President's Corner

First off I would like to congratulate the newly elected Board of Directors for 2010 and welcome Rob Kuehn to the board. I know that our new president, Dennis Tramer will have a great group to work with this coming year. Please continue to show your support and participation.

It has been a pleasure to serve as your President for the last 2 years and appreciate the hard work and hours of time invested by our current Board, past Board members, Jason and the golf course staff, and the support of the general membership.  Your support of the Board and participation in our events is what makes this job so rewarding.  We have one of the most active clubs around and I thank you for your support .The past two years seemed to fly by and the experiences are something I will not forget. Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your President.

2009 is coming to an end with two of our bigger events: the December Raffle on the 8th and our Christmas tournament December 19th.

Terry Henson has a great selection of prizes available for the Raffle so plan on attending the General meeting, come early and buy your raffle tickets. This meeting usually is one of the largest of the year and we would like to see you attend.

December 19th is our annual Christmas Tournament and I know Dennis Tramer is putting the finishing touches on this big event. Please make sure to check in as early as you can. It makes the whole day start off much better if we are not rushing around trying to get members checked in and off to their assigned holes.

You will find additional information on the tournament in the newsletter.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I wish you and your families a very Happy Holiday season and Happy New Year.

Jerry Leininger
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting took place Tuesday November 10, 2009 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided a dinner selection of Mexican flare with salad, cookie, and coffee for your gracious donation of $7.

Vice President Dennis Tramer, presiding for absent President Jerry Leininger, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Immediate Past President, Richard Dennison, handed out ballots for the election of the 2010 Board of Directors. Richard, Mike Montgomery and Todd Thiele collecting the ballots, then removed themselves from the meeting area to tally the vote.

Past Presidents in attendance were Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone and Richard Dennison.

Bob Livingstone represented our Life Member group.

The Minutes and Treasures report from the Newsletter were accepted.

Committee Reports:

Al Ostberg – Handicap: Of the 150 players in last month’s tournament (5) did not post, (4) posted from the women’s blue tees, (4) posted scores higher than they carded, and (2) posted the round as a “T” score. Al has yet to penalize for this continuing non-conformance. If your handicap goes down due to a Penalty round, the reason will be your failure to post correctly. This meeting may be the last warning on responsibility to post correctly.

Bob Livingstone – SCGA Delegate: Bob informed the membership that four (4) of our members competed in the SCGA Sr. Championship, Steve Friend, Robert Forster, Mel Collins, and Jim Fuchs.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Las Vegas Weekender results posted in the usual places, and the participants paid. Our last away tourney will be November 11 at Sierra Lakes. The round will include one “count them all” hole on both the front and the back, 8:00 am Shotgun start. Little Brown Jug scores posted on board and on website. Kevin Orr leads by 2-strokes with a full field close behind. Nick is looking to go back to Vegas next year and is looking at some new courses.

Terry Henson – Special Events: We will have fun next Saturday with some new events. Good prizes tonight so be sure to buy raffle tickets.

Mel Collins – Director: The Match Play Flights tourney is down to the Championship rounds. Mel will be securing two (2) tee times and would like the players to participate together, times TBD.

Terry Fulford – Rules: Nothing to report.

Tom Retterath – Director: Gross Golfer of the Month for October was Doug Jones, 71. The Net winner went to our currently most improved player (handicap dropped from 5.5 to 3.5 in one month), Greg Lester with a 69.5.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Mike noted Team Play tryouts start December 5. Our monthly Newsletter will electronic only and not sent via US Mail starting January 1, 2010. Copies will be available in the Pro Shop for those without computer access.

