October 2007 Volume 25, Issue 10 MEETING NIGHT - OCTOBER 9th - 7:00pm Upcoming Events October13 - The Dreaded Orange Ball Sign Up November 10 - Menifee Lakes Drive Trip November 17 - Individual Nassau Results September 15 & 16 - Partner Tournament President's Corner Meeting
Minutes Tournament Chairman The Partner / Partner Tournament was played just after the heat wave of the summer, it seems we manage to escape the unpleasant weather and have the best possible weather for our Tournaments every month. Thanks to Jerry and the entire Board, for all there hard work that they put in, too make a two-day tournament successful. A special thanks to Livy for the great Score Boards he does for our 2-day events. Congratulations to all who cashed. My partner Tom and I had plenty of chances to win but just could not make that putt when it was needed. I did hear of a team that took a team score of 14 on Sunday, on hole 12, and that they missed cashing by 2 strokes, OUCH! Overall, I thank the course played tough, because of all the high individual scores on Sunday. Give Jerry a call if you want to play in the Orange Ball Tournament on the 13th of October, he has group and individual openings available. I will be looking forward to seeing you at the October 9th General Meeting, at the meeting this month we will be signing up for the individual Nassau Tournament, you can sign up as a group or as an individual. Nick will be taking sign ups for the Menifee Lakes, away trip on November 10th. If you have, any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of the Directors. Rich
Dennison
The monthly meeting was held September 11, 2007 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided an offering of beef and gravy, veggies, salad, and coffee or ice tea, and cookies for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. Upon completing the allegiance Pres. Dennison requested a moment of silence be observed to honor those killed in the attack on New York City six-years ago today. Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien. Tom Burris and Fred Gibson represented our life membership. The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted Jason Koh – Jason provided update on the course and the conditions. Hole 15 is in bad shape. Jerry Hall is to replace Juan as the Greens keeper. American Golf is selling a lot of its properties. They are strong financially. They are not going to place a temporary green for 15 to help it come back. Pres. Denison informed the membership that Larry Grant won his first two matches in the Sr. Amateur. Steve Friend also qualified for the Sr. Amateur. There were no new members at tonight’s meeting. Mike Montgomery read the slate for the 2008 Board of Directors; President – Jerry Leininger, Vice President – Dennis Tramer, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, and for Director at Large – Mel Collins, Terry Fulford, Brett Holloway, and Tom Retterath. Don Marmion has replaced Ray McElhenney as our Commissioner to complete Ray’s current assignment and hopefully beyond the Commissioner election next spring. The Club Championship was a 3-day tourney this year. Flights winners were Mark Harrison, David Pemberton, and Jerry Leininger, and our new Club Champion is Steve Friend. There were no updates on Team Play. Committee Reports: Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Not present and Don has not been to a meeting so he has nothing to report. Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Singing Hills the end of the month. Nick hopes to have 20 teams. We’re playing Menifee Lakes Nov. 5. It will be an 8:30 Shotgun, $75 per player, 3 Better Ball format. Brett Holloway – Special Events: This weekend there will be Sweeps Saturday and Sunday. $20 per event. Both Net and Gross Sweeps will be run. Special Events $10 per player will be the par 3 holes on Saturday. Sunday there will be a Net Par or Better on each of the holes 3-8-13-16. As the “C” Flight seems to be Accuracy Challenged, Hole 17 will be “on the green”. The scrip is not yet available from the August tournament. Tom Retterath – Handicap: Nothing to report. No questions. Mel Collins – Rules: Upon hearing 17 would be “on the green” he’ll see to it that the tees are at the very back. Mel discussed a hole such as #8 where you hit the ball towards the water, but the ball traveled through the trees. Unless you can provide reasonable evidence that your ball went in the lake you can not drop as a lateral hazard. You must play it as a lost ball. Mel answered a few questions which followed. Dennis Tramer – Director: Today’s 9-hole tourney had 13 players. 1st place and $30 went to Tom Baker. 2nd place and $19 went to Mark Miller. 