President's Corner

I hope you have all dried out a little from our February weather. The golf course got some much needed rain and should be in very good shape for the spring events.  Let’s see if it makes any difference in our scores.

I want to start off by wishing both our Thursday and Saturday SCGA Team play teams good luck in the playoffs. It is a great accomplishment to get both our teams in the playoffs – Good Luck and we know you will represent El Dorado Men’s Club very well.

This month we will start our 9 hole tournament and the putting contest before our March 10th meeting. Please remember to pay your entry fee for the 9 hole in the pro shop before you tee off and you must play with at least one other Men’s Club member for your score to be counted.  You may play 18 holes that day but only the front nine score will be used for the tournament. Tom Retterath will be in charge of the 9 hole tournament and feel free to contact him if you have any additional questions

Mel Collins will be running the putting contest this year and I ‘m sure there will be some surprises in store for us.  There is always at least one hole that Mel sets up to challenge us.

During the February tournament, I heard that a few groups got their starting times mixed up. Please help Dennis Tramer and show up 45 minutes before your starting time. Dennis has last minute cancelations and has to move groups up from time to time. If you checked in early, there will be no issues. Come 15 minutes before a time given at the General Meeting and you may have to be passed up. Times given out at the General Meeting do change a little so use them as a guideline. No one likes to be rushed to the first tee so please check in as early as possible.

One additional reason to show up early is to make sure we do not have the starter plug the general public in the middle of our times. If there is a gap or no shows, they will fill the golf course.

The Quad Club Tournament this year will be on April 25th at El Dorado. If you are interested in playing, sign up in the hallway. We need 40 players of all handicaps to participate. Contact Mel Collins or any Director if you are interested in this fun day. We will play teams from Recreation Park, Skylinks and Lakewood and plan on taking the trophy back from Lakewood.

Jerry Leininger
President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held February 10, 2009 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided the always delicious dinner selection that included the salad bar, coffee / tea and a cookie for your generous donation of $7.

President Jerry Leininger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone, and Richard Dennison.

The Minutes and Treasures report from the Newsletter were accepted.

Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson represented our Life Member group.

Pres. Leininger advised that long time Club member Tom McCutcheon has move to Missouri and will be missed.

Several new members were at the meeting tonight. Rich Dennison took them on the introductory tour.

Don Marmion – Commissioner: Don stated the Commissioner meeting information is printed in the Newsletter. If you have any questions make sure you get them to him.

Team Play; Thursday Co-captain, Mel Collins noted the team locked up a playoff spot in starting the season 4-0 but are now 4-1. Saturday Captain, Paul Wildy noted they are 5-0 finishing the season here on Saturday hoping to go 6-0 and possibly catching a bye.

Committee Reports:

Al Ostberg – Handicap: Al was not present tonight. No one had any questions.

Terry Fulford – Rules: Terry just reiterated the need to play by the Rules and to count all of your strokes. Question of what is one to do if you run over your own ball with your cart was asked. Terry replied “2-stokes”. Bob Livingstone interject that it is a 1-stroke penalty requiring you to place the ball in a similar spot as close to possible to where it was. If you don’t replace it that close it’s another stroke penalty. Terry claimed he had already figured they had placed it improperly.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We played Los Serranos in the eye of the storm, but we got through all 18 holes. We say the real definition of a “worm burner” as they were doing rooster tails off the back of the ball when putting as the greens were covered with garden worms. The tournament results are posted in the hallway and on the website. General Old March 1, Cost $60. April 5 we’re going to SCGA, cost $85. Our tourneys are held on Sunday during Team Play season. Weekender will be to Las Vegas and Nick is looking for a lot of players to sign up.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Mike had nothing to report.

Tom Retterath – Director: Very few cards for January GOM. Gross winner was Mike “Spanky” Hasselman with a 71. Net winner on a card-off was Rich Gilmore 74 – 6.75 – 67.25. 9-Hole tourney starts next meeting night as DLS will be in effect. Tom is working times with the Pro Shop for the 2008 Golfer Of the Year tourney, likely to be played March 7.

Mel Collins – Director: Mel is setting up the Quad Club that will be held here. Sign up to be posted in the hallway. $50 per player includes prizes. The Putting contest will start before next month’s meeting.

Terry Henson – Special Events: Terry is going to mix it up this Sunday. Be ready.

Bob Livingstone – SCGA Representative; Bob discussed the suggestion of Jon Monat to start a Sportsmanship award for Team Play in honor of Roger Scaife. The Board of Directors has formed a committee and is in the process of review. Bob noted that the only past member that anything has ever been named was Pat Harris. Pat was a great representative of the game of golf, on par with the likes of Arnold Palmer.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: Dennis hopes everyone enjoyed the Scramble. Hopefully our Select Drive goes well this Sunday as the weatherman has forecast rain. If we get rained out monies paid for this will be rolled over to March. If this won’t work for you and a refund is needed give Dennis a call. By all means do not assume the course is closed, as it very well may be cart paths only. March format will be a Waltz. With the wet ground Dennis changed the required drives from 3 to 2. Handicap will be posed as 75%. Format will be taking (2) on par 5, (3) on par 4, and (4) on par 3 holes. Tees on all of the par 3 holes will be set back. Dennis called out 15 names for the March signup.

