President's Corner

Its summertime and we have lots of activities in process.  The Member Guest was a great success with lots of participation.  Thanks to all of you that made the extra effort in bringing a guest to our great course.  I know that it is July and we always see a migration of workers show up that we have not seen all year, but I believe that our new superintendent is doing a great job and he has high hopes to maintain the golf course at its current level.  Thanks to everyone that participated in the Long Beach Pro-am.  We had 6 different groups that represented El Dorado.

The Partner-Partner Tournament is the 20th and 21st of August and we have just a few openings.  Call Rich if you have not sent in your entry.  We will be drawing for spots in the September Tournament at the August meeting.  We will have a split tee start (1 & 10 tees) with a luncheon to follow.   We will be recognizing our past presidents again this year at the Tournament and at the luncheon afterward.  The entry’s in this Tournament are limited to 180 players, show up and get you name in for the drawing.

The Club Championship will be 54 holes this year and there will be 3 different ways that you can participate.  If you want to play in the championship Flight it will be played scratch from the modified Black and Blue Tees.  The Senior Division 50 & up will be played at scratch from the Blue tees.  We will also have flights (how many depending on what type of participation). This Tournament will be played September 18, 24-25th.  See Rich to sign up.

The weekender is fast approaching; we have had more interest this year than in past years, just a few spots left, talk to Nick Zamora if you would like to attend.

At the September meeting, Mike Montgomery will announce a slate of the individuals interested in running for elected positions of the Board of Directors.  If you are interested in an office please contact Mike.  In October, there will be additional nominations from the floor; the election will take place at the November General Meeting.

Come on out and get involved, summer is almost behind us.

Tom Link
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held July 12, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant provided a food selection of food; beef fajitas, cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, and salad for your $6 donation.  President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.

Several members of our Club has qualified and fared well in amateur tournaments.  Jon Monat won the SCGA / NCGA Flights Championship help in the Monterey peninsula in June.  A big round of applause followed, congratulations Jon!  We are placing a spot on the website for members to post comments.  Also, the golf equipment our members donated during the Member-Member weekend that were sent overseas to our troops was greatly appreciated.  Special thanks to Tom Bentele for organizing that gesture of appreciation.

Life members present were Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, Bob Livingstone, and Tom McCutcheon.

The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

No new members were at the meeting tonight.

Committee Reports:

Our golf course Supervisor, Eddie, took the podium to give us a quick course update, and info on what they are doing for the LB Open.  The plan is to keep the course the same all year, not just for this event.  250-tons of sand to be placed in the greenside bunkers, with 100-ton coming after the Open to fill them in.  The greens will be getting faster as they will be turning the automatic sprinklers off and watering them by hand the week preceding the Open.  Several questions followed Eddie’s remarks.

Golf Commission – Ray McElhenney: Ray had nothing to report tonight, no one had any questions.

Special Events – Doug Jones: Doug had nothing new to comment on tonight.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry noted to new members that he has their SCGA membership card.  He then went on to congratulate Rich Dennison for the 4-club tourney which yielded several low scores.  Jerry commented that this was a free pass as it was a non-postable round.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Weekender is fast approaching.  Nick has reservations for 100 players.  He is looking for 8 – 10 more teams.  Confirmation on attendance must be made with your $100 deposit NLT than the August monthly meeting (Aug. 9).  There will also be a $40 fee collected for the prize funds and incidentals.  After the Weekend our next away trip will be to SCGA Member course on Nov. 6.  Several suggestions for next year away trips followed including Oak Creek (Irvine) and the Navy course (Los Alamitos), as well as a few others.

Mel Collins - Rules: Mel discussed the proper ruling on your ball hitting your cart being moved my a person in your group.  A lot of discussion followed.

Communications – Mike Marmer: Nothing new to report.

Rick Evans – Director: GOM for June is as follows: Gross to Eric Burke with a 69, and Net to Steve Liebeck with a 72-7 for a 65.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Entry into the flight tournament will be closed after tonight’s meeting.  The 9-hole event winners were 3rd place – Steve Liebeck, 2nd place – Terry Fulford, 1st place – Jack Wilemon.  Tonight’s Putting Contest was a count them all.  1st place was a tie between Kenny Louie and Terry Henson both carding 33.

