Minutes Tournament Chairman The August Bar B Q Tournament was a success again this year with only a very short wait between nines. At the raffle, after the Tournament Bret had many great prizes to hand out, Along with about a thousand dollars in cash. Congratulations to all who cashed, it was nice to see some new names again on the winner’s sheet. I want to Thank Livy for all the hard work he puts into the Club Championship, setting the course up and filling out the tournament sheets, and thanks to Al Ostberg and Tom Retterath for running the check in table. Thanks to the 8am players for setting the Tees and raking bunkers, without everybody’s help, the Club Championship would not be the success it is. Congratulations to Steve Friend for his hard fought win for the Club Championship, Steve works harder than anyone I know on his game, and I am sure he will represent us well. Our Senior Champion this year is Jerry Leininger congratulations Jerry. In the A-Flight David Pemberton won on a card off over Greg Colazas, those two players had a great battle. In the B-Flight Mark Harrison won on very solid play. Thanks to everyone who participated in this tournament. I will be looking forward to seeing you at the September 11th General Meeting, at the meeting this month Jerry will be taking sign ups for the Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament October 13th, also be sure to get in the Partner / Partner Tournament September 15th & 16th. Also, see Nick to sign up for the Singing Hills weekender September 28th 29th & 30th. If you have, any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of the Directors. Rich
Dennison
The monthly meeting was held August 14, 2007 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course back tent area. The restaurant provided an offering of tamales and beef fajitas with salad, and coffee or ice tea, and cookies for your nominal donation of $7. President Rich Dennison called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien and Bob Livingstone. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership. The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were not immediately accepted as Tom Conlisk saw $6,000 for trophy. Bob Livingstone moved the report be approved with condition of research to clarify this matter. Pres. Denison informed the membership that Larry Grant and Steve Friend both qualified for the US Senior Amateur. Steve won our Club Championship by opening it up with a 69. Great playing guys! There was one new member at tonight’s meeting. He introduced himself and went with Bob Livingstone for the new member tour. Team Play sign up will be on the board by the end of the week for Saturday. Thursday sheet is already posted. Committee Reports: Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Not present Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey was the end of July. It was a good tournament with some new winners. Saturday August 25 we’ll go to Oak Quarry, $100 with an 8:00 am Shotgun start. A few single places are still available. Format will be 2 scores on Par 3 and 4, and 3 scores on Par 5 holes. See Nick with your money for this. Singing Hills is this year’s Weekender the end of September. Flyers are available for entry. A pretty good interest so far. Same format as normal Weekenders. We’ll have a big hospitality suite. Bret Holloway – Special Events: Thanked everyone who participated in last weekend’s tourney and raffle. Tonight’s raffle will be for hats, balls, and possibly cash. For the September scramble Bret passed along a special thanks to Padraic O’Hara for the many Toyota based donations he provided. Tom Retterath – Handicap: Nothing to report. No questions. Mel Collins – Rules: Concept of if a person places one (1) of his clubs in the wrong bag before teeing off would someone else receive a penalty with the extra club in their’ bag. The player with the 15th club would be assessed a 2 stroke penalty. If this happens during the play of a round and the player does not use the other club there would be no penalty incurred. Mark Harrison asked about marking another’s ball on the green. Upon Mel advising the proper procedure Tim Braswell asked about marking another ball without advising another that he was going to mark it. Jim Fuchs asked about repairing a pitch in front of his ball on the apron. One is entitled to the lie they had before the subsequent shot, Rule 13. Mike Montgomery – Communications: Mike discussed the terrible pace of play at the Club Championship. It took 6 hours to complete the rounds. Mike stressed the importance to go out and get it done. Jim Fuchs commented that even with City tournaments players are paranoid to shoot as they may be out of order. Mike said in our tournaments you are to play ready golf to move the game along. Dennis Tramer – Director: Today’s 9-hole tourney went from had 6 players. 1st place and $20 went to John Davis. 2nd place and $10 went to Terry Fulford. Flights are slowly moving along. Has been a lot of stuff going on this month to be able to play your match so the NLT date has been moved to September 3rd. Has a 9:30 time for this Saturday and another for Sunday if you need a time to play your match. Dennis Smith has a 7:00 am time on Monday and room for two (2) players. Terry Fulford – Director: Putting Contest tonight was $3 per round, 2-round maximum again. For the last event of the year he is thinking about going $10 with single round only. David Pemberton won tonight’s event and $40. 2nd place was a tie between George Manyak and Mike Smith for $19 each. The GOM cards were submitted in no particular format, much less the format required. Terry was nice this month and put away his DQ marker. Gross winner was Andrew Fitzgerald with a 73, while Net went to David Ahmadi with a 62. Terry showed an example card that follows the required format. This info is also found in the GOM book but no one reads instructions. Jerry Leininger – Tournaments: Bar-B-Q tourney went well. Our next tourney will be the Partner-Partner. Place your entry in the same envelope as your partner and people you want to play with. If you have a request for a certain time one day, note that as well. Jerry will do what he can. 6:08 will be the first tee time. Saturday format will be 9-hole 2-man Scramble, then Chris Cross on the back 9. Sunday will be Best Ball front then Aggregate on the back. Jerry explained the card off procedure. $95 per player = $190 per team. October tourney will be the Orange Ball. Old Business: None New Business: Bob Livingstone commented that during his 26 years as a member he has seen a lot of things happen in this Club but nothing like this year’s Pro-Am. Don Russell, Paul Wildy, Tim Yee, and pro Brian Gonzales won the Pro AM Gross. It is time to think about running for a Board of Directors position or to be appointed. If you are interested see either Pres. Rich Dennison or Bob. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at the September meeting, with the elections in November. Meeting adjourned. Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Golf balls and golf equipment were the prizes tonight. Bret Holloway drew the numbers and called them out while Tom “King” Conlisk handed out the prizes. 50/50 Drawing was for $12. The winner was Terry Henson. That was $6 for Terry and $6 for Jr. Golf. The membership drawing tonight was for $110. The number of Frank Winn was drawn. Frank was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $120.
