President's Corner

April was a very busy month for the Men’s Club highlighted with our Thursday Team Play Team making it all the way to the finals on April 17th. After a very hard fought and tight group of matches, we tired Alta Vista 24 to 24 and were forced into a playoff. Alta Vista won the Championship on the first playoff hole to claim the title. It was a very draining day both physically and emotionally but we were represented by a great group of individuals that really played as a team and gentlemen.

I am very very proud of the way we were represented by this team. There are just too many members who dedicated themselves all year long and had great years to mention everyone but I do want to thank Captain Glenn Cantin and Co Captain  Mel Collin for the time and dedication they gave to this years team. It was a year we will never forget and I’m sure we all will be anxious to play for the “big plate’  again.  Please contact any board member if you would like more information on Thursday or Saturday Team play for next year.

Our next big event of the season is just around the corner – The Member- Member on May 16th an 17th.

Dennis Tramer is putting the final touches on this years’ Member- Member.  And I’m sure there a few tricks up his sleeve for the Friday night activities. Please come to our General Meeting on the 12th to hear all about the tournament.

Club Championship – June 13, 14, and 20th

This years Club Championship is going to be played a little different than in the past years.

In an effort to play the course in it’s best condition, we want to play this year before the LB Open and have picked June as the month.

The first round will be a tournament within a tournament.

Players who sigh up for the Club Championship will participate in the June 13th General Tournament as their first round and also have  a chance to cash in the Club’s Blind Draw using that days score.

You will play with other contestants within your flight just as in the past. The remaining two rounds will be played like we have done before within flights

The flights will be as follows

Championship – LI of 8.5 or lower

Senior Net Championship – 55 years of age or older

Net Flights- Number of flights will be determined by sign ups.

The entry fee will be $155 and will include the Club Championship and the June Blind Draw tournament.

A sign up form will be in this newsletter and will also be posted  in the hall way the week of May 4th. Please make sure to put your payment in a white envelope, make it which flight, and put into the men’s Club Drawer in the Pro shop.

President

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held April 14, 2009 in the El Dorado Park Golf Course tent area. The restaurant provided grilled chicken breast and/or beef with gravy including the salad bar, coffee / tea and a cookie for fantastic bargain of $7.

President Jerry Leininger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone and Richard Dennison.

Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our Life Member group.

The Minutes and Treasures report from the Newsletter were accepted.

Two new members introduced themselves with name, age, occupation, and handicap and went with Rich Dennison on the introductory tour.

Don Marmion – Commissioner: Discussed increases the City of Long Beach is imposing on LB courses. Rec Park will be affected more than the other three. The surcharge we will have to pay will be at least $1. Let’s hope it is not more. Tee boxes for 3, 9, and 12 will possibly be closed for this weekends’ tournament due to sod placement. The new key machine for range balls is in place. LB Golf Festival starts May 13. Jr. Golf tourney is scheduled for June 6.

Committee Reports:

Al Ostberg – Handicap: SCGA data service is changing from IDC to GHIN January 1, 2010. If you already have a GHIN number let Al know. The posting screens on the computer have changed as evidenced by 26 golfers posted that they played from the Women’s Blue tees. These rounds uploaded the scores to that course rating of 77.9 at a slope of 139. This was found as Al audits every tournament round to ensure correctness. Be careful of what and how you post. It is each of our responsibility to be sure the score we post is correct, not assumed it correct as another told us it was. Al is officially informing the membership of this as in 2 or 3 months penalty rounds will be assessed for improper posting. Pres. Leininger noted that Dennis will have information on Sunday as to how to post the par 3 holes that we will play from temporary boxes.

Terry Fulford – Rules: 2009 USGA Rules books are available under the computer. Pick one up for your bag.

Mike Montgomery – Communications: Nothing to report.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick thanked Mike Vaughn for helping him make the SCGA tourney a success as he was out of town. On May 30 we are going to Soboba Springs. $85 + $5 with format of (2) on par 3 and (3) on par 4 and 5 holes. This is the start of Saturday tournaments.

Tom Retterath – Director: March GOMs were lightly contested. Gross winner was Bill Hasselman with a 3-under 69. Net winner was Wayne Neilson with a 67. Jason Koh is providing us $15 rate to support the 9-hole tourney. 27 players participated. Prizes of $75, $40, and $20 went to the top three.  The winners were John “JD” Davis (32), Tim Braswell (32 ½), and Ed Lane (33).

Bob Livingstone took the microphone to inform the membership that the Thursday team will be playing the Finals this Friday at the SCGA Member course. The team has shown great camaraderie sportsmanship, team spirit and represented us well. Tee times are from 12:30 – 1:40. The course has agreed to allow galleries to follow and support the team.

Mel Collins – Director: Mel expressed his thanks to the membership for their support all year. Good turnout for the Putting contest. These guys are so good it resulted in a 3 or 4 way tie for 1st place. Quad Club is being put together. Mel then called the Thursday team to the front for group picture. Our opponent Friday is Alta Vista.

Pres. Leininger made it known that Dennis Tramer, Ruben Gonzales, Bill Alberth, and Kevin Orr have been members of the 3 teams El Dorado has sent to Team Play Finals; (2) Saturday teams, and this Thursday team.

Dennis Tramer – Tournaments: Sunday’s tourney format is 1-Gross and 2-Net and Dennis still has some openings. See him if you want to play. This tourney will be a Net tourney, no Gross prize fund. Member-Member will be $115 / player, signups are in process. Instead of food everyone will get a sleeve of Pro V1 balls and a $6 range card. June tourney will be the 1st day of the Club Championship. You will play your normal teams but format will be partner blind draw, better ball.

