2014 Newsletters

Well, after 2 years as Tournament Chairman I am ready to start a new endeavor as President of the El Dorado Men's Club. As the new President I would like to welcome back all returning board members and also a new director Jim Ridenour ( Mr. Entertainment ) for the 2014 season.

Myself and the new Board of Director's are eager to get going to provide you with another great and exciting year of golf. We get started in January with the "Scramble" on the 19th, an away trip to Rec. Park and it will also kick off Thursday and Saturday Team Play. New schedule are by the computer and will be available at the meeting on the 14th, are weekender this year is at Pala Mesa on October 3rd-5th.

I'm sure that Nick Zamora is setting up the Scramble Jan. 19th. Anybody wishing to play should contact Nick as I am sure he will have holes to fill.

DECEMBER 2013 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included salad, chicken marsala, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Past President Rich Dennison, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 125 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Jerry Leininger, Dennis Tramer and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.
The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.
New Members: There were no new members present.
Director's Reports were as follow:
Jerry Leininger: We will play from the Blue Tees this Tournament using your current L.I. Post your own score as a Tournament Score.
Cliff Aichele: This month's Shotgun Tournament will feature two Closest to the Pin holes (by Flight), Skins (by Flight), and Beat the Pro. Enter everything for a mere $10.
Dennis Tramer: Our first Away Tournament for 2014 will be Rec Park on Sunday, January 26. Jim Ridenour will take over as Entertainment Chairman for next year. (Jim's got some pretty big shoes to fill, Dennis did a very nice job this past year).

Mark Ziegenhagen: Thursday Team Play has completed all their practice rounds and the roster is set. Teams in our bracket include Rancho Park, Antelope Valley and Sierra La Verne.

Nick Zamora: Golfers of the Month for November were: Gross Vern Followell "70" and Net Rob Kuehn (Hooray!!) "66". Saturday Team Play try-outs were held this past Saturday (in the rain) with two more practice rounds scheduled, with a final tune-up "Bragging Rights" match scheduled for January 11 against the Thursday Team. The first match is January 18. Teams in our bracket include Rancho Park, Brookside and Santa Anita.

Mike Vaughn: Winners of our Annual Match Play Competition were: Director's Flight: Scott Dietschak; Treasurer's Flight: Mike Callahan; Secretary's Flight: Jerry Johnson; V.P. Flight: Cliff Aichele; and President's Flight: Mike Marmer. A great big "Thank You" to Mike for another fine job running the competition.

Terry Fulford: The November "Superintendent's Revenge" was a lot of fun, enjoyed by everyone (except Livy). The December Tournament is a 7:30 Shotgun Start & is just about full. Terry then introduced the Board members for 2014.
There was no Old or New Business.

The winner of the $50 Drawing was Don Pichovich.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:27pm, followed by the ever-popular (and raucous) Christmas Raffle.

2013 was a fun year. 13 always has been a lucky number for me. I appreciate the members who teamed together to bring the Quad Club trophy home, those who competed in the Flight championships, as well as the players who competed in the Putting Contest help before the general meeting. Let us make this another good year!

Trophies and other awards were presented at the December meeting. The winners received a crystal trophy plus 200 bones. The runner-ups pocketed 120, and the longest lasting "also ran" each took 50. The Winner, Runner-up, and also-rans of each Flight were as follows, respectively. President: Mike Marmer, Rubin Diaz, Dave Rubin and Tom Retterath. Vice President: Cliff Aichele, Justin Vander Broek, John Wong and Corey Smith. Secretary: Jerry Johnson, Colin Boylan, Sebastian Sturdevant and Tim Hodge. Treasurer: Scott Dietschak, Jim Baber, Greg O'Brien and David Green. Director: Mike V. Callahan, Prisciliano Lucero, Ruben Gonzales and Jerry Hodge.

If a 2014 Quad Club is held it will be hosted by Skylinks as they are next in the rotation. Quad Club is normally help in April. Chances are there may be a change in the format as well as size of the teams. Players who won 3-points for us in 2013 have a roster spot guaranteed for the 2014 event. Updates on this will follow.

Once Daylight Savings Time returns the Putting Tournament will be held on the south green. This is always a good game with a format variation from the month to month. It will run from 5:15 and 6:45. Payout will only reward players for their best score, nothing in multiples. Be sure to get to El Dorado early those nights to take your chances at rolling in the best score.

The first matches of this year's Flight Championships can be played starting August 1 with all matches complete NLT August 31, with each round being playable between the first and last day of the respective month. Handicap used for each match will be your active 6-month LI. Rules of Competition for this event will be posted on the bulletin board as well as on our website before any play commences so everyone has the same access to this information. Entry will be the standard $20 per player. However it must be pre-paid before you will be placed on a roster. This is due to the completed brackets must be made available to all players NLT July 31. If your money has not been received by July 20 don't come crying to me if you don't find your name on a bracket.

If ever there is a time you would like to discuss a Club issue I am available.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year. For 2014, I will be assuming Golfer of the Month (GOM) duties for the very capable (and new Vice President) Nick Zamora. Please remember: when submitting your scorecards for GOM, include your name, date of the round and SCGA number. If your are submitting for NET GOM, please utilize your LOW INDEX for calculating your net score.

Team play kicks off this month, and the Thursday Team looks to make a return to the playoffs after a brief hiatus. It will be a tough climb, as we are in a challenging bracket which includes Rancho Park, Sierra LaVerne, and Antelope Valley. The season unofficially starts on 1/11, as we give the Saturday Team their annual golf lesson (and retain our bragging rights). First league match will be January 16th at Eldo versus Rancho Park.

Best wishes to all of the El Dorado members for a prosperous 2014.

HAPPY NEW YEAR GENTLEMEN I hope everyone got just what they wanted for Christmas and are now ready to use all that technology for the upcoming tournament on SUNDAY January 19, 2014. It is our famous 5 man Scramble. We had a great pre Christmas sign up and have only room for some single and double spots so come see me and I will do my best to get you in. The format for this scramble uses a minimum of 3 drives per player and there is a modified handicap allocation. It goes like this so pay attention:
0-3 get 0, 4-6 get .5,7-9 get 1, 10-12 get 1.5, 13-15 get 2, 16-18 get 2.5 19-21 get 3, 22-24 get 3.5 and 25 and over get 4.

Remember boys that this is my first of many home tournaments I will be running so be nice and help me out by playing fast so we can get everyone finished before dark.

Happy New Year to all! Hope your holidays included some relaxation and a little golf. We had unbelievable weather that's for sure and that's why we're all so lucky to live here.

The Christmas Shotgun was a "blast", no pun intended. There were 3 eagles to win skins and 2 of them were on par 4s. Bill Hasselman canned one on Hole #1 from a 100 yards or so, and Michael Callahan flew one in on hole #5. It's always nice to hit what you're aiming at and to win a little in the process. Richard Hasselman took all of the closest to the pin winnings on #12. He was the only C-Flight player to get his tee shot on the green. Way to go Richard!

We might have to make a section in the blue box just to accommodate the Hasselman clan. I stuffed the blue box with a ton of envelopes so once again make sure and check for one with your name on it, meeting night or during the upcoming tournament. I'm looking forward to another fun year, full of special events and some great golf.

Happy New Year. I hope this year will be full of health, wealth and happiness for all of us. I would like to thank Dennis Tramer for the great job he did last year and for his tutelage trying to help me understand how this works and making the transition easier.

Our first tournament of the year is Recreation Park on Sunday, January 26th. I'm afraid we are almost full. We had enough room for 56 golfers, but so many wanted to play, we were able to secure more times, but those are full now, too. I do have room for some singles. Please contact me if you have an interest.

Our next away trip will be Sunday, March 2nd at Los Serranos (South). Cost will be $80. It should be a lot of fun at one of everyone's favorite courses. I will take sign ups at the February meeting or you can go through the website and email me.

We have another away trip on Sunday, March 30th. It's at Rio Hondo, which should be a lot of fun. Did someone say Orange Ball?

