President's Corner

Our first big tournament of the year takes place this month on Saturday and Sunday; May 17th & 18th.  We will get the tournament started with our Parings Party on Friday the 16th. Make plans to stop by the course on Friday night and take part in the activities. I know the putting /chipping contest is always good for a few laughs. You do not need to be signed up for the tournament to participate and it would be good to see some new faces participating.

Monthly Tournaments - Our monthly tournaments continue to get a very good turn out and Dennis Tramer is doing his usual fine job in getting the field to finish in a respectable time. I continue to mention speed of play only because can always be approved upon. We seem to be getting slowed down in the 10- 11 am hour. I know the course will be getting tougher the closer we get to the L.B. Open so please try your best to catch up with the group in front of you if you fall behind.

Congratulations to Robert Creighton for his “Ace “on hole number 12 in our last tournament. Robert will clean out our Hole in One fund so we will be taking your $3.00 to start a new fund. Please see Rich Dennison to get signed up.

Handicaps –Tom Retterath and his committee have been working hard to see that our handicaps are in check and have made some recent adjustments. Please remember that the Board and Handicap Committee are trying their best to protect the field as to handicaps. If you find you have had your index changed by the Handicap Committee, you always have the right to appeal that action and present your case to the Committee. If you have any questions regarding Handicaps, please contact Tom.

See you at the May 13th General meeting.

Hit ‘em long and straight and take care of our golf course.

Jerry Leininger
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held April 8, 2008 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided beef brisket, boneless chicken breast, mashed potatoes, baked bean, rolls, salad bar with coffee or tea and a cookie for your nominal donation of $7. President Jerry Leininger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

The Minutes and Treasures report from the March Newsletter were accepted.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone and Richard Dennison.

Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our Life Member group.

Immediate Past President Richard Dennison addressed the membership informing them that we are now accepting nominations for our Golf Commissioner. Requirements are one must be a resident of Long Beach and in agreement with filing Financial Disclosure. Don Marmion is running to continue serving in the capacity.  Richard explained some of the job responsibilities and opened the floor to nominations. Terry Henson was nominated, he accepted. At next month’s meeting we’ll vote to determine if our next Commissioner will be Don or Terry.

Two (2) new members were at tonight’s meeting. They introduced themselves and went with Richard Dennison for the new member tour.

Committee Reports:

Don Marmion – Commissioner: Nothing to report.

Bob Livingstone – Rules and SCGA Representative; Bob discussed a sand bunker incident that caused Stewart Cink to be disqualified at a PGA event in New Orleans. Stewart hit out of one bunker and into another. His caddie raked the bunker from which he had just played. This act is subject to a 2-stroke penalty for testing the sand as he is still in a hazard of similar type. The USGA and Royal and Ancient Golf Club changed this Rule today to no longer be a penalty. This is an extreme exception as they normally do not make Rules changes outside of the standard 4-year revision. This change will be in the next version of The Rules of Golf.

Terry Fulford – Director, 9-Hole and GOM: 11 players in today’s 9-hole event. 3rd place and $10 went to Terry Henson for a 33.5 (36-2.5). 2nd place and $15 went to Dennis Tramer for his 33 (43-10). 1st place and $30 was won by Don Didier for his 32.5 (38 – 5.5). For March GOM there were several cards submitted this month. Bob Breen won the Net award with a nicely played round of 81 – 20 for a 61, which became a Net 66 using 75% of handicap. Gross players also submitted several cards. The winner of Gross was Terry Henson with a spectacular round of 67.

Mel Collins – Director: Quad Club is fast approaching. Tonight is the last night to sign up. If you want to play be sure to email or call Mel tonight. 3-point winners from last year automatically have a spot. Mel will determine the team by this weekend and post it in all the usual places. We need to win the trophy back. Tonight’s Putting contest used a new and different format where if your putt came up short it was a penalty. 3rd place was a tie between Terry Fulford and Terry Henson with +3, 2nd place went to Todd Thiele with +4. The winner was Doug Jones with +5.

