Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held July 11, 2006 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a great selection of Mexican food that included carne asada, tamales, rice, flour tortillas, beans, cheese, tamale sauce, coffee and ice tea for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone, and Tom Link.

Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, and Fred Gibson, represented our life membership.

The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Mike Montgomery advised the membership that SCGA met with our Board of Directors to show what they are doing for the membership. Discounts are available at several courses, car rental agencies, restaurants, hotels, etc. Go to the SCGA website to see what is available to you. Long Beach Open raffle tickets are on sale tonight and at Saturday’s tournament. We are selling the tickets at a rate of $5 each or 6 for $20. Tournament cost is $295 per player.

Bob Livingstone announced that our Superintendent, Eddie Grattini, is leaving El Dorado. The Club gave Eddie a parting gift to show our appreciation of the partnership we have had with him.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Nothing to report, no questions.

Dennis Tramer – Special Events: The par 3 circles will be larger as it seems no one can hit the ones we have been using. They will be 12 ft. radius. We will have Sweeps on both Saturday and Sunday of the Partner-Partner in August.

Chris Benes – Handicap: Noted the last audit went well.  Only a couple cards were not adjusted to the correct score. Changes were made.  SCGA will be auditing some Clubs, chosen on a random basis.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey is July 29. Some times are still available. Cost is $65 per person. Nick won’t be at this one but it will be run by Mike Vaughn and Rich Dennison. Saturday August 26 trip is to Goose Creek, cost there will be $85. Weekender is to be at Lake San Marcos on Sept 29, 30 and October 1. Rooms are available. $100 deposit needed ASAP. Any recommendations for courses next year will be appreciated.

Mel Collins – Rules: Mel fielded questions from the membership concerning dropping the ball at water hazards.

Rick Evans – Director: “Aces Only” putting contest tonight had good participation. Jim Gibson and Dennis Tramer tied for 2nd and received $14 each with (4). Mel Collins won the event and $28 by dropping (5).  G.O.M. winners for June were as follows: Gross – Mel Collins (70), and Net Mark Burkes (58). Both of these rounds were shot in the 4-Club tournament.

Terry Fulford – Director: 9-hole tourney had 14 players. Greg Englant won with a Net 33 ½, Tom Baker took 2nd with a 34, and Phil Nery took 3rd with a 35. Flights are coming up. The first round must be played by the end of August. You only have until July 23rd to sign up. Play will be to your LI or assigned handicap.

Pres. Dennison announced the Club Championship will be 3 rounds at a cost of $135.  You need to have an index of 8.4 or lower to play in the Championship flight. The Senior flight starts at 50.  The Senior and the Championship flights are Gross. Todd Thiele inquired as to if a player has an index lower than 8.4 if they must play in the Championship flight or if they can sign up for the handicap flight. One can elect the handicap flight if they prefer. Lastly, Pres. Dennison advised the membership that on par-3 holes when your group arrives at the green, if the group behind you is on the tee box you need to wave them up. This is good sportsmanship and does help to move the game along.

Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: We are teeing off at 5:36 this Saturday morning. Jerry expressed his thanks for getting the money in early, the field is full. Tee times are posted. We have (5) co-ed teams, and will likely have 3 flights. The format will be Better Ball / Aggregate, front and back.  The Partner-Partner cost will be $95 per player, $180 per team. Teams that play early on Saturday will play late on Sunday, and vise verse. Format to be Crisscross / 2-man Scramble (Saturday front / back), and Better Ball / Aggregate (Sunday front / back). Sunday will be a postable “T” score. A Bar-B-Q will be held on Saturday. Jerry is trying to arrange the split tees with the Pro Shop.

The 2006 Member Guest had all the elements for a successful tournament – good weather, great course condition, and a full field. All that was needed was good golf and a lot of fun. As is normal, the golf stories will be told over and over. The back nine took its toll once again with the count ‘em all. I hope all your guests had a good time. I know I heard several positive comments.

Our speed of play was a little off early, but “ranger” Mel Collins did a fine job restoring a good pace. We actually were running ahead of time by mid morning. Thanks to all for being ready when you were called to the tee and in making the Member Guest a success.