January 2014 Handicap Newsletter

Happy New Year to everyone. I want to quickly review some of the Handicap policies for the Men's Club as we start the New Year. This is not only for the benefit for our new members but as a reminder for returning members as well.

A recap of our posting scores for the Christmas Tournament showed me that we need to improve our posting. There were 18 players who did not post and 36 who did not post as a T score. I was very generous and changed all the scores and DID NOT ASSIGN ANY P SCORES; Merry Christmas

Posting Your Scores

Please make sure to post all of your scores using the Equitable Stroke Control; the ESC reduces high scores based on your course handicap. The ESC is posted near the computer and in the hallway for your reference. If the round we play as a monthly tournament is not to be posted, you will be notified. This would include our January Scramble and February Select Drive events.

There are at least 3 ways for you to post your scores, at the golf course computer, on the internet / SCGA Website, or you can contact me and I will post for you.

The Handicap Committee will notify you one time if you did not post one of our tournament rounds or an away trip. After the first warning, if you fail to post again we will post your score for you with a P or Penalty Score. A P score is posting your lowest score in you scoring record, regardless of the score for that round. YOU HAVE NOW BEEN NOTIFIED GOING INTO 2014.

Please take a few extra minutes and remember to post your score and we will avoid posting any P rounds to your file.

The USGA Handicap system will only work to its potential if we all are following the same set of rules and guidelines.

Well, I am ready to start my new position as Rules Chairman, and I know nothing about the rules of golf like 95% of all golfers out there. I will try to "brush up" on the rules as the year goes on and throw you some tidbits along the way. If anything serious comes up I have the "RULES GURU MR. LIVY" on speed dial.

Here is a little tidbit--- A player is disqualified for one of the following:
(A) He starts the round with non-conforming club in his bag.
(B) He starts the round with 20 clubs in his bag.
(C) He damages a club on a practice swing changing the loft and then precedes to hit that club for his next stroke.
(D) He adds "anti-slice" salve to the face of a club, then makes a stroke with that club.

The answer can be found under rule 4-2b and I will give it at the meeting.

Notes: Of this balance, $790 is "Hole In One Insurance". The remainder, less $100 to maintain the Odd Year checking account will be carried forward and the exact amount will be disclosed in the January 2014 Treasurer's Report. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

A total of $5,005.00 was added to the Christmas Tournament. Of this, $1,700.00 was for hats and range balls, and $3,305 was added to the Prize Fund.

Well we had our first two tournaments in January and the weather was fantastic for both. Nick had a large field for the Scramble and did a great job with his first tournament. Our new board member Jim Ridenour also did a great job with his first tournament at Rec. Park with 180 players, one of our largest away trip in a long time.

In February we only one event: The Select Drive. Please try to get Nick your signup information and entry fees as early as possible. It just makes their job a little more easier when they get this information early rather than later. Let's try to get this tournament filled up so we have lots of good competition.

Team play is underway and both teams are doing well. If you get a chance to come out support either Saturday or Thursday team when they are home, I am sure they would appreciate it. These guys all are giving us their best efforts.

Reminder, each club member must have played in 3 club events within the past 12 months for our Member/Member, Club Championship, and Christmas tournaments. Everyone might as well participate in our tournaments early in the year so you don't have to worry about "qualifying" for these "Special tournaments"!!!!

Your 2014 Board is working very hard to continue to make ElDo the best golf club here in SoCal. We have some good things planned for 2014, so please stay tuned!

JANUARY 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included chicken fajitas, sausage and peppers, grilled veggies, salad, rolls and dessert.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 100 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Jerry Leininger, Richard Scoville, Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.
New Members: There were approximately 20 New Members present. They introduced themselves, and were taught the secret handshake by Past President Tom Retterath.

Director's Reports were as follow:
Jerry Leininger: For the January and February Tournaments do not post a score, as they are Scramble and Select Drive formats. Starting in March, if you do not accurately post your score, you will be assessed a penalty.

Cliff Aichele: Special Events for January will be CTP on all Par 3's. Check the box for your winnings.

Dennis Tramer: If you are in the tree well of the new trees on #10, 17 & 18, take a free drop away from the tree. A rules issue: do not put any foreign substances on your club.

Jim Ridenour: We have a full house for our first "Away Tournament" January 26th at Rec Park. Times are posted on the Web Site. Next Away Tournament will be March 2nd at Los Serranos South. Price is $80, which includes a cart.

Mike Moraitis: Golfers of the Month for December were: Net "65" Matt Munkelt and Gross "76" Wayne Mc Ghee. In a practice round, Saturday Team Play edged out Thursday Team Play. Team Play starts for real this week.

Nick Zamora: This month's Tournament is full, with a waiting list. We have starting times from 6:30 to noon, so play quickly. Glad to see all the New Members who are here tonight. Saturday Team Play wiped out Thursday Team Play in a practice round (Note the different takes on that match from the opposing Team Captains).

Mike Vaughn: Quad Club will only be 25 players from each course this year.

There was no Old Business. Under New Business, concern was expressed over the condition of the new Tee Box on #17. Livy will check with Marc Lilleberg, the Course Superintendent.

The winner of the $50 Drawing was Larry Bartley.

Hey guys, are you ready for a fun filled 2014? I hope so because it is 8.25% over already.

As you know The City of Long Beach and American Golf want the Quad Club to go away. Bob Livingstone has championed the campaign to continue this annual inter-club competition on either a Saturday or Sunday in late April. Player count would be reduced from 40 per team to probably 20 to 25. We would play at Resident rate with carts not being mandatory. The first group starting time would be between 8:30 & 9:00. The format would be a Modified Stableford or another that would not require putting out. (i.e. Club Side games would not be allowed if they required being putting out). The Sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board for you to place your name NLT meeting night. All players who scored 3-points at home last year have first dibs on a team spot. Players who win 3-points this year will have a roster spot guaranteed for the 2015 Quad Club at Recreation Park.

Daylight Saving Time provides the return of the Putting Tournament held before the meeting on the south putting green. It will run from 5:15 and 6:45.

Flight Championships rounds start August 1. Player entry fee will remain at $20. Signup sheets to be posted in May, NLT the first part of June. More on that when the time gets closer.

The final installment of Golfer of the Month (2013 edition) is in, and the winners are Wayne McGhee (76 GROSS) and Matt Munkelt (65 NET)... Nice work, guys.

All of the 2013 Golfer of the Month winners are now elible to compete in our Golfer of the Year tournament, slated for Sunday March 15th. We will be crowning one NET and one GROSS Golfer of the Year... all of those elibilbe for the tournament are listed on the website under "Golfer of the Month 2013." I will be contacting all of these players - please let me know if you plan on playing.

Thursday Team Play has gotten off to a solid start, with Home wins against Rancho Park (30-18) and Sierra LaVerne (27-21). We narrowly missed stealing one at Rancho Park, as they pulled off some 18th hole heroics to edge us 25-23. Next up is Sierra LaVerne at their place... Let's get 'em, boys!

Lastly, monthly 9-hole tournaments will begin again after Daylight Saving Time kicks in. Looks like the first 9-hole of the year will be March 11...

Welcome back Boys for another month of great golf. We started the year with a general meeting we have not seen in 20 years. The tent was full and the energy was high. We had a line out the door for all the new members to meet and greet. It reminded me of the old days in the restaurant. It just goes to show how strong our club is and how hard we work to keep you guys happy and being the best club in town.

Last month was The Scramble and we had 180 players which was 20 more than last year. A very good showing for the first event of the year. The weather was a little cold but nice and sunny which was a lot better than the frost we had a year ago. Gross in Flight 1 was Team JVB at 59. Net was Team Gonzo at 55. Flight 2 Gross Team Kerry (again) at 62. Net was Russell's Army at 53. Flight 3 Gross was Shaun Ferguson at 60 which is a great score for a bunch of hacks. Net was the Bartley family with a crazy 48-1/2. All the results are posted on the web site and in the hallway at the course.

