President's Corner

What can I say but thanks to everyone who played in the Aprils - one Gross - two Net tournament. We started at 6am and our last group went off a little after 1pm on time, that is a lot better than a normal Sundays pace of play. Congratulations to all who cashed, again my team could not get to the pay window.

At the May 8th General Meeting you can see Jerry for a tee time on Father’s Day, if you sign up for a tee time you are responsible for that time, if you don’t show up for the time you have to pay for the green fee’s anyway. Be sure to put your name in the pitcher before the start of the meeting for a tee time for the June 23rd 4-club tournament.  The Member-Member Tournament is on the 19th & 20th of May. The Friday night Cocktail party and Putting contest on the 18th has turned into quit a popular event, do not miss it, it all starts at 5:30. Remember to see Nick to sign up for the Soboba Springs away trip on the 26th of May.

If you have, any questions or concerns about the club feel free to contact any of the Board Members at any time.

Rich Dennison
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held April 10, 2007 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course back tent area. The restaurant provided an offering of beef tri-tips, grilled chicken breasts, baked beans, rice, rolls, veggies and the normal offering of salad, and coffee or ice tea for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.

Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: The Mayor’s Trophy event will be held at Skylinks. All proceeds will go to Jr. Golf. Cost will be $175 / person which include green fees, cart, your drinks, a meal, and prizes. Ray noted that some of the CIP projects have been approved, but no timeframe has been established. The security gate, the fencing along 18, the sand in the bunkers, and irrigation are in priority order. Lastly, the City tested a new Caddyshack-type gopher control system that runs a tube down into the holes and pumps an ignited a combination of oxygen and propane into their tunnel system. It worked real well. The course purchased one for $1,000. Jason has vowed to keep the gophers under control. The LB courses have received the defibrillators and are to be trained in the use.

Bob Livingstone – SCGA Rep: Bob informed the membership that Mel Collins and Atul Anand qualified at the USGA Southern California Mid-Amateur and will be playing at Mission Viejo on April 23 and 24. Bob noted that the SCGA is hosting a Casual Golf day for green fee and cart for $50. Information is available on the SCGA website. We have started a new Hole-In-One insurance fund. Be sure to get your policy renewed for $3.

One new member introduced himself, stating his name, occupation, and claimed (5) handicap. He went with Bob Livingstone for the informative tour.

Committee Reports:

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: SCGA Member course is coming up April 29. He has 18 teams so far. See him if you want to play. We’ll start at 8:30, playing a 1-2-3 Waltz from the White tee markers. Soboba Springs trip is scheduled for May 26. Cost is $65. Format is TBD.

Bret Holloway – Special Events: Brett informed the membership that we have been losing money each month due to lack of participation in buying raffle tickets. Brett took a clap vote to stop or continue. Continue won by the narrowest of margins. Special Event for this Sunday will be a Zorro, Net par or better on 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15! He will have some bulls-eye par 3 holes for A, B, and C Flights. Urged everyone to buy raffle tickets for tonight’s drawing.

Tom Retterath – Handicap: Last tournament everyone did pretty good, but some forgot to post while others posted as a “T” round.

Mel Collins – Rules:  Mel discussed unplayable lies. Remember you have options to consider, for instance if you hit from a bunker and over the green and next to a fence you can elect to go back to the bunker and hit again. You can always play from the place you last hit taking stroke and distance.

Sometimes it is better to take an unplayable than to drop. A few questions followed. Be sure to carefully word any option to not be construed as giving advice.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Nothing to report.

Dennis Tramer – Director: Golfer Of the Year tournament went well. Our Net GOY is Don Marmion (84 – 13 = 71), and our Gross GOY is Clay McCutcheon shooting a 71. Nine Hole tournament scores had a 3-way tie for 2nd with 33 ½ between Paul Wildy, Chris Benes, and Tim Hodge. The winner was David Pemberton (38 – 6 = 32). Quad Club is fast approaching, April 28 at Recreation Park, $30 + cart + prize funds. Only 35 people have signed up. We need 40 players to have a full team. We will also have a $5 side game. Flights sign ups will be available in May.

Team Play – Terry Fulford noted his team did an outstanding job. We lost the playoff match on a sudden-death shootout. Terry thanked everyone for their participation. It was fun.

Terry Fulford – Director: A lot of GOM cards turned in for March. Net winner in a run away was Rick Evans (77 - 17 = 60). Gross winner was Bill Hunt (71). Putting contest was a count them all. Roger Scaife won $42 with a 3-under 15. John Tamney took 2nd with a 2-under 16 and won $22.

Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: This Sunday we will play a 1-Gross and 2-Net format. There are some single spots available. We will play from the blue tees. You take the best Gross then the Net scores. Sign ups for the May 19 & 20 Member-Member. We will have a Friday evening Pairing Party with putting and chipping contest. Steve Shure has volunteered to do the horse race again. Pigeon sheets will be available to note inter team games. Jerry advised that the Member-Member requires one to have played in (3) Club events to qualify for winnings. The winners will go to the four-ball match so long as their’ handicaps difference is not more than 10 and their’ indexes are 18.3 or lower. We have some Father’s Day times available. Note that if you take a time you are fully responsible for the fees to the Prop Shop. The Club is involved only in getting the times.