President Leininger noted that on Sunday the only persons that can call the tournament off would be Jason Koh and the Superintendant of the course. You are financially responsible for your scheduled tee time.

Old Business: None.

New Business: None.

Meeting adjourned.

Raffle tickets continued to be sold. These monetary bones were well received.

The Membership drawing tonight is for $60. The number of Peter Barton was drawn. Peter was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $70.

Well, we dodged another rainout and ended up with a beautiful day of golf. Let’s hope are LUCK keeps on for the next 2 months. The scores in the Select Drive seemed a little higher this year, probably due to wet conditions. The “A” Flight gross winners with a score of 199 were D. Tramer-Mel Collins-K. Orr-D. Jones-J. Wong. I’m just glad those 4 guys could help me out once in awhile or we would have come in last. All the net winners were fairly close in their scores, but taking the honor of lowest net was the “B” Flight winners at 181 was S. Faris-G. Scott-Dr. G. Lee-Dr. Darryl Lee-L. Lee. Times must be tough for the DR’s as even Dr. Dennis Clark cashed. All results are posted on the internet and in the hallway on our board.

Coming up on Sunday, March 15th, is our 1-2-3 Waltz. This is a pretty simple one to figure out, so if anyone has any questions call me. We have a very full field for this one, as we have around 41 teams, the largest field in over a year. We will have to be very conscious about SPEED OF PLAY as our last time is around 1:00. The times sheet should be on the internet before meeting night. I NEED SINGLES, IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY PLEASE CALL ME.

At the March meeting I will be taking signups for the 1 Gross 2 Net Tournament which is on Sunday, April 19th. Look for the MEMBER-MEMBER sign up slips in the April newsletter and they will also be in the Pro Shop by the computer. This tournament is on May 15th & 16th and the cost will be $115.00 per player.  Thank You.

Our first road trip this year was to Los Serranos in Chino Hills on February 8, 2009.  With rain in the forecast for the whole weekend it wasn’t looking good for us to play but as usual, the golf gods gave us a break and we only got dumped on a few holes on the back nine.  We even had some sunshine at the end, so we got that going for us.  Everything worked out OK in the end and I have posted all the results.  Come see me if you haven’t received your winnings.  I have also posted the first round of the “Little Brown Jug” tournament.  I will try to post the standings every month so you can see what’s happening.

The March trip is to General OLD in Riverside.  The date is March 1st.  So you are too late if you wanted to play.  All the results will be posted by meeting time.  Come see me.

The April trip is to the SCGA course in Murrieta.   The date is April 5th, Sunday beginning at 8:30.  The cost is $80.00 and the format is 123 Waltz from the white tees.  So you have plenty of time to sign-up.

Remember you can sign up as a single, twosome, threesome or full foursome.  You can reach me online or call me or see me at the meeting.

SCGA Delegate's Report

REMEMBERING PAT HARRIS

As mentioned at the February General Meeting, beginning this year, the Club's regular monthly tournament each March will be called The Pat Harris St. Patrick's Day Tournament.  While some members of the Club never had the privilege of knowing Pat -- who was often referred to as "The Club Standard" for the regularity with which funny or bizarre events would be compared to what Pat did or likely would have done in the same situation -- those of us who knew him, consider him a true icon of the Club and of the game.

I have known people at every level of the game, and with the possible exception of Arnold Palmer, I have never known any other person who genuinely loved the game for itself, more than Pat did.  The classic Pat story retells the time he was on the first tee at El Dorado, ready to begin his round when a voice came over the PA saying "Mr. Harris, please report to the golf shop immediately".  Pat went in and came rushing back to the tee with his new "Power Pod" driver, which was "guaranteed not to slice".  Pat had been waiting for this weapon, which was sure to not only add distance to his drives, but reduce strokes from his score.  As he pegged his Top Flite and wielded the awkward club he pronounced that it "was guaranteed not to slice" right before he winged his ball directly right into the driving range.

Anyway...those of us who knew him want to make sure that his legend never dies, so every year we will celebrate him and his bithday (yep, St. Patrick's Day) during our March tournament.  I will be having buttons made with Pat's picture and the words "I knew Pat...just ask me" for those who knew him to wear.  If you didn't know him, ask someone with a button to tell you their Favorite Pat Story...you can't make this stuff up, folks...you will wish you had known him, and hopefully after a few years of this tournament, you will feel like you did!