Richard Dennison returned with the Election results. Your 2010 BOD will be as follows; President – Dennis Tramer, Vice President – Tom Retterath, Secretary – Rob Kuehn, Treasurer – Bret Holloway, Directors – Mel Collins and Terry Fulford. Rich secured the motion to have the ballots destroyed, motion carried and approved.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: Dennis noted that one (1) team got the DQ from the Orange Ball tournament. It was his team as Steve Liebeck put both Orange Balls into the lake on 18. Now for the bad stuff; There were (2) teams between 8:00 – 8:45 that were both two holes behind We have to start looking at penalizing for slow play  Several suggestions were made to help move play along however the Board is short staffed to provide the coverage to properly enforce it, volunteers were suggested. For the Christmas tournament, we have the course for the whole day. 7:30 shotgun start with Derbies afterwards. See Bret Holloway ($50), Tom Conlisk ($40) or Richard Dennison ($30) if you want in one of these. These do fill up fast so het your money paid ASAP. Dennis Tramer noted that if these all fill up and there is enough interest he will start another $40 Derby.

Dennis drew (15) member’ names and called them out for order to start the Christmas tournament signup.

Old Business: There was no Old Business to revisit tonight.

New Business: The Club will pay the $10 Special Events fee for all participants in the Christmas tournament.

Meeting adjourned.

Dennis called (15) names for the November tournament signup.

The Membership drawing tonight is for $80. The number of Rick Hanley was drawn; Rick was not at tonight’s meeting. The prize will increase to $90 for next month. We will draw numbers until we hit a winner.

I hope everyone had a good time playing in the “PIG NASSAU” Tournament. I would like to thank everyone on the speed of play as it was much better than October. We had some fine scores shot and a few who made quite a few points. In the “A” Flight we had a couple of players make 120 points each as NEW member Pingo Zamarripa shot a real nice Gross 67. He is one of Retterath’s new bandits. Also shooting a real nice gross 74, net 67, was Jay O’Brien. This was really hard to believe as I played with him for 3 years and I don’t believe he ever broke 80. In the “B” Flight the 120 point winners were Dave (WHERE AM I) Hasselman as he won the overall Gross with a 79 and the Front 9 net. It is reported that “Uncle Dave” after a few toddies in the bar was saying “BRING ON MY NEPHEWS” as he now thinks he is a gross player.  The other big winner was Danny Holley who won the overall net with a nice net 68 and also the back 9 net. I guess Danny finally started listening to the “BETTER” golfers in his group and played “SMART GOLF” as we know he is not this good.  And finally in “C” Flight, the two 120 point winners were with a Gross 84 John (THE BAGGER) Selby who also won the  Back 9 Gross. The overall net winner with a 66 was Bob Maney, who also won the Front 9 net. Bob was 1 shot off on the Back 9 or he  would have had the only complete PIG. Bob’s victory is still pending as I am checking with LIVY to see if  using oxygen and wearing a mask are an illegal aid. Nice shooting gentlemen. All results are posted on the internet and in the hallway on our board.

On  Saturday, December 19th, we will be having our “BIGGEST” Tournament of the year, our annual Christmas  extravaganza. As always this will be 3-man 2 Best Ball format. You will play from the Blue Tees at your LOW INDEX OR ASSIGNED INDEX whichever is lower. This will be a 7:30 SHOTGUN start and I mean 7:30 We will leave the clubhouse area at 7:20.  The cost for this Tournament is $70 to walk and $85 to ride. This includes a nice tee prize and also your special events of skins, circles and a bull's-eye, a $10 value. Make sure you are there no later than 7:00 and check in at the appropriate table in the BAR area. Check in will close at 7:10. Upon completion of your round you will deposit scorecards in the box which will be with Johnny “short pour” Tamney at the bar. In the morning when you get there if you want  little kicker in your coffee, come find me as I will have a bottle of BAILEY’S to top of your Java. Right now I have room for a single or a threesome. Please call if interested.

On meeting night December 8th,  Your new VP/TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN Tom Retterath will be taking  sign ups for Sunday, January 17th, SCRAMBLE. I will be along Tommy’s side, so be nice and don’t deluge him with stuff all at once like you guys like to do to me. COST $55. Make sure you are all there to sign up as there only about 33 times due to the amount of daylight.

I would like to thank the membership for their support for the last 2 years while I was Tournament Chairman.  It was a pleasure serving you and hopefully I did everything to your satisfaction. I will be accepting DRINKS at the meeting as after that I will again be NOBODY, only the President.