The February event is Sunday the 16th. We will start at 6:15 this time to fit everyone in. We call it The Select Drive. This is a five man team playing 3 best ball. We will use 75% of your handicap. You have to use 3 drivers per player. Once the drive is selected, each player will place their ball within a foot of the selected spot and play his ball from there until you putt out. This is not a postable round. So you can't go GOM Braz... We will have 3 flights again. Email me with questions or sign ups. You can also sign up at the meeting or leave an envelope in the pro shop in our men's club box. You can also mail money to me at 2116 South Yale Street, Santa Ana, 92704.

Our General meeting will be February 11th, I will be taking sign ups for March 16th, Pat Harris, St Patrick's Day Waltz. This is a 5 man 234 Waltz. The price is $55 each before the event day. The day of the tournament the price goes up to $60.

Finally a word about Saturday team play. We started away at Rancho Park in Los Angeles on Jan 18th. Rancho used to be home to the LA Open in the 60's and 70's and where Arnold Palmer made 12 on the 18. Nobody on our team made 12 and we took it to them and won 32-16. The following week we played them home and won 36-12. On February 1st, we played Brookshire from Pasadena at ELDO. We didn't finish too strong and ended tied 24-24. I personally missed a 4' putt on 18 that would have won the match. Hopefully we all learned on that day to play hard and never give up. We next play Brookside away on Feb 8th and hope to take care of business and bring a win back to ELDO. I do want to thank all the members that have supported us all year. It means a lot to know the club is behind us. We play for ELDO. Thats all for now.

Special Events kicked off the New Year with a nice range in payouts from 18 points on the low end, all the way to 119 points on the high end. We only had "Closest To The Pin" on the par 3s and some guys hit it close. Two shots inside 3 feet and two shots inside 1 foot, that's close.
Because we had so many new members sign up this month and to start off the New Year, I have included the club winnings policy on collecting script and points collection below. If anyone has questions, please contact me or any of the other board members for clarity. The complete SOP for the club is available on the web site. My goal is to always make sure players receive the winnings due to them and try to do whatever I can to accommodate this.

The Special Events Chairman is the keeper of winnings for all events until claimed by the winning Member. Once winnings (from any event or tournament) have been prepared by American Golf or the Special Events Chairman, the Special Events Chairman verifies that they are accurate. The Special Events Chairman is charged with keeping unclaimed winnings at all Club events available to be claimed by winners. If winnings are unclaimed 60 days after the date of the next General Meeting after the tournament, they are turned back to the Club and become part of the General Fund. The mechanics of this process includes unclaimed winnings being used to purchase things from the Golf Shop for the December Meeting Raffle or to augment the Christmas Tournament prize fund.

Boy, we had a great time at Recreation Park. It's amazing how a golf course with no water hazards and plays so short, can play so tough. We did have some golfers that did really well. Greg Andersen, 8 handicap, esteemed member of Thursday team, and member of Tom's Mafia, carded a 73. "Always in the Money" should be the name of team Reagan, Lipman, Jaeke, and Brewster, who won the tournament in a card off.

I will be taking signups for Los Serranos South. Play begins at 8:00 am on March 2nd. Make sure and sign up. Remember, Rec Park filled up quickly.

Again, I would like to thank Fish for the help. Without him I would still be trying to figure out the scoring. Fish also has another important job as the Rules Chairman, and doing a good job (does anyone know Livy's phone number?). Actually, Dennis is always ready to help.

Boy time is flying by, it seems like yesterday I was trying to figure out what to do for the Christmas tournament tee prizes. Here we are 3 months later. Thanks to all the members, we have had great participation in the 1st two tournaments of the year, hopefully we can keep it up for the remainder of the year. In March we Finally go back to "real golf", we have a 2,3,4, Waltz or Nick could reverse it and have a 4,3,2.

Team Play has completed the regular season matches. Unfortunately the Thursday team was eliminated from the playoffs but they were very close to winning their division. The Saturday team needs some help to win their division and are now waiting to see who wins between Santa Anita and Brookside. If Santa Anita wins we go to the playoffs starting in a couple of weeks. Good luck to the Saturday team! I'd like to thank both Captains of our teams, Mark Ziegenhagen (Thursday) and Nick Zamora (Saturday) for a job well done.

One last note, remember at the conclusion of every meeting we have a drawing for $50 cash. You must be present to win, and we draw until we have a winner.

FEBRUARY 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included chicken teriyaki, grilled veggies, rice, salad, rolls and dessert - chocolate covered strawberries.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 85 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Mike Montgomery, Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Rich Scoville, Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.
The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.
New Members: Miles Calvin, Stacy Barr and George Lanese introduced themselves and were given the "new member tour" by Past President Tom Retterath.

President Fulford reiterated our procedure regarding speed of play: the first ten groups of the field must play in 4½ hours, the second ten groups in 4¾ hours, and the third ten groups in 5 hours and the remainder of the field in 5¼ hours, or finish within 15 minutes of the group ahead of you. If not, everyone in your group will be assessed a two stroke penalty. Braz expressed concern about the choice of hole #17 as a "special events hole" requiring measurements, which takes additional time. Terry said we would consider that in the future.

Cliff Aichele noted that Special Events for the upcoming Select Drive Tournament would be closest to the pin on all par 3 holes except #17. He reminded everyone to pick up their winnings within 90 days or lose them to the Club Treasury.

Jim Ridenour recounted the January Away Tournament at Rec Park, with a record crowd of 80 players. Next Away Tournament is March 2 at Los Serranos South. Cost is $80 including cart. Sign up by 2/24.

Mike Moraitis announced Golfer of the Month winners for January: Gross (72) was Tom Retterath (I guess once you're no longer President, the game improves significantly) and Net (69) Greg Lester. Remember to fill out your card properly -GHIN#, signed, attested, dated, tees played, etc. The 9 Hole pre-meeting tournament starts next month, blue tees, with a $5 entry free. Golfer of the Year Tournament is now scheduled for Saturday, March 1. Thursday Team Play is now 2-2. If we win out, we're in the playoffs.

Mike Vaughn reported that the Quad Club will be limited to 25 players from each course this year, and that the Putting Tournament would start next month.

Nick Zamora announced that the January Scramble pay-outs were in the box. The February Select Drive Tournament is full "180 players" with starting times from 6:15 to 11:50. So play at a good pace so everyone can finish. March is a 2-3-4 Waltz on 3/16 "the annual Pat Harris St. Patrick's Day" Event.

There was no old or new business. The lucky $50 drawing winner was Jim Ridenour (I should have gotten on the Board years ago.).

I am looking forward to another year hosting the Putting tournament before the general meeting each month during Daylight Saving Time. This fun will start between 5:15 to 5:30 meeting night on the south green. The seasoned veterans are expected to participate and hope some more members test the waters of this fun activity.

As of this writing the 2014 Quad Club appears unlikely to happen. With one opponents placing their Club Championship on the last weekend of April the weekend typically used for the inter-Club competition is not an available weekend. There has been talk of holding it on a weekday, however this would not allow key team members to participate and defend our 2013 win.

Always remember to enjoy yourself while at and on the golf course, irrelevant to how you may have played.

There was a bunch of competition for January's "Golfers of the Month" as a total of 3 scorecards were submitted. Our Gross GOM with a round of 72 is Tom Retterath. Our Net winner is Greg Lester with a score of 69. Nice work, boys.

The Golfer of the Year Tournament has been moved to Saturday, March 8th due to pending weather conditions. If you haven't already done so, please notify me if you intend to play.

On March 11th we will have our first 9-hole tournament of the year. Just sign up in the pro-shop and leave $5 in the envelope. Remember, you must play with another El Dorado member. The March tournament will be played from the BLUE tees.

Thursday Team Play finished in second place with a 3-3 record. Although we missed the playoffs, the team fought hard and played a lot of good golf. A big THANK YOU to Captain Mark Ziegenhagen for all of his time and hard work.

Seems like only yesterday that we signing up the Select Drive Tournament and now we are signing up for the Pat Harris Waltz and giving out the results for the Select Drive. Time flies when you are having fun on the links, I guess. We had another great turnout on February 16th. The event was our traditional Select Drive. The game is played with each player teeing off and "selecting" the best drive. From there each person plays their own ball in including putting. Many players actually thought they were real golfers after finishing with some low scores and wanted to post a "golfer of the month" score. There were 15 players who shot 61 or less net. Sorry boys but this was not a postable round.