3rd place was a tie for $8 each between Ruben Gonzales and Vern Herzberg. Flights are moving along. The first round has been completed. Dennis noted that Jason Koh has really helped us in getting the times. Terry Fulford – Director: Andrew Fitzpatrick picked up his plaque for his July Gross GOM (73). Net winner for August was Mark Harrison (65), while Gross went to Steve Friend for a very nice 69. Both Mark and Steve shot these rounds from the back tees during the Club Championship. Putting Contest tonight had a good turnout. Tie for 3rd and 4th (16) between Mark Harrison and Mel Collins ($7.50 each); while there was also a tie for 1st (15) between David Pemberton and Alex Gay ($40 each). Next month will be the last Putting Contest this year as we’ll lose Daylight Savings Time. Cost per round will likely be $10. Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: Saturday will be a 2-man Scramble on the front with Cross Over on the back. Your’ handicap on Saturday will be 40% of your LI or Assigned, whichever is lowest. Orange ball will be in October, with the Nassau in November. Old Business: None New Business: Stan Faris, President of Victoria, advised his Men’s Club is hosting a golf weekend in Las Vegas on November 2, 3, and 4 and has opened it to members of other Men’s Clubs. Meeting adjourned. Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Golf balls and golf equipment were the prizes tonight. 50/50 Drawing was for $30. The winner was Terry Henson. That was $15 for Terry and $15 for Jr. Golf. The membership drawing tonight was for $120. The number of Tim Barnes was drawn. Tim was at the meeting, but instead of accepting the check he donated the winnings to Jr. Golf. Next month the prize will start again at $50.
Mike
Vaughn The Partner - Partner tournament in September had its usual mix of some very good golf by some and some very good stories by other groups. It is amazing how a different tournament format and playing 2 rounds can make such a difference in the scores. Those who showed their ability on the course were as follows: Gross – Brett Holloway – Mark Perry 175 A Flight – Brian Bovie – Tony Glorioso 169 B Flight - John and Rich Hasselman 167 C Flight – Don Marmion – Dan Bellamy 167 D Flight – Tim Braswell – Keith Quinlivan 172 You can see the full field results in the newsletter. Congratulations to all of our winners and thanks to all who participated.
OCTOBER Tournament – October 13th The next tournament, The Dreaded Orange Ball, October 13th has a few full team openings later in the day so if you want to play, please call me. I will also be at the October General meeting early to fill any open spots. Tournament fees are $ 45.00 per man or $225 per team. The Orange Ball tournament will be a 3 Best Ball format where you must use the Orange Ball on each hole. In this tournament the Orange ball is rotated within your group on a pre determined order. Each group may select the hitting order. Please make sure to have your “hitting order” with you when you check in. Each team must have their card marked before you tee off on the first hole. It saves a lot of time and confusion if you have come to the check in table with your line up available. In the event you do not come prepared, the order will be as it appears on the scorecard. We will have one gross and 4 team flights for this event.
NOVEMBER Tournament – November 17th The Nassau Tournament will be on November 17th and will pay for Low totals on the front nine, back nine, and total scores. This is an Individual score tournament within your flight. No teams, no place to hide guys so play hard…. Current index or assigned index will make up our handicaps I will be taking sign ups at the October General Meeting based on our drawing for tee times. Cost will be $45.00 per player. One gross and 4 flight will make up the payout. That’s it for now – hit 'em long and straight. Jerry Leininger September 2007 Treasurer's Report
Al
Ostberg The September weekender (hopefully) came and went with no real problems. The weather is suppose to be in the 80’s, so we got that going for us. All the results should be figured out by the meeting time, so stay in touch if I owe you any winnings. The last trip of the year is to Menifee Lakes in Sun City (between Perris and Hemet). Menifee is approximately 70 miles from El Dorado Golf Course. The date is November 10th. We are going to have a shot gun start at 8:30 am. The cost is $75.00 each and the format will be 3 Best Ball between 4 teammates. I will be taking sign ups at the meeting or you can email me. Either way let me know. I would like to put this in the jar as soon as possible. Nick Zamora No report this month. Don Marmion See the updated Handicap Information. Tom Retterath No report this month. Bob Livingstone