Flight winners were as follows:

Gross     Tom and James Braun     110

Net A      Clay and Floyd McCutcheon   107 (card off)

       B      Jim Gazeley – K. Baratch      98

       C      Keith Quinlivan – Gary Mistlin   98

Coed- D   Pat Lynch – Dayhle Davenport   107

Congratulations to all the winners – a complete list is in the newsletter.

Partner-Partner - August 12 & 13

This is always one of our most popular tournaments and fills up quickly.

Please make sure to sign up and pay entry fees by the general meeting, August 8th. Tee times will not be held if payment is not made by the 8th.

Entry fee is $190 per team and will include 2 beverage tickets per player.

The Partner Partner will be played at the lower of your assigned/ local handicap or your Low Index.

SATURDAY format:

Front nine - 2 man partner scramble.

Back nine is a modified Chapman or cross over:

Par 3’s – Both partners tee off and you select the tee shot to use. The partner not selected then hits the second shot. Continue alternating shots until the ball is holed.

Par 4’s – Each partner tees off and each plays his partners ball for the second shot. Select the ball you wish to score with and alternate shots until holed.

Par 5’s Each partner tees off and hit your partners ball for the 2nd shot.

Switch and hit your partner’s ball for the 3rd shot. Select the ball to score with and continue to alternate shots with that ball until holed.

Sounds confusing I know, but it is easy to follow on the course.

Saturdays Handicaps will be a percentage of the team total handicap. We will use the lower of LI or assigned handicap as the base.

DO NOT POST A SCORE for Saturday’s round.

SUNDAY format will be front nine partners better ball and back nine of aggregate – count ‘em all. We will play to full handicap on Sunday based on lower of LI or assigned handicap.

September BBQ and Raffle - September 16th

Entry - $60 per player  -

Entry fee includes green and tournament fees, 2 beverages and a meal ticket per player. Meal tickets are good for breakfast or sandwich from a selected menu and must be redeemed by 2:30 PM in the grill. The outside BBQ will be available after 2:30 for your convenience.

Format – Fivesomes- 3 Better Ball

Sign up - Drawing for times at the August 8th General Meeting.

We will start from both the 1st and 10th tees at 5:45 in the morning, Starting times will be limited so make sure to sign up and pay fees early to reserve a spot. Our last tee time should be around 8:15. This will allow us time for the Raffle and I know Dennis Tramer will have a few surprises in store for us.

Anyone interested in donating items for the raffle, please contact Dennis.

Please contact me if you have any questions and thanks for your participation.

Hit ‘em long and straight.

Posting for club Tournaments

To all Club members:

“If you forget to post on the day of the Tournament not all is lost, you have 48 hours and 3 ways to post your score.”

1).  Go back to the club and post – make sure you change the date to the day you played
2).  Net Post – go to www.SCGA.org and follow the instructions
3).  Last resort is you can call me at (Chris Benes – Handicap Chairman) 949-857-1303

The Handicap Committee runs an a “Posting Audit Report” for each home tournament.  Failure to Post means the committee will post your round for you and will have SCGA add a ”Penalty Round” that is your lowest differential in the last 20 rounds you played.

So Remember to Post all rounds, Home and Away.

Regards,

The Handicap Committee

Handicap Chairman

SCGA Delegate's Report

The Long Beach Open just finished and our Club is to be complimented for its support of this fine event.

By my count we had almost 20 members in the Pro Am (almost all of whom won something, even if it was just a door prize), at least 10 who volunteered to help as marshals, and of course many, many members who bought raffle tickets for the Pro-Am. This support is not lost on the powers that be, so pat yourselves on the back.

As many of you know, our Superintendent, Eddie Grattini, has left. We will miss him, and we wish him good luck.  I met the new Superintendent, Juan, during the Long Beach Open and I think he will be very cooperative with the Club. I already was able to get him to move the planned greens aerification so as not to interfere with our Club Championship, which I encourage you all to play in...even I will play for the first time in almost 20 years!

Bob Livingstone
SCGA Delegate