Bob Livingstone – Rules: Bob had nothing new to talk about. No questions were asked.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Nothing to report.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: SCGA Cub was last Sunday. Somehow he let the field talk him into playing from the blue tees. There were 72 players and Nick is in the process of figuring the results. The Blue tees proved a bit tough for several players. Brad Wilcox’s team ran away with the tournament with an incredibly low score. In May we are going to Soboba Springs. It is a great course at $75, playing from the Blue tees in a 1-2-3 Waltz format. It is being played over the Memorial Day weekend with a 12:00 Noon starting time, 60 players. The official Rules to win the Little Brown Jug for 2008 are 1) Use the four best Net scores (the Weekender can give you (3) with Fri., Sat., and Sun.), and 2) Tie breaker will be determined from the most difficult course applying the SCGA Rules to break the tie. Heads up there will be a $150 raffle prize that will go to a member who pays full Weekender deposit and does go to the weekender. This year we are going to Doubletree in San Diego. This course used to be Carmel Highlands.

Tom Retterath – Handicap: As most everyone knows scores posted on the clubhouse computer have not been sent to SCGA for 45-days. They have installed new software. Now all of these scores will download to SCGA immediately. Tom also reminded new members and those who renewed late and were reinstated that their SCGA member cards are sent to him. See Tom to get your card.

Bret Holloway – Special Events: Bret was not present at tonight’s meeting.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: He has 40 teams for this Sunday with a couple of spaces for anyone that would like tom play. Member-Member applications are out. Normal Friday night Pairings Party with the buffet and all. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the event and have a great weekend. Tees will be Blue on Saturday and White on Sunday.

Old Business: None

New Business: None

Meeting adjourned.

The Membership drawing tonight was for $60. The number of Ricky Soutsos was drawn. Ricky was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will be $70.

Well, we got through another tournament with beautiful weather and no problems. Pace of play went along OK, but I think we can do better. One reminder, if you finish a hole and the tee is open go over and tee off while your team members finish putting. This speeds up play considerably. The 1 gross 2 net produced some fine scores, most noticed was the group of C. Martin, D. Spencer, J. Wong, D. McCain and B. Fegnolio shot a Nice 193 (23 under par) in “B” flight. They have been cashing quite a bit, so I think Ill sick Retterath on Martin and Fegnolio. I’m just glad I got my one and only par on 18, as because of that we snuck into 4th place. Complete results in the hallway and on our website.

Our biggie of the year the MEMBER-MEMBER is coming up May 17th & 18th. If you don’t know by now cost is $110.00 per player. As always, Saturday will be partner’s best ball and Sunday will be aggregate. We will be playing blue tee markers both days and tournament is played to your low index. Number of flights will be determined by how many entries I receive. Remember, the low team overall goes to the SCGA four ball tournament, and your team differential can only be 5 strokes to qualify. If the winner does not qualify we will go down the ladder until we hit one that does. The cutoff for entries is meeting night the 13th, although anybody signing up after May 8th will get late times both days, as I have to give back times on that date. On Friday May 16th we will have a pairings party in the BAR AREA. There will be hors d’oevres served from 5:30 to7:30 and the bar will be open until 8:00. Come early and participate in the partners chipping and putting contest put on by Directors Collins & Fulford. You’ll have a great time. Make sure you see Steve Shure as he will have something going on for your enjoyment. Hope to see you all there.

Our May away trip is the 31st, Saturday (Memorial Day is the 26th).  It will be a later Tee Time than usual, 12:00; so you won’t have to rush to the course.  Plan on a nice drive to Hemet and a quite day in the sun.  The game will be a 123 Waltz and the cost is $75.00 each.

Get ready because the very next week will be Green River.  The date is June 8th which is a Sunday.  We will have a shotgun at 9:00 am, so we can all get home early.  We will play the Riverside course and the format will be 3 Scores on the Par 4’s and 2 Scores on the Par 3’s & Par 5’s.  The cost is $75.00 each.

You can email me or see me at the club meeting to sign up.