Dennis Tramer
VP & Tournament Chairman

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!  It seems like just yesterday I was saying that for 2009.  Time flies when you are having fun.

Our final away trip was played at Sierra Lakes in Fontana on November 14th.  The course was in perfect shape and we were treated very well by the staff.  We had an 8:00 am shotgun and finished just in time to see the USC game against Stanford (not good if you were a USC fan).  The guys seem to really enjoy the course and hospitality, so we plan on going back next year.  Check it out if you missed it, I promise you will not be disappointed.  All the results are posted and come see me about the points.

The race for “The Little Brown Jug” was finalized at Sierra Lakes also with the completion of the round on November 14th.   Through the away trip season players were given the chance to take their best 5 net scores and make the lowest number against the other players in the club.  There were a total of 10 rounds to choose from.  It came down to the last day, with Sebastian Sturdevant coming on strong to beat out Kevin Orr by two strokes.  Greg Lester pushed his way into third place with a strong showing in Las Vegas using all three scores there.  Jim Olivier and Terry Henson just missed the cut by a few strokes, but got a big “Thanks for Coming” from all the guys.

This is our second year of “The Little Brown Jug” series and I want to thank everyone for participating.  We had 47 players qualify this year.  And we had 5 people within 5 strokes of third place.  We will do this again next year so come out and challenge for the jug.

Well that’s it for this year I hope everyone enjoyed the different courses.  I look forward to serving you next year.   I have some familiar tracks with some new ones mixed in.  We start January 31, 2010 at Los Serranos.  This is Sunday one week before the Super Bowl game.  The price is $85.00 and the game is from the Blue Tees, will be 2 Best Ball on the even holes and 3 Best Ball on the odd holes.  Come see me at the table (or email me) and sign up as a single or was a whole team.

Have a Happy Holiday and remember “Thanks for coming”.

Association News

The SCGA is well underway with the conversion to the GHIN handicap System to take place January 4th  2010.

The current handicap system will be shut down from December 22 to January 4 and you will not be able to post your scores. This will include computers at golf courses and your home computers.

There are a couple of easy ways to make sure your scores get posted while the system is down:

  • I will have a “green sheet” in the pro shop for El Dorado Men’s Club members to post scores.
  • Save your scorecards and put them in the Men’s Club Drawer

Just because the computer will be shut off for awhile, you will need to post all those rounds.  Please contact any Board of Director if you are in question as to posting.

Also remember starting January you will receive a current and LI update twice a month.

The current issue of FORE magazine has an article under Handicap Hints that will bring you up to date on the GHIN system

Commissioner's Report

The Monthly meeting was called to order at Skylinks on Oct. 28th.  Superintendent Bob Livingstone advised the commission that our proposal to the city to re-instate free golf has been tabled and probably buried for City Council to approve. We tried.  Bob has also put together a new City of Long Beach golf website that should be up and running in a few weeks.  A lot more user friendly.

The reconstruction project at Rec-9 is about 90% completed and looking better all the time.  The Colorado Lagoon Project has started and hole #7 has been changed to a par 3 for just a few months.   El Dorado greens have been aerified and I would like to have input from the members how they feel about all of the greens being aerified at once or would they like to see one half of the greens done at one time and the other half say a month later as they now do at Rec Park and Skylinks.  The nesting has gone, so new tree trimming will start at all courses.  Rec
Park and El Dorado now have new superintendent on the jobs and the general managers are breaking them in gently on how perfect we the membership would like to see our courses kept.  Bob also submitted a will done job of updates from the last two years with the CIP money and where it has gone with a year end deficit of about $25.000, but new projects are scheduled for next year at all courses.  After months and months Bob was able to finally submit the conclusion of updating the Policy and Procedures part of the Golf Manual which was approved by the commission.  That’s enough for now, have a Happy Thanksgiving and give plenty of thanks for everything that we all are able to enjoy in these times.

Golf Commissioner
