President's Corner

We got another tournament under our belts without any drastic weather. It was cool, or let’s say cold, for the early groups then warmed up as indicated by the scores from later groups.

Dennis had our groups going out close to on time but we still need to work on the pace of play for the later groups. One key thing to remember on pace of play is that it is your groups responsibility to keep up with the group IN FRONT OF YOU, not how far you are ahead of the group behind you.  If every group took just one minute less per hole, our problem would be solved. Every group working towards that goal is a small favor to ask from the Board.

Our April 1 Gross & 2 Net tournament always sends groups looking for that key gross player. It is always interesting to me to see what groups this format brings out. Check with Dennis Tramer to see if there are times available. This is always a fun format.

Long Beach Open raffle tickets will be available at the April 8th General meeting. Get your tickets for the raffle to play in the Pro- Am of the Long Beach Open. Three names will be drawn and you will be playing our course at its peak condition. The way things are progressing, Jerry will have El Do in great shape with quick greens.

Contact any Board Member for additional information or to purchase tickets.

May is just around the corner and that means our first big tournament of the year, the Member- Member. For new members, the Member –Member is a two day tournament with Partner’s Best Ball on Saturday and a 2 ball Aggregate on Sunday. Pick a partner early and sign up as this is one tournament you do not want to miss out on. I’m sure Dennis will have a few “wrinkles and twists” up his sleeve for this tournament.

Our Soboba Springs Away trip will be on May 31st, a week after Memorial Day. Contact Nick Zamora if you are interested in playing this fun course. Soboba always has been a popular trip and should fill up quickly. You may go to www.sobobaspringscc.com to get additional information on the great golf course. It will be hard not to have fun on this away trip.

That’s it for now.

Thanks for your participation in our club events.

Jerry Leininger
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held March 11, 2008 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided stuffed turkey, gravy, roll, salad bar with coffee or tea and a cookie for your nominal donation of $7. In the absence of our President Jerry Leininger, Past President Mike Montgomery called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. Mike advised the membership that Richard Dennison is back with us after having an open-heart surgery, and that he has a card on the front table for members to sign for his business partner and fellow member Toby Kovaleff who is undergoing open-heart as well

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville Steve Shure, Don Marmion, and Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone and Richard Dennison.

There were a couple of new members at tonight’s meeting. They introduced themselves and went with Richard Dennison for the new member tour.

Fred Gibson represented our life membership.

For general announcement nominations for Golf Commissioner will be made in April and we will vote in May. The elected will start the position in June. Criterion is one is a Long Beach resident, and they will file a Financial Disclosure report which will become public record.

Committee Reports:

Don Marmion – Commissioner: Don noted the course has been punched and sanded.

Mel Collins – Director: Mel is running the Putting contest and Quad Club this year. First place in the Putting contest was a tie between Mike Marmer and Alex Gay for $26. 2nd place was a 3-way tie between Tom Bentele, Todd Thiele, and Terry Henson for $6 each. Quad Club is April 26 at Lakewood cost is $35 per player. Mel will have a game on the side. 40 players are needed. The sign up list is in the hallway. Make it a point to get signed up as Mel has to submit the list to the Lakewood captain NLT April 12.

Terry Fulford – Director: Terry will be running the 9-hole tournament and GOM this year. In the 9-hole Tom Baker nailed 1st place and $40 with his net 32.5. 2nd place and $25 went to Terry Sweet with a 33 while 3rd place honors and $15 was claimed by Stan Brown with a 33.5. The format that GOM is being figured this year will be using 75% of your handicap. February Net winner was Cliff Aichele with a 68.5. Gross went to Mike Marmer with a 71. GOY tourney has been played. Net winners were 1st place to Ruben Gonzales (67, 87 – 20), 2nd Wayne McGhee (68, 76 – 8), and 3rd Wayne Neilson (72, 86 -14). The Gross winner was Jim Fuchs 73, 2nd went to Mike Marmer 76, and 3rd was claimed by Mel Collins, 77.

Bob Livingstone – Rules: Bob had nothing new to talk about. No questions were asked.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Nothing to report.