Mike
Vaughn In our August BBQ/ Raffle, you actually had two opportunities to be in the money: Your team’s golf ability and the Raffle. Thanks to Bret Holloway for his shopping shill and the members who provided gifts for our raffle. Your donations really do make a big difference and we appreciate your generosity. As for the golf ……… In A flight Al Ostberg put together a team of Scotty Brown, Glen Cantin, Jim Byers and John Shellenberger to claim 1st place with a 198 net. B flight saw the “Fitzgerald Clan” of Andrew, MW, Mark, Nick and Nicholas shoot a 198 edging out Team Conlisk buy a stroke for the victory. The Fitzgerald’s are making their mark in the B flight and raking in the points. Watch out for this group... Our C flight winners were Brian Ball, Dwayne Kirksey, Jack McCarthy, Eric Sasaki and Jim Coats carding a net 205. Who are these guys you ask? This early morning group gets way too many strokes but play before most of us are at the golf course to notice. Congrats to all who collected and Thanks for your participation. A complete list of top finishers is listed in this newsletter.
September Partner –Partner Our Partner -Partner is going to be played on September 15th and 16th and starting times are filling up quickly. If you are interested in playing in this tournament, please contact me as soon as possible with your team and your entry fee of $190 per team I have over 60 teams signed up with a limit of 80 so you can see we are about full. The format for the Partner-Partner will be as follows: Blue Tees both days Low Index or Assigned Index, whichever is lowest 1 Gross and 4 Net flights Saturday Front nine -2 Man Scramble Back nine – Cross-over Sunday Front nine – Partners Best Ball Back nine – Aggregate – “count them all” Ties – will be decided by 1) last day total score 2) last day back nine, last 6 hole total, last 3 hole total, hole number 18 if still tied. This is really a tournament about how you play as partners and can lead to some very interesting comments if you do not “manage your expectations” of each other. Good luck and have an enjoyable time.
October “Dreaded Orange Ball”- October13th Is it really time to talk about the Orange ball tournament? Wow. Do not miss this one if you have never played in the Dreaded Orange ball. The stories of this tournament would take way to long to tell; and believe me there are some great stories out there. Sign ups for this tournament will be at the September 11th General Meeting so get your 5 man team together and sign up early. Entry Fees will be $45 per player and $225 per team. In the Orange Ball, each player takes his turn using the Orange Ball for a hole and counting that score. Two other best Balls are scored as well. Remember to count all your strokes with the orange ball and play out the hole regardless of how many strokes it takes. There is the beauty of the “Dreaded Orange Ball”. Each team is responsible for determining their rotation or “batting order BEFORE you tee off on the first hole. Please give this some thought before you get to the first tee. It will make the sign in table go much smoother. See you at the golf course and please call me if you have any questions. Jerry Leininger August 2007 Treasurer's Report
Al
Ostberg Our August drive trip to Oak Quarry was very enjoyable. The date was August 25th. We had a 8:00 am shot gun which the guys really seemed to like. We had overcast skies for most of the day, which kept the temperature down in the 80’s overall. The scores were pretty low. “Team Drew” was the exception to the case. Mike Drew shot a gross 72 and his partner, Mike McMahon shot a net 65; of course they won the team game too. Look out for them in the Partner/Partner at El Dorado this month. Everything is posted in the usual spots and I will be passing out the results at our next meeting. The September weekender is in full force. I have the application on the website and it should explain everything. The dates are September 28, 29 and 30, 2007. The place is Singing Hills in San Diego. We have about 20 teams so far, but time is running out! Call me if you are interested or see me at the meeting. Our last trip of the year is in November. We are going to Menifee Lakes on November 10th. We are also having an 8:00 am shot gun. The cost is $85.00 and the format will be 3 Best Ball. I will take signups at the next meeting. Nick Zamora Well gentlemen, this will serve as my last article as the Commissioner. My Last meeting was short and sweet, so I really have no report!! I bet you like that. I just wanted to thank the membership, and the board of directors for all of the support you have given to me for the past 5 years. Mr. “Peanut Man” Don Marmion will do a great job as your commissioner. Again thanks and I will see you at the course. Ray McElhenney See the updated Handicap Information. Tom Retterath As I mentioned at the last meeting, it is
time for elections. In September we will announce the list of those persons who
have expressed an interest in running for one of the elected positions in the
Club (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director at Large). In
October we will take any additional nominations from the floor, and in November
we will vote. Bob Livingstone
