President's Corner

In March, we finally go back to playing “real golf”. After cashing in the first 2 tournaments my team is probably history as we cannot play our own ball and win. March 14th will be the waltz and I believe it is pretty much filled up. Look for Terry Henson to have some extra special events since we were limited the first 2 tournaments. Nicky has a couple of away trips coming up at San Juan Hills (March 21) and the SCGA course in Murrieta (April 5th) so be sure to sign up as these are a lot of fun. Nick will also shortly have the prices out for the Aliante golf Weekend October 8-10. This is a great deal and the Aliante Hotel and golf course are absolutely fabulous. Team Play is still in progress and Thursday needs to beat Costa Mesa at El Dorado and they will be in the playoffs. Saturday must win at Industry Hills and at Brookside to have a shot at the playoffs. Good Luck to both teams. Look for Tom at the March 9th meeting as he will taking signups for the April 25th 1 gross 2 net tournament. One last note, remember at the conclusion of every meeting we will have a drawing for $75 cash. You must be present to win and we will draw until we get a winner!!! Remember, don’t hit 'em short and crooked like I do on the links.

President

Meeting Minutes

The February monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 under the chilly (but at least not wet) El Dorado Park Golf Course tent. The dinner provided by the restaurant featured some good looking Chicken Cordon Bleu and grilled vegetables. President Dennis Tramer called the meeting to order at 7:03 PM and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Past Presidents in attendance included Richard Dennison, Steve Shure, Jerry Leininger, Mike Montgomery, Bob Livingstone, Greg O’Brien, Tom Conlisk (who scheduled the next tournament on Valentine’s Day?), and Richard Scoville. Life Members were represented by Bob Livingstone. The Minutes and Treasurer’s Report from the previous month were unanimously approved. No new members were present – must have been the rain that kept them away.

Committee Reports were as follow:

Golf Committee – Don Marmion – no report.

SCGA – Jerry Leininger – no report.

Thursday Team Play – Mel Collins – Team won our first two matches, and is looking good. The Quad Club begins April 24 at Skylinks. Cost is $50, and we’re limited to the first 40 players to sign up. So, sign up soon!

Saturday Team Play – Mike Montgomery – not doing quite as well as the Thursday Team. We lost Saturday to Los Verdes. We play them again next Saturday at El Dorado.

At Large Director – Terry Fulford – GOM for January was Steve Shure (Net) 66.75, while Gross GOM was Eddie Fernandez with a 72. Congratulations to both. The pre-meeting 9-hole and putting tournaments will start in April.

Rules – Mike Vaughn – no report.

Entertainment – Nick Zamora – Our away trip to Los Serranos was held January 31, and 57 players participated. Somehow we avoided the rain. Gross winner was Pingo Zamarripa (72) and net winner was Nick Zamora (very suspicious, you think?) with a 69. Our next away trip is February 28 at Pala Mesa – take plenty of golf balls – with an 8 AM Shotgun Start. Cost is $70, and special rates are available at the hotel for those wishing to spend the night. The March trip will be to San Juan Hills on the 21st – a 9 AM Shotgun Start – and will be $85.

Handicap – Richard Dennison – Nick’s getting a letter.

Tournament Chairman – Tom Retterath – Our February Tournament on the 14th is Select Drive – minimum 3 tee shots per player. We’ll count 4 scores on the par 3 holes, 3 scores on the par 4 holes, and 2 scores on the par 5 holes. The March Tournament will be a 2-3-4 waltz.

Special Events – Terry Henson – We’ll have a Bull’s Eye on 17 – and circles for each flight on 3 and 9. No skins this month because of Select Drive. Next month there will be a $5 buy-in for Low Gross and Low Net Per Flight.

There was no old business and no new business. The drawing winners were:

Monthly drawing – Tom Burns, not present. The pot goes to $60 next month.

$75 “Draw until we have a winner present” – went to Art Sais.

President Tramer adjourned the meeting at 7:24 (may have been a record for the shortest meeting of the century – it actually took me longer than that to write up the minutes).

Tournament Chairman

Well the February Select Drive tournament is behind us.  We lost a few guys late due to Valentines Day but we still had a good turnout.  Scores were low again this month and each flight had many close team scores.

Our next tournament will be the March 2-3-4 Waltz to be held on Sunday, 3/14. I’m assuming the format is fairly self explanatory.  If you have any questions, please contact me.  NOTE:  TOURNAMENT DAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS.  SO THE CLOCKS WILL BE SET FORWARD 1 HOUR DURING THE NIGHT SO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TEAM IS AWARE OF THE TIME CHANGE.  YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE $55 ENTRY FEE AND NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN IF YOU ARRIVE LATE – NO EXCEPTIONS!!!  It looks like we’ll have about 41 groups so each group has to be aware of their pace of play!  We will again utilize the Continuous Putting rule for this tournament.  I will probably have some spots open for singles so please contact me ASAP if you want to play.

At the General Meeting Night (3/9) I’ll be taking signups for the August 25th 1 Gross / 2 Net tournament.  Also, our annual Member-Member tournament will be held in May and the mail-in signup slip form will be in the April newsletter and also will be in the Pro Shop.

It is just amazing how lucky a group of men can be with all this rain we’ve been getting on the weekends.  We have been able to play both of our away tournaments.  Our last one was Sunday, February 28th to Pala Mesa in Fallbrook.  A group of us went out Saturday because Team Play was rained out.  Although we weren’t able to play golf, the resort was very nice to us, the bar / restaurant was excellent.  Sunday we woke up to beautiful sunny skies and the course was in perfect shape.  We had a 8:00am shotgun and 48 players.  We played a 123 Waltz and finished just in time to see the USA / Canada hockey final.  What a perfect day!  All the results are posted, so come see me for your winnings.

Our March tournament will be Sunday, the 21st.  It will be a shotgun start at 9:00am.  The course is San Juan Hills in Capistrano.  The format will be 2 Scores on the Par 3’s and 3 Scores on the Par 4’s & 5’s.  This should be fun.  The cost is $85.  This is almost a home game for us because is it just a short trip up the freeway.

So come one, come all; email me or see me at the table to sign-up.

Commissioner's Report

Meeting was called to order at Skylinks Golf Course, Feb 24,2010.  Superintendent Livingstone gave his monthly golf operations report for January with all courses showing a deficit from the number of rounds played compared to last year.  Not good, down about 17% overall.  Little Rec had its Grand re-opening on Feb. 5th. Everybody was quite please on how all the upgrades turned out.
After all the rains in the area, all courses were reportedly coming back from all the of the rainfall.   Aerification schedule is due to start in March and finish up in April.  American Golf has made another adjustment to the Computer Tee Time format, so be patient.
El Dorado will be getting plaques installed in the breezeway recognizing the past winners in all the events of the Long Beach Golf Festival and don't forget for those who want to participate in those event, it is just around the corner and information can be obtained on the Long Beach Golf website.
The Little Linksters Program is scheduled for July12-16th  and 19-23rd. Applications will be released  on April 1st, with registration fee at $85.00, first come first serve basis.
My term as Commissioner expires this year in July.  Any one having interest in representing the  El Dorado Men's Club can contact myself or any Board Director about requirements. I believe the election date is May/June.
