President's Corner

The Partner / Partner Tournament was played just after the heat wave of the summer, it seems we always manage to have the best possible weather for our Tournaments. Thanks to Jerry and the entire Board, for all there hard work that they put in, too make a two-day tournament successful. Congratulations to all who cashed, it was nice to see some new names on the winners sheet. Please when you look at your scorecard and you find a mistake let someone at the table know, it really makes things easier at the end of the tournament, not to have to redo the results because someone did not report a wrong handicap. (Example if you are a 12 and your card says 18 report it, do not play to the 18, it only creates problems.)

This month you will find in the Newsletter, or on the web, a sign up slip for the Club Championship, it will be played over 3 days September 17th 23rd & 24th the coast is $135 for green fees and prize fund. There will be a Championship Flight, which you have to have an 8.4, or less LI index, there will also be a senior flight (50 and older) and a Net flight. For all Flights, you must have played in at least three Tournaments in the past year. The meeting nite on September 12th will be your last chance to enter, so be sure to see me if you wish to enter.

In the newsletter or on the web you will find information on the upcoming weekender September 29th 30th & October 1st at Lake San Marcos in San Diego County, this is always one of the best Tournaments that El Dorado Men’s Club puts on. Feel like a Golf Vacation Sign up for this one, you will be happy you did... Also, be looking for the Thursday and Saturday Team play sign-up sheets in the restroom hallway at the Golf Course.

I will be looking forward to seeing you at the September 12th General Meeting, at the meeting this month we will be signing up for the October 14th Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament. Also see Nick for the weekender & the November 12th Soboba Springs away trip. If you have, any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of the Directors.

Rich Dennison
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held August 8, 2006 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a great selection of Italian food that included lasagna, sausages, pizza bread, coffee, and ice tea for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. Pres. Dennison then advised that anyone wanting to become a Director next year needs to contact Tom Link before the September meeting. The Board’s recommended slate will be advised at the September meeting and nominations from the floor will be taken.   The election will be held at the start of the November meeting.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone, and Tom Link.

Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, and Fred Gibson, represented our life membership.

The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Al Reinking took the podium to let the membership know that today is his partner Bill Alberth’s 65th birthday. The Club sang Happy Birthday to Bill. Pres. Dennison told Bill to shoot his age this weekend.

Bob Livingstone commented on the L.B. Pro-Am and our Club’s support of the event. Bob went on to advise that Club member Steve Pircher won the Oceanside Senior Championship shooting a 66 in the final round.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Not present but had nothing to report.

Chris Benes – Handicap: Was not present, but noted to Pres. Dennison that 1,684 cards were turned in last month. We are in line with the SCGA requirement.

Dennis Tramer – Special Events: This weekend all money will be collected on Saturday for both days. $35 covers Saturday and Sunday Sweeps and Sunday Skins. September raffle tickets will be sold starting this Saturday. Circles will be bigger as it seems no one can get inside the smaller ones.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey went well.  Mike Vaughn and Rich Dennison ran the tourney while he was in Oregon. Results are posted on the bulletin board and the website. Goose Creek tourney is scheduled for August 26. Format to be 2 Better Ball from the Blue tees. The weekender is filling up so be sure to get your deposit in.

Mel Collins – Rules: Mel had nothing to report. No questions from the membership.

Rick Evans – Director: Flights are in process. Brackets are in the Pro Shop as well as on the website. You need to contact your opponent to schedule the match. Match must be played before the end of August. Play to your LI or Assigned Index, whichever is less. You then covert to the handicap for the tees you will play. If tees are not mutually agreed upon Rick recommend to flip a coin to decide. Rick tried a new format for the Putting Contest tonight, a modified Stableford. Winner at +4 for $28 was Larry Grant. It was a 3-way tie for 2nd and $9 each for Ian McCutcheon, Ken Louie, and Steve Giroux. GOM winners for July were Net- Mike Montgomery (62) and Gross Mark Perry (69). Rick advised on the requirements to put in for monthly GOM.

