President's Corner

May was highlighted with our Member- member tournament. Our scores overall seemed a little higher than last year but some teams never seem too much off the pace and came in with good scores. Thanks goes to Dennis Tramer who organized the tournament, Tom Retterath and Mel Collins for their “handy work” on Friday nights putting tournament, Bob Livingstone for the score board duties. I also want to thank Chris Martin who printed our score sheets and really added some nice touches to personalize the boards, thanks Chris they looked outstanding.

The June 13th  tournament kicks off our 2009 Club Championships and I will be closing sign ups at the general meeting on June 9th. There is a sign up sheet in the hallway and your entry fee needs to be put in an envelope and placed in the Men’s Club Drawer next to the posting computer. A reminder- If you are playing in the Championships in any flight, do not pay Dennis Tramer for the June tournament. Your entry fee in Club Championships INCLUDES your fees for the June tournament. The fees are $155 for a single flight or $190 for both Senior and Championship flights. The number of Net Flights will depend on the total number or entries. I will announce the Net flight breakdown at the general Meeting June 9th.

Look in the hallway and on the web site for tee times. I should have those posted the week of June 8th.

If you have any questions, please contact myself or any Board member. Good luck to all of you who will be participating.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of our Lifetime Member, Fred Gibson. Fred was one of the most active members I have seen and participated in our monthly meetings and tournaments until he was physically unable to attend. Fred gave a great deal of his time and energy to this club and he will be deeply missed. Our sincere condolences go to his wife and son, James who is also a Men’s Club Member.  Rest in peace Fred.

Jerry Leininger
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held May 12, 2009 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided beef entre as well as grilled chicken breast including the salad bar, coffee / tea and a cookie for fantastic bargain of $7.

President Jerry Leininger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, Bob Livingstone and Richard Dennison.

Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our Life Member group.

The Minutes and Treasures report from the Newsletter were accepted.

One new member introduced himself stating his name, age, occupation, and handicap and went with Rich Dennison on the introductory tour.

Don Marmion – Commissioner: Don had nothing new to report.

Bob Livingstone – SCGA Delegate: A historic moment for our Club took place at the SCGA Sr. Amateur. Both Mel Collins and Larry Grant shot rounds of 69. Congratulations guys. American Golf is to do some work on the bunkering that is in place to include shortening the length of the bunker on the left side in front of #4 green, the double bunker in front of #9 to be joined and shortened as well as lowering the lip, and possibly making the bunker left of #17 much smaller. The City is imposing a $1 surcharge for each round played. Lastly, the City attorney reviewed and interpreted the condition of City Manager and Golf Commissioners playing for free. As of 5:00 pm Monday May 12 free golf is no longer granted.

Committee Reports:

Al Ostberg – Handicap: SCGA data service is changing from IDC to GHIN January 1, 2010. If you already have a GHIN number let Al know. The posting screens on the computer have changed as evidenced by 26 golfers posted that they played from the Women’s Blue tees. These rounds uploaded the scores to that course rating of 77.9 at a slope of 139. This was found as Al audits every tournament round to ensure correctness. Be careful of what and how you post. It is each of our responsibility to be sure the score we post is correct, not assumed it correct as another told us it was. Al is officially informing the membership of this as in 2 or 3 months penalty rounds will be assessed for improper posting. Pres. Leininger noted that Dennis will have information on Sunday as to how to post the par 3 holes that we will play from temporary boxes.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Long Beach Open raffle tickets are being sold. Get here ½ hour early Saturday as we will be on time.

Terry Fulford – Rules: Terry had nothing to report.

Tom Retterath – Director: Had 23 players in the 9-hole tourney. Terry Fulford and Greg O’Brien tied for 3rd, Brian Ball took 2nd, and our champ today was Tim “Slammer” Yee. The April Gross GOM went to Al Ostberg with a 68 while Slammer Yee took Net with a 67.25

Terry Henson – Special Events: Members need to buy into the events and Sweeps for the entire weekend. Tonight, Friday night, and Saturday morning players can pay for the Member-Member. No money will be collected on Sunday. Be sure to pick up your winnings from the box as after 3-months those funds go into the Club’s general fund

Mel Collins – Director: Mel reported the Putting contest has prize fund of $118, 59 rounds. Tie for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th between Mike Vaughn, Dennis Tramer, and Terry Henson. Greg Englant pulled off the win. Quad Club victory was not in the cards for us this year. Noted that our Thursday Team Play team made the Finals at the SCGA Member course but lost in the playoff. Quad Club prizes will be available by this weekend

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: On Saturday May 30 we are going to Soboba Springs. Format will be 3-Best Balls on odd numbered holes and 2-Best Balls on the even numbered holes. Nick is taking sign ups now. The Weekender will be at Aliante north of Las Vegas. They have the hotel, casino, and golf course all in one place. Sign up sheets are available as well as on the website. A special Club Team event was held Vs Skylinks at Santa Anita. El Dorado won by 43 strokes. Nick is going to look into getting this course for an away tourney next year.