The weather was nice and we were at overflow capacity. We had 185 players starting at 6:15 and the last team went out at 12:00. I should know, I was the last team. The pace of play was not bad as we finished in 5 hours. So it can be done. We only penalized 1 team for not finishing in time so keep up the good work and keep up with the group in front of you instead of behind you. The results show that Flight 1, Team Hasselman, even with Tom Montgomery, shot a gross 203. Net was Team Cliff with a 185. Flight 2 gross was Team Shaun Ferguson and this gang. They shot a 219. Watch out boys we are watching you - BLIP, BLIP, BLIP. Net was Team Rob Kuehn 187. What a club!. In Flight 3 we see gross was Team Russell(again) at 220 and net was Team "Big Al" Reinking at 182. All the results are posted.

The March 16th home tournament will be the famous Pat Harris, St. Patrick's Day Waltz. This is our first postable round of the year and you play your own ball from tee to green. The format waltz is to count 2 net scores on the first hole, 3 net scores on the second hole, and 4 net scores on the third hole, and repeat 2-3-4,2-3-4,2-3-4. This is a 5 man team. The cost is $55 and $60 on gameday. So get your money in early and you can pay at the meeting, or put an envelope in the drawer at the pro shop, or mail to me at 2116 S Yale St., Santa Ana, 92704. I am still looking for a few players so get in touch and don't be left out.

I will be taking signups for the April 13th 1 Gross 2 net Tournament at the general meeting on March 11. So come get a ticket for the draw and PUT YOUR NAME ON IT.

Now for a little Saturday Team Play action. It has been exciting to say the least. After a dominate start and 2 strong wins, the team went into a little side spin with a tie and 2 bad losses. We played our last match at home on the 22nd of Feb. against Santa Anita. We had a bit of an issue in regards to the starting time but after some quick thinking and fast footwork everything went under control and we beat them soundly 31-17. On the same day in Pasadena, Brookside was having a battle with Rancho Park and ended up with a tie. So now if Santa Anita beats Brookside at home (which Santa Anita has not lost at home all year) we would win the division and move on to the playoffs. We would be 3-2-1 and Brookside would be 2-2-2. What a country!!!!! So stay tuned to here the results if ELDO can move on.

It was fantastic seeing all the new faces at the check in table for the February Select Drive Tournament. It was also great to see that some of those same new members hit it close on the par 3s and were able to grab special events money. It was unbelievable, and the odds longer then Livy dunking a basketball on a regulation height hoop, that Director Rob Kuhen cashed on two of the par 3s and is a member of the 2nd Flight net winners group! Rob you might want to pick up a couple of lottery tickets.

Membership is growing and that's a great thing. In turn, the special events participation and payouts will hopefully grow as well. The C-Flight seems to generally have the fewest number of entrants. Just remember how disappointed you'll feel if you knock it close, make a birdie or play extraordinarily well and you decided not to jump in the special events pool.

Here's a couple reminders: first, everyone make sure to mark the "Closest To The Pin" green side placards clearly with first and last name. Now that we're getting 180 or more players for our monthly tournaments, first name and initials isn't enough. Second, it's the players responsibility to make sure special events are reported to the scoring table at the completion of play.

The silly season is now over and this means back to playing your own ball for the entire round and the return of games like Skins, North Of Willow, and Beat The Pro etc.

It's February 28 and I'm in Las Vegas at my niece's wedding. I'm trying to get a hold of Los Serranos to cancel the tournament for March 2nd.

I'll know in an hour or so, and try to get the word out. We are trying to reschedule for some time in August.

Now, on to better things. On March 30th we are going back to Rio Hondo for what is always a really fun tournament. I'm not going to say what we are playing, but you might launder your orange shirts.

By the way, the tournament director at Los Serranos told me that with the 68 players we had in the tournament, it was the largest outside men's club they had ever had, and that we must have a very active men's club. It makes me proud to be part of a thriving men's club.

Our first two tournaments where we do not post scores have come and gone. March is the start of posting your scores so here are a few reminders for you.

Each tournament you will be instructed on how you should post your score for that tournament: Regular score or a Tournament score. Just because you play in a monthly EDMC tournament does not mean that you post a Tournament score. "Routine" events such as regular play days, normally are not designated as T scores because they are not significant in the tradition, schedules, formats, and membership of the club "USGA Handicap System."

Posting your scores:
There are 3 basic ways you can post scores as an El Dorado Men's Club Member:
Post your score at the course where you played, Post on line at the SCGA web site or by your mobile phone, and if all else fails, contact me and I will post your score.

The USGA, SCGA, and Board of Directors expect you to post all eligible rounds, try the best of you ability on each shot, and to play by the rules of golf. One warning will be given if you fail to post. If you fail to post for the second time, a Penalty or P round will be given. A P score is a round posted equal to you lowest round in your scoring record. Please take a few minutes and Post All Your Scores.

Gentlemen, On February 18th I went out to Temecula Creek for the SCGA Rules seminar. I did learn a lot, already forgot half of it, but will try to help out in any way I can. At least Livy is only a phone call away. Here is a rules teaser for you!

KINGFISHES tee shot on a 300 yard par 4 comes to rest in the fairway 10 yards behind a moveable 150 yard stake. Although it did not interfere with KINGFISHES area of intended swing, the stake was a distraction to him, so he lifted his ball, cleaned it, and dropped it one club length to the side where the stake didn't intervene with his line of play. Prior to playing a stroke KINGFISHES competitor, GRUMPY, advised him he wasn't entitled to relief. KINGFISH then placed the ball back to its original position, chunked one, knocked it on the green and 3 putted. What is KINGFISHES score for the hole:

Ok, now that Spring is here, the golf course should be getting in even better shape than it has been. This past winter was so mild it seems the grass stayed good all winter, or maybe Mark just did a great job.

This month we have our Senior Club Championship the 26 & 27, please get your entry from to me as soon as possible. In May we have our Member Member. Please contact Nick Zamora to get signed up for this tournament. The course should be in great shape. Of course, we can always help out by ensuring we fill in our divots, rake bunkers, and repair our ball marks on the green.

Reminder, the stronger our membership base is, the better it is for our club and for each of you. Also, just a reminder we do hold a $50 drawing each month at our General Meeting where you must be present to win, so come on by and support the club with your attendance! Also, the 9-hole & putting contents have started prior to each General Meeting.

Your 2014 Board is working very hard to continue to make ElDo the best golf club here in SoCal. Your Board of Directors is open to suggestions on ways to make the club better. If you have a great idea, please let us know. They have installed a new posting computer in the pro shop, the touch screen is now working.

MARCH 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included chicken fajitas, sausage and tortellini, grilled vegies, salad, garlic bread and cookies.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 90 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Jerry Leininger, Mike Montgomery, Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Rich Scoville, Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.
New Members: New members Steve Israel, Paul Henry and Manny Miranda introduced themselves and were given the "New Member Briefing" by Past President Retterath.

Director's Reports were as follows:
Jerry Leininger: The Club now has a new computer in the Pro Shop so score posting will be even quicker now. Don't forget to post your scores after this next tournament "DO NOT POST A 'T' SCORE. Remember to put your GHIN number on all cards you give to Jerry, all GOM cards, etc.

Terry Fulford: Upcoming events include the Senior Club Championship on April 26/27. Entry fee is $100. Entry forms are available on the Web Site. You must have played in three Club events in the last 12 months to be eligible to play. June is our Club Championship - same rules. Both will be played at your 6 month L.I.. May is the Member/Member.

Dennis Tramer: Dennis attended a Rules Seminar this past month - very interesting. Our next Away Tournament is March 30 at Rio Hondo. It's an Orange Ball Event, and first tee time is 8:30. The rained-out Los Serranos Away Trip was rescheduled for June 29.

Cliff Aichele: Since we're back to playing our own balls this month, Special Events will include Skins, Beat the Pro, C-T-P on #3, and In the Circle on #17.

