Bill was not at the meeting.  The prize will increase to $60 next month.

As I sit here watching the rain, I feel very lucky we had such a great golf day for our Select Drive.  For the second Tournament in a row, my team didn’t cash.  I hope we don’t set a new record for the T. C..

The Gross - Flight was won by Mr.’s Collins, Forster, Lester, Orr and Pircher, with a nice 18 under par 198.  There must have been some great golf shots in that group.  The A - Flight won by Mr.’s Fernandez, Johnston, Johnston, Liebeck and McGhee at 25 under par 191.  These guys must be good!  In the B - Flight, we have a new group of members, led by Mike Hasselman.  Along with Bob Williford, Scott Royal, Joe Escoboza and Brian O’Malley.  They shot a very respectable 20 under 196.  We’ll see if that’s beginners luck or not.  In the C - Flight we had to go to a card off.  I haven’t seen these guys in the winner’s circle lately, but when you are 25 under par at 191 you have to cash.  Congrats to Stan Faris, Paul Djukich, Shaun Ferguson, Jay Lechner and Bill Jackson.

Our March 14th Tournament will be a Waltz 1,2,3.  I am sure I will have some spots left, so call and leave your name and number so I can get you in. Remember to get your lottery ticket before the start of the 7:00pm General Meeting for your Tee Time.

It’s already March and we are thinking about the Member - Member in May.  This is always a great Tournament, so get your team together early.  It’s going to be $170 per team this year.  That includes:  2 rounds of golf, Tournament entry fee, Friday night hors d’oeuvres, Saturday BBQ, Sunday snacks and drinks, and more to come!

Tournament Chairman

Commissioner's Report

Well gentlemen another month has come to a conclusion. This months meeting was not filled with much activity. First off the Tournament Committee agreed to add the 11th and final shotgun tournament to the 2004 schedule. It will be held on Monday July 5th at Recreation Park. It will be a 7:00 A.M. start for the Longshoreman of Long Beach. The rounds played in January were down overall but our course was up 4.7%. The revenue generated by all the courses is still strong with over $225 grand going to the city. The C.I.P. funds are in good shape with a balance of $521 grand. There were no Capitol improvements done in January. The Jr. Golf program is doing well. That account balance is over $71 grand. Some additional topics regarding Jr. Golf. Some volunteer work on Friday evenings would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has some spare time during the day, some phone assistance at the Jr. Golf office would be helpful. I can give anyone further details if you are interested. The Skylinks project is still on track, as far as the course goes. The club house situation has hit a minor snag, but that will get resolved shortly. F.Y.I., the name will be Legends at Long Beach. They are currently working on logos so they can go on the signs that will be placed around the course. Finally the strategic plan looks like a go in the next few months. Enough for this time around. Always, if any questions arise, please let me know. See you all at our next meeting.