Al Ostberg – Handicap Chairman: Al advised new members that their SCGA membership cards are sent to him their first year of EDPMC membership. At this time he has the cards for 25 new members. If you are one of these members be sure to pick your card up from Al or from the tournament table from any BOD member. Unfortunately several members are still not paying any attention to the what they need to do following a round. From the last tournament there were 18 people who did not post, and 12 who posted the event as a “Tournament” round. We only us Tournament, or “T” rounds for special events / tournaments. Read the sheet at the tournament table as well as the rules printed on the back of the scorecard to know if to post as a “T” or “regular” score. Al also emphasized the importance to post your exact adjusted score. Do not rely on Joe Schmucatelli’s math who said you shot an 84 when in actuality you shot an 82. Each member is responsible to post the correct score. Our computer tabulates the score you should have posted and that is what Al uses audit the posting report. Pres. Leininger noted that “T” scores stay in your window for 24-months, and we follow USGA recommendations to only major tournaments as “T” scores.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: We’ll have the Pairings party Friday night starting around 6:00 pm and lasting until around 7:30. The will be a bar set up but it is buy your own. Between 6:00 – 7:00 Dennis and Steve Shure to have a special event players can get in to. June tournament will be Partner Best Ball, Blind Draw that will run in conjunction with the Club Championship. We will play as our normal f5-some and partners randomly drawn. Schedule to be posted on the website.

Old Business: None.

Pres. Leininger advised that he Roger Scaife Award is being reviewed and will be on next month’s meeting agenda.

New Business: For the Club Championship, to participate in the Sr. Club Championship you must be 55 or older. Price this year is $155 for the 3-rounds which includes the Monthly tournament. Sr. players can go “pig” to play in both Championships for an additional $35. Put you entry fee in an envelope available in the Pro Shop. Mark what you are signing up for on the envelope. Handicap will be from you LI. Dates are June 13, 14, and 20.

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Dennis Tramer called the first 10 names for June tournament sign up. Cash awards in the raffle were pleasantly received.

The Membership drawing tonight is for $50. The number of Robert N. Thurston was drawn. Robert was not at tonight’s meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $60.

The Member-Member Tournament was a fun time for all. We had 2 great days of weather and mediocre golf played. Like I’ve said before, we are a bad club as only 13 teams out of 67 broke par NET! All you guys that didn't play passed up an opportunity for some easy money. Our lowest net score in the Tournament was a 204 by the team of Steve Liebeck and Scotty Brown. Scotty led the way with a nice 78 as a 10 on Sunday. I’m sure these two will represent our club well in the SCGA 4 ball Tournament. The 3 lowest nets for race points were the fore mentioned group, then at 205 Henigsman-Wold and at 209 a tie between B. Johnson-G. McIsaac &T. Retterath-D. Kelley. You’re winners were “A” gross at 216 S. Friend-B. Forster “A” net  at 209 T. Retterath-D. Kelley-----“B” gross at 229 S. Liebeck-Scotty Brown “B” net at 209 B. Johnson-G. McIsaac------“C” gross at 253 J. Leininger-R. Gonzales “C” net at 205 B. Henigsman-R. Wold.   Congradulations Gentleman. All results are posted on our website and in the hallway on our board at the club.

On June13th we are trying a new format that I believe is very enjoyable. It is a Blind Draw Partner Best Ball. Everyone will play with there group and record their individual score. I will then Blind Draw each player a partner and figure out their Best Ball score. We have played this as a Friday format on Weekend trips and it has always be popular. All you guys that don’t CASH very often have a great opportunity for some points as you could draw Russell or Braswell. It has occurred numerous times where a player shoots 100 and ends up winning mucho points. I hope everyone enjoys this and please give me your input after the tournament to see if we want to do this again next year. I HAVE PLENTY OF SPOTS AVAILABLE IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO PLAY.

On meeting night June 9th I will be taking signups for the Red-White Blue Tournament on Saturday July, 18th. This year we will go straight RED-WHITE-BLUE. We will score as follows (4) balls on the RED holes (3) balls on the WHITE holes and (2) balls on the BLUE holes. Everyone come out and enjoy a fun day of golf with your buddies. THANK YOU

Dennis Tramer
Tournament Chairman

We played a little friendly game with Skylinks on May 9th at Santa Anita Golf Course.  The format was 14 of our guys against 14 of their guys in an all net, winner take all.  And like the tournament director wrote in the Skylinks Newsletter, “It was a massacre”.  We beat them by 43 strokes.  We really liked the course and we hope to make it one of our away trips next year.  Thanks to everyone who came out and played.

Our May away trip was to Soboba Springs in San Jacinto.  The date was Saturday, May 30th.  If you haven’t heard Soboba is a great course and clubhouse.  I would have to say for the money, it is the #1 course we play all year.  They are having a nationwide tour event on September 25th to October 5th for the next four years there, so the place is really stepping up to make everything perfect.  You must check it out sometime.  There is even a casino about 5 miles down the road that is supposed to be really nice.  Our own Tim Yee and Don Marmion can vouch for that.  The results will be posted on the web and in the hallway.

Our next away trip will be at Red Hawk Golf Course in Temecula.  The date is Saturday, July 11th with a shotgun start of 8:00 am.  The cost is $75 each and the format will be 3 Best Balls on the Par 5’s and 2 Best Balls on the Par 3’s and 4’s.

Finally, the quest for Las Vegas has begun.  Our weekender this year is set for October 9th -11th at Aliante Casino and Golf Resort in North Las Vegas.  Check it out on the web.  I am putting an application on our website with all the information you need.  I will need a $100 deposit for each person to secure a space for the great weekend of fun and golf.  Let’s do this.

SCGA Delegate's Report

WITH SADNESS

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Honorary Life Member Fred Gibson on May 27th.  Fred was one of the very few men who has been a  member since the Club was first formed in 1962.  Fred served two years on the Club's Board of Directors, taking on the Handicap Chairman duties in 1973 and 1974.

Fred was a fixture at meetings and tournaments until very, very recently, and was a likeable and friendly member of the Club.  We offer our condolences to his family, particularly his son and fellow Club member, Jim.