Mike Vaughn: We only had 8 players in the Putting Contest tonight. Tied for first were Larry Grant and Tom Montgomery. The future of Quad Club is still up in the air.

Mike Moraitis: Thursday Team Play just missed the Playoffs. Kudos to Ziggy for a job well done as Captain. Winner of the 9 Hole Tournament (with 12 players) was Don Pichovich with a Net 36. Golfers of the Month for February were Geoff Lee with a Gross 67 (wow!) and Charlie Kerr with a net 65. The Golfer of the Year Winners were Gross - Omar Diaz 71 in a Playoff with Dave Rubin, and Net - Lance Lomax - 74. Lance won in a Card-Off with Matt Munkelf, who had already left. Probably thought Net 74 wouldn't be quite good enough.

Nick Zamora: Our next Tournament is the Pat Harris St. Patrick's Day 2-3-4 Waltz. We have 190 players, starting at 6:51. Remember our speed of play concerns - the first 10 groups have 4 1/2 hours, the second 10 have 4¾ hours, the third 10 have 5 hours, and the fourth 10 have 5 1/4 hours to finish. Your actual tee off time will be marked on your scorecard. The April Tournament is 1 Gross 2 Net. Saturday Team Play finished 3-2-1 and made the Playoffs. We start this coming Saturday against LA Royal Vista.

Welcome to spring. We had a record low number of eight (8) members in the "Count 'em All" Putting Contest on the south putting green before the March meeting. 1st place had a 2-way tie with Larry Grant and Tom Montgomery each scoring 2-under par 16 and pocketing 25 skins. Larry Bartley, Doug Jones and David Ahmadi scored 1-under par 17 for a 3-way tie for 2nd and each collected 7 skins. The next putting contest will get under way NLT 5:30 meeting night on the south green. Let's at least double the number of participants.

Due to a competitor's short sighted-ness (scheduling their Club Championship on the last week of April) there will not be a Quad Club event in 2014. The next Quad Club will be held at Skylinks on Saturday April 25, 2015. The format will change from stroke play to an Individual Stableford, and the team size is being reduced from 40 to 25. Players who scored 3 points for us last year will be offered a spot. Those scoring 2 will be among the first recruited.

Our 2013 Golfers of the Year have been crowned. Both the NET and GROSS flights were hotly contested, each requiring tie-breakers to determine the final outcome.

The NET flight was deadlocked after 18 holes, as both Lance Lomax and Matt Munkelt turned in matching scores of Net 74. By rule we went to a card-off to break the tie, and Lance Lomax was declared the NET Golfer of the Year.

The GROSS flight was also deadlocked in regulation, as Dave Rubin used some 18th hole heroics to match Omar Diaz - each posting a round of 71. We went to a sudden-death tiebreaker to determine a winner, and Omar ended things early with a birdie on the first (18) sudden death hole to claim the GROSS Golfer of the Year title. Congratulations to all the participants and especially to Lance and Omar.

The February installation of Golfer of the Month showed increased participation over January, and some pretty stellar scores. Geoff Lee carded a blistering 67 to claim the GROSS award and Charlie Kerr posted a net 65 to earn the NET award. Congrats gentlemen - great shootin'.

Please remember to include your GHIN #, tees you played, your L/I, date, and which Eldo member you played with on all submitted cards.

The 9-hole tournament we be held on 4/8. We will once again be playing BLUE tees.

Hello everyone I hope all is good in the "HOUSE OF GOLF." March 16 was our Pat Harris St. Patty's Day Waltz Tournament and we had nice sunny skies for our event. Even Daylight Saving couldn't keep our boys from teeing up early and often. We had another overflow crowd which shows great support for the club and also makes for bigger prizes. Keep up the good work.

The results show that Flight one net was Team Cliff (big surprise) Gross was Team Vander Broek (no surprise) Flight 2 Gross was Team Russell (no surprise)net was Team Ruben (no surprise) Flight 3 Gross was Team Retterath (big surprise, what are they doing in flight 3) and net was Team Kilgore (big surprise, I thought they all went to the hospital. All results are posted. Thank you for a smooth event and we had no penalties which is great news.

Sunday April 13 is our next event. We call it the 1 Gross and 2 Net Tournament. The cost is $55 if you pay before the 13th and $60 on game day, so get your money in sooner than later. I do have some openings still available so come see me or email me if you want in.

Our biggest tournament of the year is the Member/Member scheduled for May 17 and 18. It is a great golf weekend filled with trash talking and good memories. The cost is $120/player and I am taking sign ups at the April and May meetings. You can also email me or put your name on the entry form and put in the box at the club. You can find the entry form on the web or at the meeting. If you are a single and need a player come see me and we will pair you with another member. The overall winner of this event will be eligible to represent the Club in the SCGA 4 Ball tournament held later in the year. The format for the member/member will be best ball on Saturday and (count them all) aggregate on Sunday. The tournament will be played at your LI or assigned handicap whichever is lower.

Finally Saturday Team Play did win the division and went to the first round of the playoffs on March 22. We played LA Royal Vista and unfortunately we lost to a very strong team 36-12. I want to thank all the players who participated all year and for their devotion, time and energy. We had a great season. We have made it to the playoffs 2 years in a row and I feel we are right on the edge of greatness. I look forward to next year and another great season.

Special Events had some great payouts in March. Out of the 180 plus players in the field 18 percent won points in one or more the of the three side pots. There were 7 guys that Beat the Pro, Brian Gonzales' score of 69, and each one got 100 points. There were 11 members to get inside the circle on hole 17 with C-Flight having 5, the most of any flight. These C Flight guys are good! There was a 12th player in the C-Flight to make it in the circle on 17 green. Unfortunately, I was unable to identify him. I just couldn't quite make out the name it was something like Kak Saker, Cork Screewer or Coct Sucer. I'm just not sure, but you know how you are.

Tom Montgomery really killed it with a skin, CTP and Beat the Pro. Jeez take it easy on us Tom we're just a bunch of weekend hackers. I hope everyone had as much fun as our group did. It helped that we finished first net in our flight for the second month in a row, which is extremely rare. Believe me, I'm the one stuffing the envelopes. I'll be looking forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting.

Well we all had a great time at Rio Hondo and we had another full field except for one over sleeper. There were some good scores posted, none better then Nick Zamora's group of bandits. Low gross was Omar Diaz with a 69, net was Bill Ward with a net 67 The scores will be posted on the website as soon as I can figure how to do it.

The next away trip will be on Sat. May 31 at Soboba Springs. It is a little ways to drive, but a great golf course. I think it will be a 8:30 shotgun more information later. I will start taking sign ups for Soboba at the April meeting.

This month we have our annual Member/Member tournament. I am hoping we have a lot of our membership signing up to play in one of our marquee tournaments of the year. If you haven't signed up yet, please contact Nick Zamora to reserve your spot.

Our Sr. Club Championship was held this past month. Congratulations to Rich Boyker for winning the Senior Club Championship Gross Division. We have a Father Son club champions. Congratulations to Don Didier for winning the A Flight division and Mike Pircher winning the B Flight division. The Net winners from the Senior and Club Championships will have a one day play-off tournament with the winner representing our club in the Net Flight division in the SCGA Tournament of Champions.

The Club Championship tournament will be held in June (see Entry Form on the club website and golf course). The dates for this are 6/14, 6/21, and 6/22, with a cost of $100. Each participant has to sign up for the June home tournament on 6/14 and pay the normal entry fee of $55. Like always, the more participation this tournament gets, the better the competition! Assuming we have enough players for Gross, A & B Net flights. If you have any questions about the Club Championship, please contact me directly.

APRIL 2014 MEETING MINUTES

There were approximately 70 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

New Members: Matt Leonetti introduced himself and was taught the secret handshake by Past President Tom Retterath.

Director's Reports were as follows:

Terry Fulford: The Member-Member Tournament is coming up - May 17/18 - be sure to sign up.

Cliff Aichele: Special Events in April will include Skins, One Closest-to-the-Pin, and Bookends (net par or better on holes 1, 9, 10 and 18. Total cost is $10.