Terry Fulford – Director: 9-hole tourney had 15 players. 3rd place and $15 went to Tom Baker (once again in the money) for his 33, 2nd and $20 with a 32 ½ went to Dave Pemberton, and the winner of $40 with a 32 was Terry Henson. Saturday Team Play sign up sheets are posted. Qualifying matches are scheduled. Everyone has the chance to be a team member so be sure to sign up if you are interested. One needs to have been an SCGA member for at least one year, have an established LI as of April 6, and to have an LI at or lower than 18.4.

Pres. Dennison introduced our new course Superintendent, Juan Donda. Juan spent 14 years at Dove Canyon and time at other venues before coming to El Dorado. His goal is to keep the course up to great conditions. His office is open to us at anytime for suggestions or to ask questions. He plans to aerify the greens in September. They will be doing patch work on some greens that took a beating in the heat. This is to begin Monday or Tuesday of next week. Hopefully the grass will be back to normal height in the next week or so. Juan has a full crew at this time.

Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: Our second 2-day tourney is this weekend. The times are posted. Saturday will be a 2-man scramble (most strokes on front will be 9) with a Crisscross on the back (60% of your back 9 handicap). Be sure to get to the course early to check in on Saturday as we will be on time and ready. Format will be Partner Better Ball on the front, and Aggregate on the back. Sunday format will be played at your LI or Assigned Index, whichever is less. Sunday round will be posted as a “T” score. The September tourney sign ups are starting tonight. Cost is $60 per player. We will be playing split tees, #1 and #10 starting at 6:00 am until 8:30 am. Format to be (3) Better Ball. We have the bar area reserved. First 10 names for the September tourney were called. The grill closes at 2:30, outdoors until 4:00.

Old Business: None

New Business: Mike Vaughn has 2007 Renewals on hand for the email Newsletter people to pick up. See him directly after the meeting.

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold. The prizes included gloves, golf balls, shirts, range cards, and other golf related items. Dennis Tramer pulled the tickets while Terry Fulford distributed the prizes.

50-50 was $49 tonight. The winner was Darry Bush. That was a quick $25 for Darry and $24 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $120. The number of Victor Suhajda was drawn. Victor was at the meeting earlier but left before the drawing. It pays to stay until the end. Next month the prize will increase to $130.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Partner-Partner Tournament. We sure had great weather and it looked like everyone had a good time.

Saturday’s format really put a test to the “Partner” in this event. I heard some good comments on the format as well as the famous “I’m hitting from places I’ve never been before”. There was also the “sorry Partner” overheard quite a few times. – What pressure we can put on each other !!.

Sunday is always the pivotal day of this tournament. I think that also held true this year. We had some low rounds and the usual “if we only would have…….” Pressure, Pressure, Pressure. A special thanks to Bob Livingstone for the score boards. They really made the tournament and look great. Thanks Bob.

Our winners of the flights were as follows:

Gross – Mel Collins – Kevin Orr       174

A       John Wong – David Spencer 167 ½

B        Mike Drew – Russ Harder      165 ½

C        Ruben Gonzales – Jerry Leininger  168 ½ “thanks Ruben!!”

D       Mark Harrison – Shaun Ferguson   167 ½

A complete results list is posted and in this newsletter.

SEPTEMBER BBQ and RAFFLE     SEPTEMBER 16th

The September BBQ and Raffle is full and I do have a waiting list I’m working off. We will be using both the 1st and 10th tees from first light until about 8:36.  I only had 36 team spots and am sorry if you did not get in this tournament, it filled on meeting night. Please make sure to check in at least 30 minute prior to your assigned starting time. If we are running ahead of schedule, we would like to get your group off as soon as possible. We will provide a meal ticket good for Breakfast, Sandwich off a special menu or the outside BBQ. You will also receive 2 drink tickets per player. The raffle will start as soon as the last groups finish and will be held in the bar area of the restaurant. Please make sure to use your ticket in the restaurant before 2:30 PM.

The tournament format will be 3 best balls with 1 Gross and 3 flight winners.

