President's Corner

The  Red – White & Blue Tournament went off without any major problems. I found it interesting that many players, had many good holes, maybe Red and White tees are to blame for the low Team scores. Congratulations to all who cashed, my team is still without a win, maybe next month.

In the newsletter this month, you will find a sign up slip for the Club Championship.  It will be played over three days, August 12th 18th & 19th.  The cost is $135 for green fees and prize fund.  In the Championship Flight, you have to have an 8.4 or less LI index.  There will also be a Senior Flight (50 and older) played as net.  The maximum handicap will be 10, although you can play down to the 10 if you wish. In the Net Flights, you will play net within your flight.  For all flights, you must have played in at least three tournaments in the past year. The absolute cut off date to enter is August 8th.

The Match Play Flights start this month look in the pro shop for the book that has the phone number of the player you play this month.   Also, be looking for the Thursday and Saturday “Team Play” sign-up sheets in the hallway.

At the August 14th general meeting  Nick will be taking sign ups for the August 25th Oak Quarry tournament., and the September 28th 29th and 30th  Singing Hills Weekender this is always a great tournament sign up early so your not left out.

On August 14th at Joe Jost’s in Long Beach all day, Don Marmion is Celebrating there Family’s 100th year in the Peanut Business, he says come on down and have a sandwich and something to drink, all proceeds go to the Long Beach City Collage Alumni Foundation

I look forward to seeing everyone at the August 14th general meeting.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any of the Directors.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held July 10, 2007 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course back tent area. The restaurant provided an offering of chicken, beef, baked beans, rice, salad, and coffee or ice tea, and cookies for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Bob Livingstone.

Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Pres. Denison noted that the City is looking for volunteers to repair the course following the Pro Am. Teenagers are needed to hold signs to note players scores. Our Club Championship is coming up soon. Winner will get 2008 dues, entry into Club Champions tournament, and their entry to defend the title next year all paid for them by the Club. Our Golf Commissioner, Ray McElhenney, is moving out of Long Beach and can not serve as our Commissioner. Past President and long time staple member of our Club, Mr. Don Marmion has been named to fill the remaining portion of Ray’s term. Ray took the podium and advised he is moving to Murrieta and that August 31 will be his last official day as Commissioner.

Bob Livingstone noted that anyone who has not renewed their hole-in-one insurance to get their’ $3 policy paid. The value is at approximately $650. Mel Collins and Jim Fuchs made Gross, while Jerry Hodge made the Net qualifications for the Long Beach City amateur.

There were a couple of new members at tonight’s meeting. They introduced themselves and went with Bob Livingstone for the new member tour.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Issue covered following meeting opening.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick was not at the meeting tonight so Greg Englant is taking sign ups for the San Luis Rey event on July 28.

Brett Holloway – Special Events: Bret apologized for the small circles at the 4-club tourney. The next ones will be 16 feet, not 8 feet. LB Pro Am tickets will continue to be sold at the tournament Saturday. If you want to get them now they are available. Amen corner will be the Special Event. Note that the August Bar-B-Q and raffle will be held before the next Club meeting. Be sure to get your entries paid before hand.

Tom Retterath – Handicap: Nothing to report. No questions.

Mel Collins – Rules: Mel went over a situation that happened at the SCGA course on provisional ball in a bunker and what constitutes a penalty when raking.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Mike stressed we keep losing money on the raffle, and has been the trend the last several years. The Club pays the entry fees for 4-members in the Pro Am (3 amateurs and our President = $1,200). Be sure to get your tickets. The drawing is this Saturday after the tournament.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Today’s 9-hole tourney went from 20 players to 6. 2nd place and $10 went to Terry Fulford, while Tom Conlisk took the win and $20.  Flights are coming up and Dennis needs 8 more players to get his anticipated 64. If he gets 60 all #1 seeds will get a first round bye.

Terry Fulford – Director: Putting Contest tonight was $3 per round, 2-round maximum. Terry will likely try the $3 per round again next month. $30 for a 2-under 16 went to Tom Retterath. There were two 17’s and an 18 as well. June Net GOM was Ruben Gonzales (83 – 15 = 65) while Gross went to Tom Retterath with a smooth 69. Team Play signups are coming up. Matches start in December.

Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: The Shotgun start went well. Everyone did a good job. This Saturday the format will be Red, White, and Blue, counting 2 Better Ball on the front and 3 Better Ball on the back. The tees will be set in different positions using our blue El Dorado Men’s Club markers. Average distance will be from the white markers. Post the round from the white tees. There will be a sheet at the table telling you which holes are from Red, White, or Blue. August is the Bar-B-Q and raffle tournament. Price $65 per player includes Bar-B-Q, (1) raffle ticket, and golf. We’ll be using the split tees as we only have 32 starting times. Format will be 1-Gross and 2-Net. September tourney will be Partner-Partner.

Old Business: None

New Business: Pres. Dennison informed the membership that the Board of Directors has recommended that annual dues be increased by $5. Measure proved unanimous (except Don Russell).