Jim Ridenour: The Rio Hondo Away Tournament went well. See me after the meeting for winnings. Our next Away Tournament is Soboba Springs on Saturday, May 31. It's an 8am shotgun start and the cost is $70.
Mike Moraitis: We had 15 players for the 9 Hole Tournament today. First was Dan Hertzler with a net 34, followed closely by Tom Seidl with a net 34.5. Golfers of the Month for March were Omar Diaz - Gross 71 and Tom Montgomery - Net 65.

Nick Zamora: March Tournament results are posted on the Website. Informing everyone of their required finishing times on the first tee seemed to help to avoid penalties for slow play. The April Tournament is One Gross, Two Net. We have 190 players, so starting times run from 6:15 to noon. The Member-Member Tournament is May 17/18, with Saturday played as Best Ball and Sunday as Aggregate. Come to the Friday Night Pairing Party for free appetizers and lots of comradery.

The Saturday Team Play lost in the first round of the Playoffs. Regarding roped-off areas around the course (like the right sides of #10 and #15) - If it is not signed as "Ground Under Repair" you must play it as it lies. The ropes are just there to keep carts out while the grass grows.

Mike Vaughn: We had a pretty good turnout for the Putting Tournament today. First place went to Greg Englant and second place to Tom Montgomery (at least one Montgomery can putt). There will be no Quad Club in 2014, but it will resume in 2015 (April 25 at Skylinks). The Flights Tournament (Match Play) will be starting up soon.

Old Business - none.

New Business - We will be changing the Senior Championship back to August next year.

Wow, this year is 1/3 of the way over, time goes too fast. In April we had "Aces Only" Putting Contest on the south putting green. There was an 8-way tie for 3rd place with 2-Aces taking $3 each, Tom Montgomery nailed 3-Aces to take 2nd place and $34, while Greg Englant rolled in 4 of them to grab the win and $48. The next putting contest will get under way around 5:30 meeting night on the south green.

As long as I have been a member of El Dorado Men's Club this was the first April we were not able to participate in the Quad Club event. Starting in 2015 Officials have "locked in" the last Saturday of April to be the date for Quad Club. The next event returns to Skylinks on Saturday April 25, 2015. The format has been changed to be a game where putting out is not required (i.e. such as a Stableford). Team size has been reduced from 40 to 25. Players who scored 3 points for us last year will be offered a spot. Those scoring 2 will be among the first recruited.

It's time to start taking signups for the Flights tournament. You will be able to play your first match on August 1. Entry will be $20 per person, the same rate it has been for several years. Sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board.

Omar dropped a slick 71 during our "Golfer of the Year" Tourney... I guess he picked the right time to go low.
Tom Montgomery continued his run of good golf (and cashing tickets) by posting a 65 Net. Mr. Leininger will be keeping an eye on this guy for a while.

9-Hole tournament will continue as it has been for May - we will once again play the BLUE tees.

We're working on a way to connect Eldo members who are searching for playing partners on 9-hole days... will keep you posted on our progress.

Hello Gentlemen,

I hope all is well for you and yours and you are getting a chance to play a lot of golf. Our April Tournament "One Gross and One Net" was our biggest for the year so far, which means more prizes and more fun. So keep up the great participation and super support. You make our club very proud. We had a new winner in Flight 1. Team Ostberg picked up a new member and just beat out the Hasselman gang by one stroke to take 1st, Hasselman 2nd, 3rd was Team Montgomery, tied for 4th was Team Miller (seeing a lot of them lately) and Livy, 6th was Team Crowder (with the addition of Ziggy)?? Flight 2 winner was Team Pres. (with Mel Collins and Doug Jones, no wonder), tied for 2nd was Team Wilcox and Team O'Hara, tied for 4th (was a group of singles) Cheong, Walker, Boylan, Moore, Brno and Team Tramer. Tied for 6th was Team Gonzales and Team Henson. Flight 3 winner was Team Lucero (who are being watched!), 2nd was Team Kovaloff (good to see those guys on the scoreboard again), 3rd was Team Bryan, tied for 4th was Uncle Ray and the Bartley gang, tied for 6th was Team Vaughn and Team Kilgore. All the results are on the web.

Coming up in May is our biggest tournament of the year. We call it the "Member/Member." The date is May 17 and 18. The format will be Best Ball on Saturday and Aggregate (count them all) on Sunday. The cost is $120/player. Everyone will play to their low index or assigned handicap, whichever is lower. Saturday we play from the blue tees and Sunday from the white tees. We are filling up quickly so if you want to play in this exciting weekend event you must act now. There are registration forms on the web and at the computer in the pro shop.

We are also having a cocktail party on Friday the 16th from 5:30 to 7:30 under the tent at the clubhouse. So come out and meet and greet you fellow opponents and make a wager or two on your team or any other team. It will be a lot of fun and a great way to start out what will be a very competitive weekend.

In order to play in this tournament you must have played in 3 of our events in the last 12 months, which includes the 9 hole tournament on meeting nights. The net winning team will be eligible to represent our club in the annual SCGA 2 Man Better Ball Club Tournament to be played later in the year.

At our next general meeting I will be taking signups for our next tournament scheduled for June 14th. We call it The Partners Best Ball Blind Draw. This will also be the first round of the Club Championship.

In my two plus years as Special Event Director I had a first this month. I was unable to fit all of the 122 winning envelopes into the blue box. But not to worry, I'll make sure they're all available for pick up meeting night. Apparently April's tournament was the month for a lot of winners that didn't win a lot? Almost a third of the field won special events points for something. Book Ends paid 3 to 1 with 37 players getting10 bucks each, that's not bad. The big winner, can you believe it was Dave "I never get an envelope" Hasselman! Not a single player broke into triple digit points, but there were 11 players that won 50 points or more.

Next month Beat the Pro will return for one day of the Member Member. Saturday and Sunday team sweeps is always a popular M/M event. Sweeps will be $20 for Saturday and another $20 for Sunday per team. Sweeps will be paying the 3 lowest net scores each day. Special Events will be $10 per day plus $5 for beat the pro one day TBD. Total cost per player for the weekend to get in everything: $45. Just remember that sweeps are a team bet and have to be paid as a team. Again, sweeps are a team beat, so be sure to get with your partner and pay all together. I will have sign up sheets at the Tuesday night meeting and Friday's pairing party. I would like to get as many players signed up ahead of time as possible. I don't plan to take signups on Sunday it makes it a lot easer for everyone.

Coming up at the meeting I will be taking signups for Soboba that is Saturday, May 31st. This is a 8:00 SHOTGUN and the cost will be $70 and it will be an additional $10 for gross and net skins which is optional. This is a great golf course and our members enjoy playing it every year. It's worth the drive, being an 8:00 Shotgun you should still be able to get home early if you don't drink too much, Kervin this means you.

The weekender at Pala Mesa is coming up quickly. We need to send in deposits of $100 per room by August 25th, so you better start thinking about it. Entry forms should be on the website in June. This is a great golf course and a good time will be had by all. This trip is October 3-5. Friday is optional and will be $49.

The package price is as follows for 2 rounds of golf and 2 nights:
2 people in room and 1 golfer is $303.84
2 people in room and 2 golfers is $196.92 per person

As a follow-up to our note last week, I wanted to pass along the below letter from the USGA. It seems its representatives are working hard to fix the recent issues with GHIN, and we at the SCGA will continue to keep you up to date on their progress. For now, the USGA has advised us that it has expanded the window when score posting at course computers is forced into "offline mode", now from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This allows members of the club associated with the computer to post scores, but guests will receive the following message: "Score posting is temporarily unavailable. Please post your score via the mobile app or at www.GHIN.com." This guest score alternative applies solely to clubs that do allow internet score posting.

For those clubs with duplication of scores, you do not need to take any action. Between the USGA and the SCGA, we are purging duplicate scores on a periodic basis and will definitely do our best to keep scoring records free of replication for the May 1 handicap revision.