Old Business: None

New Business: None.

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold.  During the raffle, the prizes included all the usual goodies plus a lot of Girl Scout cookies. Jon Monat called out the numbers, Brett Holloway placed the prizes on the podium, and Terry Fulford handed them out.

The membership drawing tonight was for $80. The number of Tom Baker was drawn. Tom was at the meeting earlier but was not present at the drawing.  Next month the prize will increase to $90.

Mike Vaughn
Secretary

PS: The number for the Membership drawing was that of Gabriel Valdez, not Tom Baker, got ya Baker.

Tournament Chairman

Our April 1 Gross- 2 Net tournament hosted over 200 members – that is a great turnout and on behalf of the Board of Director’s – Thanks for your participation.

Our earl groups had a few holes with light drizzles, but after that we have a great day for golf. The greens seemed a bit slow but I think that was the Indian not the arrows that had the problem.

A flight results had B. Hunt, T. Powell, D. Holley, E. Burke and A. Gay taking first place with a 197. B Flight winners were Bret and Brandon Holloway, M. Perry, G. McIsaac, and S. Sturdevant at 193. Our C Flight winners at 202 were T. Retterath, S. Cook, W. Brown, C. DeMarco, and M. Creem. The team of G. Colazas, R. Owen, R. Sullivan, M. Gonzales and D. Stout took the D Flight with a 203.  A complete list of the teams who placed is in the newsletter. Congratulations to all our winning teams.

Member- Member:  May 19- 20th

Sign ups for our Member- Member have been very good with over 70 teams registered. Most all of the 70 have also paid. Our limit is 90 teams so please get your entry fee and sign up sheet in as soon as possible if you are interested in playing in the tournament.

We will start off the Member- Member on Friday evening with our putting/chipping contest, parings party and social hour(s).  We will probable start somewhere around 5PM but check with Dennis Tramer or Terry Fulford for the exact schedule. This is a fun evening and gets your competitive juices started. You will probably find other teams who think they have a better chance of winning and willing to back it up with more than talk if you so interested.

Saturday is the Partner’s Best Ball format and on Sunday we switch to the “count ‘em all or aggregate format. The entire week end is player to the lower of your Low Index or Tournament Index from the blue tee markers.

A reminder, tournament fee of 190.00 per team includes golf, tournament fees, drink and food tickets. Your meal ticket includes one breakfast or sandwich from a special menu.

June 4 Club.

Our June 23rd tournament is the 4 club tournament and yes, putters do count as a club. You will only be allowed to carry 4 clubs so please do not show up with a full set. Our format will be 3 Best Balls and we will play from the White tees. Flights will include 1 gross winner and at least 3 flight winners depending on the number of teams entered.

I will also have a limited number of tee times for Father’s Day, June 17th. If you get a tee time please remember that it is your responsibility to pay for that time. You do not pay the Men’s Club. If you accept the time, you accept the cost of that time and No shows will be charged and be held financially responsible.

I will be taking sign ups for both the 4 Club and Fathers Day times at the meeting.

Thanks and please call me if you have any questions.

Our April trip to Rancho California is in the books.  The weather was nice; the course was in perfect shape although the greens were especially tough.  And we used a different format that kept everyone in the game.  The format was 4 Scores on Par 3’s, 3 Scores on Par 4’s and 2 Scores on Par 5’s.  Some teams did real good and some teams not so good.  But I did get a lot of discussion about the day so that is always great.  The results will be posted in the usual places.  Thanks to everyone for showing up.  We had 68 players.  The best of the year.

Our May trip is to Soboba.  The cost will be $70.00/each.  The format will be a 123 Waltz.  This is a drive trip.  The date is set for Saturday, May 26th.   Tee times start at 9:30 am, I will take sign ups at our next general meeting.

Nick Zamora
Mr. Entertainment (Chairman)

Commissioner's Report

Well this should not take very long to discuss the Commissioners Meeting for April!! Nothing at all going on! Let’s begin with the rounds for the year. For all the courses the rounds were up by 3.19%, for March the rounds were up by  14.54%. That is outstanding. The month to date rounds for El Dorado were up by 14.04%, with the year to date rounds up by 4.74%. The revenue generated was a very nice 1.5 million. El Dorado contributed over 462 Thousand!! The city received over 376 Thousand!! Without golf, our City may be in some real trouble??

As always the Jr. Golf program is flourishing!! Their account is over 145 Thousand, with 389 members. The Little Linksters has an account in excess of 96 Grand. If you are ever in a position to assist/volunteer for Jr. Golf, let me know and I will get you headed in the right direction. The training for the defib’s has already taken place, So if you have a heart attack on one of the Long Beach Courses, you should be in good hands??!!. Finally the CIP projects that were approved are moving forward. Well like I said, not much happening. Any questions you may have, please let me know. See you at the course.

Golf Commissioner