Tom Retterath – Handicap: Tom was not at tonight’s meeting.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Brookside results are posted in the usual places with special event winners. They had fast greens and a really nice course, too bad it rained. The next away trip is the SCGA on April 6. Greg O’Brien advised the course was closed to over-seed and punch the greens. It  will be nice priced at $80 / player. Lastly, “The Little Brown Jug” will be done. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners using your (4) best away scores. The Weekender provides (2) scores. Nick will be doing a special incentive raffle prize of $150 to be drawn from the names of players who provided their full deposit and attended the Weekender.

Bret Holloway – Special Events: This Sunday we’ll have circles; 5 and 15 for the “A”, 6 and 14 for “B”, and 7 and 16 for “C” flights.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: Sunday tournament is a 1-2-3 Waltz from the Blue tees posted as a non tournament score. The greens have been punched so use out Local rule if your ball is in a hole, nearest point, no closer to the hole. Member-Member will be $110 / player. Looking to see the attending membership’s take on the 4-Club tourney showing of hands show it was preferred over a partner Better Ball Blind draw.

Old Business: None

New Business: None

Meeting adjourned.

Mike Montgomery noted that we need a lot of participation on Cash Only Raffle. Tickets continued to be sold.  Jon Monat called out the numbers and happy winners came forth to get their stake.

The Membership drawing tonight was for $50. The number of Lector Orrick was drawn. Lector was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will be $60.

Well, the March Waltz proved to be a very competitive tournament as 33 of the 38 teams were within 7 shots of each other. I’d like to commend everybody on their speed of play as we were pretty much on time all day. In the gross, the old timers came through as Hunt, Holley, Burke, Powell, and Gay shot a nice 133 Gross to win in a CARD OFF.  They beat the kids, but not the normal ones , as tying them were C. Smith, M. Huntington, S. Vance, C. McCutcheon and  M. Pegan.  Every month we seem to have 1 team shoot lights out. This month someone shot 108, 8 shots better than the rest of field, and I was sure they made a mistake and only counted 1 ball per hole as it was R. McElhenny, W. Huntington, R. Sung, R. Marchiano and L. Lee. It must have been Lloyd Lee that did it because if you’ve ever seen McElhenney’s game, well you know what I mean. Well I guess I did it, the club is in full demise as Dave Young rejoined the club, welcome back D.O. Davey.

April 13th tournament will be a 1 gross 2 net format.  I will again have  1 gross and 4 net flights. Again we will have a separate BLIND DRAW flight for the teams with only 4 or less players.  There are no sign ups at the April meeting as for  the MEMBER-MEMBER TOURNAMENT you will fill out slips (they are in the pro shop on the window sill next to the computer) put them in an envelope and put in the drawer. Cost will be $110.00 per player.  I will not take anything by hand for this tournament. We will have a pairings party the Friday before the tournament.

Rules Chairman's Report

A little refresher on the lakes and streams at El Dorado.  We play all of the water at El Dorado as Lateral Water Hazards.  There are 5 options for a ball in a Lateral Water Hazard:  1)  Play the ball.  2)  Play a ball as nearly as possible from the spot from which the original ball was last played outside the hazard.  3)  Drop a ball behind the hazard keeping the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard between the player and the hole, with no limit as to how far back the ball may be dropped.  4)  Drop a ball within 2 club lengths of, but not nearer the hole than, the spot where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.  5)  Drop a ball within two club lengths of a spot on the opposite margin of the hazard, that is equidistant from the hole as the spot where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard....I will give some examples of this option at the meeting.  Options 1 thru 4 require a 1-shot penalty.

We also (although not always visible) offer optional ball drops on holes #7, #8 and #18.  On #7, the Ball Drop is directly behind the lake in the rough.  On #8, the Ball Drop is on the flat area about 20-25 yards behind the lake, such that the stupid, idiotic, obnoxious, inane, annoying Willow tree does not block the shot.  On #18, the Ball Drop is located behind the lake, at an angle that coincides with the margin of the lake.  These Ball Drops are primarily offered in case the player is not sure of where his ball last crossed the margin of the Hazard...they may be used in any Men's Club sponsored event even if they are not visible.  All of our Local Rules should be used during your casual rounds as well.

Rules Chairman & SCGA Delegate