We had a GREAT Member/Member tournament in May. Starting with the pairing party Friday evening with munchies and a few cocktails. Great job to Nick and the El Dorado Staff for making the event run very smoothly. Next up is our Club Championship!

The Club Championship tournament will be held on 6/14, 6/21 and 6/22, with a separate cost of $100 to be placed in the Men's Club drawer with their entry form. Each participant has to sign up for the June home tournament on 6/14 and pay the normal entry fee of $55 to Nick. Like always, the more participation this tournament gets, the better the competition! I am assuming we well have enough players for Gross, A & B Net flights. At the time of this news letter I only have 7 people signed up (that is total), so if you want to play please sign up as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Club Championship, please contact me directly.

MAY 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included salad, rolls, rice, and chicken stir fry - not the chef's best effort.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 65 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Jerry Leininger and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.

New Members: Mike Greenlee introduced himself and received the New Member Indoctrination Spiel from Past President Tom Retterath.

Director's Reports were as follow:

Terry Fulford summarized recent Tournament Winners: Golfer of the Year: Gross - Omar Diaz; Net - Lance Lomax. Senior Golfer of the Year: Championship Flight - Rich Boyker; A Flight - Don Didier; B Flight - Mike Pircher. Terry reminded everyone about the Friday Night Pairing Party before the Member-Member Tournament.

Jerry Leininger noted that the SCGA computer posting problem appears to be resolved; that the Board will post all scores for this weekend's Member-Member; and that Sunday's round will be a 'T' (Tournament) round.

Mike Montgomery reminded us that the Long Beach Open is coming up in July, and he will start selling raffle tickets in June for a spot in the event.

Dennis Tramer discussed the "Relief Rule", using an example of #7 at El Do.

Cliff Aichele discussed "Sweeps" for the weekend - $20 per day per team. Individual special events will include: Saturday Skins, Closest to the Pin, and "Down the Stretch"; Sunday " Skins", two Closest to the Pins and "Beat The Pro", his gross versus your net.

Jim Ridenour urged sign-ups for our next Away Tournament - May 31st at Soboba Springs.

Mike Vaughn discussed the results of the Putting Tournament. We had 11 players, and Greg Englant won at 4 under. Match Play sign-ups will start next week. The Quad Club will resume in 2015.

Mike Moraitis announced the winner of the 9 Hole Tournament - Tom Montgomery with a Net 33. Golfers of the Month were Vern Followell - Gross 70 and Mike Drew - Net 66.

Nick Zamora discussed the Member-Member Tournament. We have 160 members playing - the most for this tournament in many years. Jerry Leininger is providing appetizers at the Pairing Party, and Dennis Tramer is running the Horse Race. A couple of single spots are still available. Saturday is Best Ball from the Blue Tees, and Sunday is Aggregate from the White Tees. The two winning teams represent El Do at the SCGA 2 Ball Event.

There was no Old Business.

Under New Business, Livy reminded everyone to pay for Special Events at the Pairings Party to avoid delays on Saturday and Sunday. He also congratulated long-time member Mel Collins on his victory in the SCGA Senior Four Ball Event.

The winner of the $50 drawing was Tom LeBrun.

The May Putting Contest was a "Count 'em All" on the south putting green. Bruce Bates and Ken Louie tied for 3rd with 2-under that pocketed $10 for each of them. Larry Grant and Terry Henson took 2nd with 3-under and $15, while Greg Englant wins this in back-to-back months with 4-under for $50. The next putting contest will get under way around 5:30 meeting night on the south green.

Flights Championship sign-up sheet has been posted on the bulletin board. Place your name, GHIN Number, Low Index, telephone number and email on the sheet. Your $20 Entry can be placed in the Men's Club drawer in the cabinet the computer is set. Place the $20 cash, or check made payable to Mike Vaughn, in an envelope noting your name and Flights entry. Only entries that are pre-paid will be placed on a bracket. Your first match can be played starting August 1.

Vern Followell posted a smooth 70 to capture the GROSS honors. In the NET category, Mike Drew edged out Steve Liebeck on a match of cards, as each posted a net 66. Congrats to Vern and Mike.

In last month's 9-hole Tourney, Tom Montgomery(net 33), Greg Englant (net 35) and Dan Hertzler (net 35.5) all cashed in... Nice shootin', boys.

This month's 9-hole will be played from the WHITE TEES. I repeat... WHITE TEES. Let's see if this doesn't shake things up a little...

Hello Gentlemen,

Our annual Member/Member Tournament on May 17-18 2014 was a huge success. I want to thank all those who participated (and you know who you are) in this amazing event. From our own Jerry Leininger who supplies all the food on Friday, to the El Dorado Management and staff who takes care of us from the cocktail party on Friday to the final finishing team on Sunday and beyond. I want to thank the El Dorado Men's Club Directors for their help and support all weekend. We could not have done it without you "team". A special thanks goes to Bob Livingstone who does our scoreboards and puts up with the help who feeds him the scores.

This year we ended up with 140 players which is more than we have had in years. There were a lot of new faces on the leader board which helped keep some of the usual suspects on their toes. One team in particular came ready to play. Jerry Thomas and Mike Howard put on a clinic both days. From Flight 2 they shot a best ball 60 on Saturday which was the lowest in the whole field for the day. I guess a gross 69 for Mike Howard doesn't hurt. On Sunday they kept the petal to the metal and finished with 140 aggregate. Together their 200 was the lowest for any team for the whole weekend. This time Jerry stepped up and shot a net 69 to power his team to victory. That is what you call Ham and Egg, good job boys. We had 4 flights this year and these are the results:

At the next general meeting on June 10, I will be taking signups for July 12 Red-White-Blue Tournament. The cost is $55 and the format is 3 best balls played from some red tees some white tees and some blue tees. So bring your money when signing up. It will cost you $60 on the day of the Tournament.

I still have some spots available for the June 14th Partner Blind Draw which is also the first day of the Club Championship. Team Thomas & Howard blasted out to lead on Saturday and never looked back. They successfully swept the B-Flight sweeps winning low net both days. These guys are a couple of newer members that came to play and did a great job. Next time around the sweeps format may need some tweaking to create a little higher payouts. Paying 3 spots in 4 flights watered down the points a bit. Justin Vander Broek, John Davis, Michael Pircher and Chris Smith all had a very successful weekend cracking into triple digit Special Event points.

On Sunday, our Pro Brian "Gonzo" Gonzales did not have the game I hoped for shooting 74 enabling 41 players to cash in on "Beat The Pro." Look out the next time we have "Beat The Pro", I think Brian may want to set things straight and go real low. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting and then on tournament day.

Hope you are all well. We had our Soboba drive trip on May 31st and all had a great time.I can't believe Lamerton and his band of merry men win again. He shot net 68 to win low net, and two closest to the pins. And his team of Tanner, Ramsey and Lucero won the tournament
Our next drive trip will be on Sun., June 29th at Los Serranos south. Sign-ups will be taken at the meeting. Don't forget Los Verdes on Saturday July 24th.
Sorry Team Lamerton, but I have to find something to put in this article every month, and your good playing was something to bust your chops about.

It appears that the computer issue with GHIN scores recorded at local golf courses is behind us. I got an email from the SCGA letting us know that there have been modifications made to the software and it has worked very well for the last few weeks.
If you are still having difficulties posting remember you can post 2 additional ways: Post on the SCGA wed site, or call me and I will be happy to post for your. Please remember when you call or email me to include your GHIN number, the course your played, the date , and the slope and rating for the golf course you played.

Please make sure that you are using the 'equitable stroke control' for your course handicap for that day. That is the adjustment where the maximum numbers of strokes you can take is as follows;
9 or Less - Double Bogey
10 to 19 7 strokes maximum
20 to 29 8 strokes
30 to 39 9 strokes
40 or more 10 strokes

Were halfway thru the 2014 year, boy how time flies! We held our Club Championships in June. Congratulations to Ryan Boyker, Bruce Titus, and Lee McCullough who are our Club Champs! Each flight was very competitive.

Reminder to sign up for our Flights tournament which is run by Mike Vaughn. Match play is a different type of golf and it usually brings out the competitive spirit within our club.