October Orange Ball

Wow, almost Halloween time. Don’t miss this one, most of the stories and laughs from the year come from this event. It is amazing what that Orange ball can do when it’s your turn. Do not forget to select your order for using the orange ball BEFORE you tee off. You will be asked to mark your scorecard at the scoring table, so please be prepared. The Orange ball and 2 best Net balls will be scored on each hole. Entry fee is $45 per player - $225 per team.  Please contact me or any board Member if you have any questions.

November Nassau

November 18th is our Nassau Tournament. This is an individual event and payouts will be for front nine score, back nine score and total. Entry fee is $45.00 per player. I’m planning on paying 1 Gross and at least 4 flights, depending on the number of groups.  Get your groups together early: there will be reduced daylight and I’m not sure how many we will get out.

That’s about it for now.

Thanks for your participation in the Men’s Club and …. Hit ‘em long and straight.

Tournament Chairman

Our August drive trip to Goose Creek was very nice.  We had 60 players come and witness some great conditions.  We have not seen fairways like that in years.  The weather was perfect.  The perfect conditions were reflected in the scores as well.  Mel Collins had a nice 72 Gross, Steve Shure had a great 63 Net, and Mike Vaughn had a good 65 Net.  All the scores and prizes are posted on the web and in the Hallway.  Thanks for coming.

Our big weekender, Sept 29, 30 & Oct 1, is coming up quick.  This is your last chance to sign up.   You must contact me ASAP or sooner.  This trip is a lot of fun and a good way to play three days of golf.  We are going to Lake San Marcos Resort in Lake San Marcos.   You can even bring your wife or girl friend or both!

Our last trip of the year is to Soboba Springs on November 12th.  This is a drive trip.  The game will be a 123 waltz, the cost is $75.  Soboba Springs has just gone through a huge renovation, they say you won’t recognize it.  So let’s check it out, see me at the table on meeting night.

Nick Zamora
Mr. Entertainment (Chairman)

Commissioner's Report

Well after being dark in the month of July, the commission met yesterday and got right down to business. First on the agenda was the election of our chair and vice chair. The chair for this term is Tonny Christensen. Our vice chair is Matt Knabe. Both in my opinion will do a fine job.

Let me begin by advising you, if you did not know already, Larry the general manager at our course gave his two week notice. The superintendent from Skylinks also gave his two week notice. It is my understanding that our new “super” is from Fullerton and his name is Juan. Hopefully he will do as well as his predecessors??

Several new commissioners joined the ranks. Shirley Johnston from El Dorado’s ladies club. Don Lucarelli from Skylinks. And Harold Peabody from Big Rec. Good luck and welcome to them all.

Back to some regular business. I will skip the June reports and go directly to July’s numbers. For the month of July the rounds were down by 5.96%. For our course we were up slightly, .28%. For the year all courses were up by 4.84%. El Dorado was up by 9.32%. The revenue generated was over 1.7 million, with 415 thousand going to the city. The Jr. Golf program continues to grow. That account stands at a little over 127 thousand. Speaking of Jr. Golf, the Mayor’s Trophy event that was held on Friday August 18th raised over 38 Grand for Jr. Golf. That is outstanding especially for its first year. I played in it, and everything was done up right, except for the 6 ½ hours it took us to play. Next year they will be making some changes, so it will run even smoother.

Jay Carballo from American golf went over a new program that is now being installed for our reservation system. It is called EZlinks. Basically it is a system that eliminates paper. When you call in you talk to a person who has in front of them all 3 courses on a computer screen. This will be a real plus once they get it up and running. Also American Golf has announced that it will increase the rates beginning October 1st. This will be based on the current CPI. That % is 5.45. The average increase is around 4.15%. Again the CPI increase is something that American Golf has the right to utilize every year if they so choose. This was given to then by the city via the 4th amendment. Like it or not, that is the way it is!!! Quickly back to the rate increases the commission offered to the city and American golf. Well bottom line they all are back in the fees and charges committee, but American golf gave their recommendations, and surprise they disagree on all but the surcharge at Skylinks!! As I stated prior, these changes/recommendations do not affect our course.

Well I believe I have touched base on everything that took place in our meeting. I will see you at the general meeting.
