Well, Tom ran another great tournament as the
Partner Blind Draw went off without a hitch. This is a fun tournament as
you never know if you will cash even if you play poorly. Ask Tom
“Kingfish” Conlisk as he shot something like 92 and won 85 points. He
always seems to find a way to win. I heard we had some early groups 2
holes behind, please keep up if you have an earlier time as this ruins
the whole day. Our next outing is Saturday July 17th which is
the
RED-WHITE-BLUE
tournament. This is always a lot of fun as you can play from some tees
you never play. I am sure Tom has spots available if you would like to
play, so give him a call.
We had our annual Club Championships on June 19th,
26th & 27th. I was a fairly light turnout as we
had 13 players in each flight. Once again we had rules violations that
resulted in 6 DQ’S. We had 1 card where the player signed for a wrong
score. We had 6 players play 4 hol.es from the wrong tees, and my
favorite we had a player who signed a card where the scorekeeper put
down a 43 for hole 17 and 89 for hole 18. He signed the card!!!! He was
not DQ’ED because his score was HIGHER, but his score for the day was
201. Even my wife who came by in the morning asked me what are these
sheets, I told her the rules, she said NOBODY picked one up!! End of
story. My congratulations to the winners CLUB CHAMPION STEVE MENA

Meeting Minutes
|
The El Dorado Park Men’s Club General Meeting was held on Tuesday, June
8, 2010 in the Big White Tent. The meeting was called to order at
7:00pm by President Dennis Tramer, who led the Pledge of Allegiance to
the (invisible) flag. [Note: Because the Laker/Celtic game was on, the
meeting seemed to move along at an unusually rapid pace]. Oh – and the
pre-dinner meal was the (now standard) Mexican Feast. Past Presidents
in attendance included Don Marmion, Steve Shure, Greg O’Brien, Mike
Montgomery, Jerry Leininger, Dick Scoville, Richard Dennison and (Life
Member) Bob Livingstone. The overall mood was significantly lightened
due to the free keg of beer provided courtesy of Bob Livingstone and his
recent hole-in-one. There were approximately 80 members present.
New member Douglas Miller introduced himself and was given the “New
Member’s Tour” by Jerry Leininger.
Committee Reports:
-
Don Marmion (Golf Rep): Our new carts are due in this week.
-
Mike Montgomery – No Report
-
Terry Henson (Special Events) – Will have circles and skins, and net par
on all odd holes, at the June Tournament.
-
Mike Vaughn (Rules): Encouraged everyone to go to the SCGA website and
take the Rules Quiz
-
Rich Dennison (Handicaps): From now on, the Club will post all
Tournament results – individuals will NOT post. Currently, for Away
Trips, players will still post themselves.
-
Nick Zamora (Entertainment) – Our last Away Trip to Red Hawk was an
awesome experience – a great course at a great rate (see Nick’s report).
Next event is 7/31 at Rio Hondo – 9am start - $85 – format is
3-2-2 waltz. Start to plan for the
weekender this fall at Aliante in
North Las Vegas
– cost will be =$300 for golf and rooms.
Terry Fulford: The Member/Member seems to bring out the best in us –
there were 14 GOM Cards turned in. Gross winner was Larry Grant with a
66 (after bogey on 1 & 2). Net winner was Pat O’Hara with 66.25. At
the 9 Hole Tournament today, Cary Thomason shot a net 29 to run away
with it.
Mel Collins: Match play sign-ups are underway – see Mel. At the Putting
Contest today, we changed the format: 3 points for an Ace, and -1 point
if you’re short. Beating out a three way tie for second (Tod Thiele,
Eric Miller and Henry DeGraffe) was Larry Grant.
President Tramer discussed sign-ups for the Club Championship (it starts
at the June Tournament). You need an L.I. of 6.6 or less.
Tournament Chairman/VP Tom Retterath: Gave a recap of the Member/Member,
with special thanks to Steve Shure for his help. Winners were Andy
Robinson and Pat O’Hara. There are openings for the June Tournament.
July 17th Tournament will be Red, White and Blue (6 Holes
each) for 5 man teams.
There was no Old Business.
New Business: It was agreed that spitting sunflower seeds on the green
is rude, unhealthy and (most importantly) hard on your putting. So
don’t do it!
The $80 monthly drawing winner was Dennis Courtemarche, who wasn’t
present. Next month it goes to $85. The $75 “Draw Till You Win” winner
was Pat O'Hara (nice night, huh Pat?)
The meeting was adjourned at
8:00pm. |