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Golf balls and cash were the prizes tonight. Jon Monat drew the numbers and called them out while Bret Holloway handed out the prizes.

50/50 Drawing was for $20. The winner was Jay Johnston. That was $10 for Jay and $10 for Jr. Golf.

The membership drawing tonight was for $100. The number of Robert Barmeyer was drawn. Robert was not at the meeting.  Next month the prize will increase to $110.

Our July, Red, White and Blue tournament is in the books and thanks foes to Mel Collins and Bob Livingstone for the course set up that was full of surprises. The feedback I got was that it was a nice change of pace and a fun day. Speaking of pace, most all of our rounds were at the 4 ½ hour mark and the course never really backed up any. Thanks to everyone for keeping up with the group in front f you.

The winning teams in each flight were:

Gross  - 167   B. Hasselman, J. Hasselman, G. Sawaya, C. Price and B. Huntington who edged out Team Collins –

A Flight – 150   B. Hunt, A. Gay, D. Holley, E. Burke and G. Parkin

B Flight - 146   R. McBride, D. Smith, T. Barnes, G. Liechty and J. “who is on my team” Lopez.

C Flight – 146 The Fitzgerald’s (MW, Andrew, Nick and Nicholas) and the famous “blind draw”.

D Flight 144   P.Djukich, B. Jackson, S. Faris, T.Herrin and B. Fredette.

Congrats to all who placed and Thanks to those who played.

August BBQ and Raffle – August 11th

Due to some scheduling changes last year our August BBQ and Raffle will be played before our next General Meeting.

We will be starting both the first and tenth tees from 6:03 until 8:18 am. Please make sure to keep up with the group in front of you so we start our Raffle close to 1:30. Based on the wedding schedules, we will let you know where the raffle will take place – tent or bar area. Format is 1 Gross and 2 Best Net ball per hole.

I am working off the stand by list and will need to know any team changes by Tuesday, August 7th due to not having a meeting before the tournament. Please remember if you do not call me with your changes and you are a “no show”- you will be responsible for the entry fees. If you give me the time, I usually can fill your spot. No one likes surprises on tournament day.

September 15th & 16th   Partner-Partner

Our second big tournament of the year is the Partner – Partner fills quickly so get a partner and get your entry in early. This is a sign up tournament and the form is in this newsletter. I f you want to arrange your own foursome, please do so. Just make sure to list that information on your entry form and I will try my best fill your request. If you have any special requests as to starting time either day, please include that information. Asking for 8:00 am each day is not a special requirement, just a “wish list”. I will also be taking sign ups at the General Meeting on August 11th if you want to take that chance on getting in.

Our format will be as follows; Saturday_ Nine holes of 2 man scramble –and nine holes of Cross Over. Our cross over will play as follows: Par 3’s – Both players tee off, select your best shot, players ball not selected hits next, then alternate shots until the ball is holed.

Par 4’s – Both tee off – hit your partners’ ball for the next shot. Select the best ball and alternate shots until holed.

Par 5’s – Both tee off, hit your partners ball- switch and hit your partners ball again – select best ball and alternate shots until  holed. Believe me, it is easier to play than explain and will make you appreciate a good shot from your partner.

Entry fee will be $95 per player -$190 per team. There will be 1 Gross and 4 Flights winners.

Please call me if you have any questions.

October 13th “Dreaded Orange Ball “

Start getting your teams together now for the Orange Ball – this one will fill quickly.  For those of you new to the Orange Ball, each player takes his turn using the Orange for a complete hole and that score must be used. You then pass the Orange ball to the next player and so on until the round is completed. You can not pick up with the Orange Ball –count every stroke until holed. We’ll adjust for you at the scoring table at the end of your round. You will not believe what happens when it’s your turn with that “dreaded” ball. Lots and lots of stories come out of this tournament.

Sign ups will be taken at the September 11th General Meeting –don’t miss this sign up if you want to play in October.

Entry will be $ 45 per player and $225 per team.

As you can see, we have a lot going on in the next few months; a great chance to get involved with the club’s activities.  If you have any questions on tournaments, please call me or contact any Board member for assistance.

Entertainment Chairman

I hope you all are having a great summer with some golf mixed in.  Our trip to San Luis Rey Downs was July 28th.  We had 60 players and everything went according to schedule, except our last group had some trouble with the I-5 Freeway.  There were three separate car accidents which blocked the freeway in several places.  They arrived just in time.   Goes to show you how practice is so overrated, Larry Grant and Jim Fuchs had a bunch of birdies and Larry finished with a 72.  Go figure.  The results are posted and I will be at the meeting to pass out the winnings.

The August trip is to Oak Quarry, the date is August 25th.  Cost is $100.00 with a 8:00 am shotgun.  We will be playing 2 Scores on the 3’s and 4’s and 3 Scores on the 5’s.  This is a very interesting course, you must play.

Finally, it is time to push the weekender scheduled for September 28, 29  and 30.   The place is Singing Hills, down San Diego way.  I will have a flyer at the meeting.  So check it out and let me know.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and remember to “drink lots of fluids”.