Rich Dennison – Tournaments:  Member-Guest is this Saturday paying a Better Ball / Aggregate format.  We have filled the tournament teeing off from 6:00 until 12:30.  For the August Partner-Partner Saturday format has been changed from last year.  We will play a Scramble on the front, and a Cross-Over on the back.  Sunday will be Better Ball / Aggregate.  We are planning to play split tees in September as a team format with a great raffle to follow on Sept. 17.  To be eligible for the Club Championship your index must be 8.4 or lower.  Age for the Senior Championship is 50 and over.  We will hold a Net Championship with in the flights if enough people show interest.  Flyers on this will be available starting this Saturday.

Mike Montgomery coordinated the drawing of the three names for entry into the Pro-Am.  He had one ticket each pulled from the bucket by Tom Herrin, Dan Zenovka, and James Gibson.  This year’s winners of Pro-Am placements were Rich Geismar, Ruben Gonzales, and Tom Bentele.  These guys will represent out Club with a Pro.  We have an uncanny way of winning this event so get ready to play your “A” game guys.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold.  Doug Jones drew the tickets from the drum and called the numbers while Mike Vaughn and Dennis Tramer handed out the prizes.  Prizes included all the usual goodies, balls, hats, range cards, etc…

Old Business: None

Meeting adjourned.

50-50 was $56 tonight.  The winner was Dennis Smith.  That was a quick $28 for Dennis and $28 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $70.  The number of Shaun Latham was drawn.  Shaun was not at the meeting.  Next month the prize will increase to $80.

The weather was great, the rough had been cut and the course was in great shape and there were a lot of good scores. The company was outstanding and I think everyone had a good time. I guess it takes a member guest tournament to have some new names in the winners circle, I want to thank everyone who played in this years Member-Guest, It was a huge success with 89 teams showing up. Gross was won by Steve Liebeck and Doug Stodgel with a score of 108.

In the A-flight the team of Bill Fitzpatrick and Steve Werner won with a score of 103. The B-Flight winners are Greg Englant andVan Johnson with a score of 97.

In the C-Flight Jack Wilemon and Wayne Crook won with a very impressive 92.

Congratulations to every one who cashed.

August 20th & 21st is our Partner/Partner Tournament on Sat we will play the front nine as a Scramble, and the back nine a Cross over. Example on a par four each player tees off,  then you each hit each others  ball, then you pick the one you like and alternate till hole is completed.  Sunday front nine partners better ball, back nine aggregate (count them all). I will be taking signups at the August 9th meeting if there are any times left.

Be sure to come to the August 9th meeting to sign up your team for the September BBQ and Raffle tournament. We will be playing a 5 man team event, the two low handicaps in the group will play one best ball and the other three players will play two best balls.  There is only a limited amount of tee times because we are going to be teeing off from 1 & 10. I hope this summer has been treating you well and has allowed you to play more golf.  The weekender trip to Temecula (September 30 – October 2) is getting closer.  You will need your best game this year, because we will have almost 40 teams.  The most in years!   I do need to know how many ladies wish to play in order to get starting times for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  I need all deposits in to me by August 15th in order to secure your reservation.  Please see me at my table on meeting night.

Our last away trip this year is to the S.C.G.A. Course at Rancho California in November.  I will also be taking sign-ups for this on meeting night.  The cost is $75.00.  You can play as a single or a double or even a 4 man team.  The game will be three best ball.  That’s all for now.

Handicap Chairman's Report

We are getting into more of our “serious golf” events of the year. August starts with the Flights Championships and the Partner – Partner. Please make sure to check the rules sheet at each event for two things; what handicap will be used – LI or Current, and how to post your score, Regular or Tournament. Please read these sheets carefully and if you have any questions, please ask before you play or post. This will save us both from making corrections after the fact.

Flights Championships – Match Play

The following guideline will be followed for the Flights Championships based on the USGA and SCGA recommendation.

“ If at least 13 holes are played, the remaining un played holes, for handicap purposes, shall be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that player is entitled to receive on the unplayed holes.” As an example, if your match ends on the 15th hole, your score on holes 16, 17 and 18 would be par plus any handicap strokes you would receive and no higher. This rule is intended to avoid any inflated scores and also applies if you decide to “play it in” to complete the round.

This rule should also be used any time you play 13 holes but not complete a full round.

Thanks and remember, “try your best on each shot and post all your scores”

Jerry Leininger
Handicap Chairman