Well we had a great day for golf for our Partner
Blind Draw tournament. We had just over 150 players participate in the
event. We still need to continue to make a more concerted effort to
playing more quickly as a club. All team scores were very competitive
in the 4 flights. In the A Flight we had a cardoff with Team scores of
61 by Earl Malit/Dale Green and Darryl Lee/Mel Collins with the
Malit/Green taking the cardoff to get 1st place. In the B Flight with a
score of 61 was Jim Ferrara/John Davis. In the C Flight with a score of
63 was Tom Conlisk/Justin McCullough. In the D Flight with a score of
61 was Dwight Summers/Terry Sweet. An interesting team was Steve
Giroux/Dave Hasselman who each turned in a net 68 which was the 3rd best
individual scores of the day, but the team could only net to a 63 which
got them a T-5th place in A-Flight – No ham’n’egg for that team!! Also,
this was the first tournament where we used the GHIN
TPP software to automatically post all tournament participants scores
and this went very smoothly.
Our next tournament is the July Red-White-Blue
tournament. We will play 6 holes each from the Red, White, and Blue
Tees. The course yardage will be very close to the White yardage so the
software will automatically post each player’s scores using the White
Tee Ratings/Slope. I do have some open spots so if you want to play,
please let me know asap.
At the General Meeting Night (7/13) I will NOT be
taking tournament signups for the August 14th BBQ/Raffle tournament
since this is a mail-in tournament. I’ve placed entry forms in the Pro
Shop and the form should be on the website too. The cost for this will
be $70 (walk) or $85 (ride). I will take signups until August 10th
unless the tournament fills up before that date. Reminder, this
tournament is a SHOTGUN start at
6:30am.
Following play we will be in the TENT for the raffle. |

Our June away trip
took us to beautiful Red Hawk Golf Course in Temecula. We had a shot
gun start of 9:30 am and had wonderful weather. My special format of 3
Net Scores on the 5’s and 2 Net Scores on the 3’s and 4’s didn’t seem to
stop “Team Braswell” with Kerry Bryan, Jim McCullough and Mike Collins.
They were 14 under par. Good job boys. Single gross were Jerry Warner
at 74 and Tom Braun at 76. Single net winners were Kerry Bryan at 67
and Jim Olivier at 70. Come see me with all the results and payouts.
Our July away trip
is to Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey. The date is Saturday, July 31st
with tee times beginning at 8:30 am. The format is 322 Waltz. The cost
will be $80.00 each which includes a golf cart, prize fund and closest
to the pins. Another game of skins is $5.00 each for gross and net. I
will be at the table on meeting night to take sign-ups.
Speaking of
sign-ups, I am starting to push hard on the weekender set for October 8,
9 & 10, 2010. The flyer is on the website and I will have copies at
the meeting. It is a great trip and the prices are very affordable.
Any questions you
can email me or see me at the course or at the meeting.
So until next time… |

During our June Blind Draw tournament I was the marker for our group’s
monthly card as well as for two competitors’ card for the 1st
day of the Club Championship. The group card was on top with the CC
cards underneath. Scores were transferred to the CC cards after
verifying and recording the scores onto the group card.
Upon completion of our round the scores were tabulated on the group card
and confirmed by all. Instead of tabulating the C cards by adding the
numbers across the back 9 total was placed, adding the font for the
total. I signed the cards and had the competitors attest. Unfortunately
the score for one hole was mismarked as a lower score on a CC card.
Per The Rules of Golf, Rule 6-6 b, if a player returns a score for any
hole lower than actually taken he is disqualified. “Haste makes waste”
fully applies here. Be sure to take your time to ensure all score card
are 100% correct before submitting as “official”.

Commissioner's Report

A recommendation has
been sent to the City Council that the Municipal Code be changed to
reduce the number of members from thirteen to seven, to change the
categories of membership on the Commission, and to properly reflect the
duties of the Commission. Of these seven, at least four would be Long
Beach residents holding membership in at least one of the recognized
golf clubs, and three would be designated At Large. These changes were
approved by Phil Hester, Director of Parks, and Robert Livingstone,
Superintendent of Golf Operations and discussed with the commission and
approved and sent to the council.
Len Kennett
submitted three nominees for induction to the Hall of Fame-Bob Chafee,
James Oh and Ted Richards New golf carts have arrived at both Rec
Park and El Dorado and new GPS systems that are updated and work rather well. The LBGF Open
tournament will be held the end of the month. Any one wishing to
volunteer their time can contact Bob or Kathy their office. No meeting
in July. Have a nice summer. See you at the course. |