Terry Henson – Special Events: Terry was not at tonight’s meeting.

Old Business: None.

New Business: Skylinks has challenged us to a 20-man team event Vs them at Santa Anita. Cost would be $54 / player. Get your name to Jerry if you would like to participate.

Meeting adjourned.

The Membership drawing tonight is for $80. The number of Jorge Lopez was drawn. Jorge was at the meeting, but our Treasurer was not. Jorge will get receive an $80 for his lucky number. Next month the prize will go back to $50, increasing $10 each month until it is won again or given away at the December meeting.

I want to start this newsletter off with some disappointment. We were doing  very well on speed of play until this tournament. Our last group was around 45 minutes late meaning they didn’t tee off until close to 1:00. Keep in mind that these gentlemen get here 45 minutes early of their tee time and tee off 45minutes  late they are here 1.5 hours waiting to play golf. Please be considerate and keep up with the group ahead of you, especially you early groups. The 1 Gross 2 Net scores were unusually high this year. Our team played terrible and got 2nd in “B” Flight and I didn’t think we would be close to cashing. Surprisingly, the low score in the tournament was in “A” Flight as those Fun Loving Old Geezers of Hunt-Gay-Burke-Powell & Holley shot a whopping 26 under 190 to win by 12 shots.  They were led by Danny’s nice 78-14 for a net 64. You’re “B” Flight winners were Henson-Yeakel-Standish-Brokoff & Barton with a nice 196 and “C” Flight winners were Johnson-Green-Gonzales-Sawaya & Lane at 204. I would also like to point out another couple of fine scores as Stan Olslewski and Lowell Overturf both shot  net 65. All results are posted on the internet and in the hallway at the golf course.

On May 16th &  17th is one of our major tournaments, the MEMBER-MEMBER. This will be played at L.I. or assigned index, whichever is lower. We will play Saturday Best Ball from around the Blue Plates. On Sunday, this is a count em all aggregate which will be played from around the white plates. You will use your Blue tee handicap for both days. On another note, ALL special events will be collected by Terry Henson on Saturday ONLY.  Another reminder, On Friday night May 15th, starting around  6:00 we will have a pairings party either in the bar or the tent. I will announce this at the meeting. There will be hors d'oeuvres, a chipping and putting partner contest run by Tom Retterath & Mel Collins and a special event by Mr. Steve Shure and myself. I encourage everyone to attend as we have a great time. I still have plenty of spots available and you can find sign up sheets on our website or in the pro shop by the computer. Final day to sign up Meeting Night May 12th.

On meeting night May 12th, I will be taking sign ups for the Saturday, June 13th Partner Best Ball Blind Draw. For this tournament you will sign up your normal fivesome. Go out and play your own ball and if you wish play a game within your group. I will then match your score with your blind partners score and figure out what you shot Best Ball. There will be NO gross payouts in this format. The points payouts should be very high for this tournament. Many times in this format you can play terrible and draw a guy (like Russell) and find out you win. This tournament runs in conjunction with the 1st round of the Club Championships. ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE PLAYING IN ONE OF THOSE EVENTS WILL NOT PAY ME FOR THIS TOURNAMENT AS IT WILL BE INCLUDED  IN THAT FEE. I hope we get a good turnout for this event, as I think this is a great format.

Our April trip to SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta on April 5th was a big hit.  Thanks to Mike Vaughn for running the day for me because I was out of town for the Easter holiday.  Everything is posted and if I owe you any points come see me.

Our May trip is to Soboba Spring in San Jacinto.  The date is Saturday, May 30th beginning at 8:30 am.  The format will be 3 Best Ball scores on the odd holes and 2 Best Ball scores on the even holes.  The cost is $85 per person.  The cost includes golf, range balls and golf cart.  They have put millions of dollars in the course as well as a new club house, so if you haven’t played there yet, you are in for a nice treat.  I will take sign-ups at meeting night or email me.

Finally, El Dorado was asked to participate in a friendly team event with Skylinks at Santa Anita Golf Course on May 9th.  The tee time will begin at 10:00 am.  The cost will be $65 including the prize fund.  I will be calling you with tee times.

Thanks and see you on the course.

Director's Report

The 2009 Quad Club Tournament is in the record books. The home team, El Dorado, didn't set any records and didn't win either, finishing 3rd, but we did put on a good tournament.
Tom Retterath did a lot of work, he coordinated everything, thanks Tom. Chris Martin did a professional job on the score sheets, the other clubs were very impressed, fine job Chris. Livy did his usual good work recording results. Thanks to all the Board Members for their help, I couldn't have done it without all the help.
We had some fine play, these are the 3 point winners, Randy Wold net "66" low man, John Wong 70 net, George DeBlois net 71, Corey Smith, Mike Hasselman and Tim Braswell.  Eric Miller shot a net 71, good for 2 1/2 points.
Final Standings;  Lakewood 70, Rec Park 69, El Dorado 54 1/2, Skylinks 46 1/2.
Winners will be awarded points at the May 12 General Meeting night.

This is my final update on Thursday Team, El Dorado lost to Alta Vista C.C. in the Championship match, we tied 24 to 24 and lost in a playoff.
This was a very rewarding year our club fielded a team of great guys. I got to watch these guys grow into unit that competed, won and represented our Club in fine fashion.
This Team enjoyed every minute of this exciting year.
Thanks Team, I'm glad I was part of this Juggernaut.