Also, as most of you know El Dorado plays host to the Long Beach Open this month. We will be holding a raffle drawing on meeting night for 3 spots in the Pro/Am tournament to be held on July 23th. The Pro/Am is a very cool experience. Hopefully you will come to the meeting and buy some raffle tickets!

JUNE 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, not in the Big White Tent but in the restaurant due to a scheduling bogey. The pre-meeting dinner included sausage and peppers, chicken fajitas, grilled veggies, pasta and marinara, salad, garlic bread and dessert.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 75 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Tom Retterath, Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.

New Members: They were no new members present.

President Fulford noted that the SCGA Magazine interviewed Ryan and Rich Boyker (our Club Champion and Senior Club Champion) for an upcoming article in the magazine. He also noted that Bob Livingstone is "going through the ranks" at the SCGA, and will be President in 6 years.

Director's Reports were as follow:

Mike Montgomery: Mike is selling raffle tickets for a spot in the Long Beach Open.

Dennis Tramer: Dennis announced results of the "Horse Race" from the Member/Member Tournament last month.

Bob Livingstone: Scheduled improvements to the Tee areas on Holes #2,11,16 & 18 will begin soon.

Cliff Aichele: Special Events at the June "Blind Draw" Tournament will include Skins and CTP on all Par 3 Holes, with three winners in each Flight.

Jim Ridenour: Jim presented results of the Soboba Springs Away Tournament, which Jim referred to as the "Lamerton Open". Our next Away Tournament is June 29 at Los Serranos.

Mike Moraitis: Golfers of the Month for May were Mike Howard 'Gross 69 and Kerry Bryan 'Net 65. There were 5 players tied for the pre-meeting Putting Contest 'Bruce Titus, Corey Smith, George Lanese, Kerry Bryant and Sebastian Sturdevant. The 9 Hole Tournament was won by Bruce Titus, with a Net 31, followed by Dennis Tramer (32.5) and Kirk Jondle (33).

Nick Zamora: The Member/Member Tournament featured some really good scores, especially by Mike Howard and Jerry Thomas. We had a very good turnout for the event. The Blind Draw Tournament is next, and is also the first day of the Club Championship, a three day event that concludes on June 21-22. For the Blind Draw we will utilize Equitable Stroke Control. Post your own score. July will be the Red-White-Blue Tournament, to be posted as a score from the White Tees.

There was no Old Business or New Business.

The winner of the $50 drawing was Rick Evans.

Time certainly flies. It is time to enter and compete in our annual single elimination "Match Play" Flight Championship tournament. The signup sheet is posted in the hallway. Place your name and information on the signup sheet (or email me your entry information) ASAP. The 16-player Brackets will be constructed using your July 15 LI. Matches are to be played between the first and last day of each month. Matches are to be played at your LI the day of your match during the months of August, September and October with Championship matches in November. Should a match need to be played during the first week of the next month the players must contact me with the reason it could not be played before month's end for special consideration. Failure to do this will result in disqualification of both players. A word to the wise is to review the Rules of Golf 2012-2015 for Match Play as applications and penalties are different from Stoke Play in a number of instances.

As noted, time flies. Make yourself aware that your time to sign up and pay the entry fee is closing fast. Place your info on the signup sheet and place your $20 check (made payable to Mike Vaughn) or cash in an envelope noting "Flights entry" in the right hand Men's Club drawer in the computer cabinet in the Pro Shop. I will personally take Flights entry and entry fees at the July Putting tournament, the meeting, at the Red-White-Blue tournament July 12. If you have not signed up, as well as paid your $20 entry by the time I stop by El Dorado to get the last of the entries on Sunday morning July 27 you will not have a place on the brackets. Let's make this a priority so we fill five (5) Flights the same as we did last year.

Saturday and Sunday morning times will be secured from Rick for each month, playable at "Resident rate" for Match Play participants only. These times will be made known to all participants via continual email communication. If you want to play your match during one of these times you will need to let me know NLT than Wednesday afternoon of that week as times not filled will be returned to American Golf on Wednesday night to avoid us being responsible for unfilled reservations.

Mike Moraitis conducted the Putting contest for June while I was out of state. I hear he held an "Aces Only" event that was as smooth as drawn butter. Thank you, Mike. Mark your iPhone calendars to be at the course meeting night Tuesday July 8 to traverse the course I will put together, likely a count them all with a twist to take your shot at claiming top prize. The contest will be under way by 5:30 on the south green.

Golfers of the month for May are (relatively) new member Mike Howard(69 Gross) and Kerry Bryan(65 NET)... both rounds during the Mmember/Member tourney - clutch shooting, guys.
The June 9-hole tournament had 26 entries, a very nice turnout. Let's keep up this type of participation, as it makes for bigger pots and more "points" to distribute.
Taking first was Bruce Titus (31), followed by Dennis Tramer (32.5),
Kirk Jondle (33) and Steve Liebeck (33.5). We'll be moving back to the BLUE TEES for the July 9-hole.

Hello Gentlemen

The June 14 Partner Best Ball Blind Draw started off rough but with a little help from my friends we righted the ship and everything finished well and on time. A big Thank You goes to Dennis Tramer for all his work on the computer for me. The results show Flight 1 was won by Dave Hasselman and Steve Friend at net 62. Flight 2 was won by Noah Busch and Joe Miranda on a cardoff with Bob Livingstone and Wayne Brown at net 61. Flight 3 was won by Pete Douglas and Darrin Mora at net 59 and Flight 4 was won by Shaun Ferguson and Ken Louie at net 59. All results are posted on the web site as well as in the hallway at the course. Thank you for all who participated and sorry to Dan Bellamy who was my blind partner.

The July 12 Tournament is the Red, White and Blue. The format is to count 4 net best balls from the red tees, 3 net best balls from the white tees and 2 net best balls from the blue tees. Each player will post their own score non-tournament from the White Tees. I have some openings for this tournament so if you would like to join us for this fun event please call me or email me to get in.

I will be taking sign ups for the August 16 Tournament at the general meeting, the second Tuesday of every month. The format is 3 best balls from the blue tees. We will be playing fivesomes as usual. Remember to get your name on a ticket before the meeting and place it in the pitcher at my seat. We will draw names after the meeting for tee times for the next month's tournament. It's the first time I have seen it: an eagle on #7 by Colin Boylan and an eagle on #18 by Noah Busch, to split all of the A-Flight skins points. All other holes except for #8 were cut. A-Flight skins can be tough to win as this month's results show. C-Flight's Carl Taylor and Ronald Wickham, with the only CTP on #9, were the only other players to make it to triple digit points. Carl Taylor hit it to 29.5 feet on #12 for a "Closest To The Pin" and then canned the almost 30' putt for a skin. Way to go Carl! The group of guys that I play with would call that a "bingo|Bingo|BINGO!" A total of 38 players collected Special Event points this month. This was the fewest I have seen in some time. I suppose it's due to only having Skins and Closet To The Pins.

Stay tuned for the upcoming July, Red White & Blue tournament Special Events. I'll be looking forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting night and on tournament day.

Well we all had a good time at Los Serranos, a lot of points were won. Lucero shot a net 66 on a hard course, Doug Jones won the gross with a 73. Some dummy forgot to put the par three makers out so there was more points in the pot. There were some unexpected point winners even yours truly and the Pres got in the act.

Los Verdes is filling up at record pace, better get to me in a hurry if you want to play.

The Weekender at Pala Mesa is getting closer, I need $100.00 deposit by the last week of August. The Entry Form is on the web site.

Gentlemen, here's a little tidbit for you, not that it will ever happen in this club. MELVINA plays his shot out of the bunker and it comes to rest against the Flagstick, but is not holed. MARK THE SHARK calls him a "luck bucket" and jerks out the Flagstick causing the ball to roll away. What is the ruling. Under rule 17-4/3 in Match Play SHARK incurs a 1 stroke penalty (18-3b) and in Stroke Play there is no penalty( 18-4). In both cases the ball is replaced against the Flagstick.

Congratulations to the ElDo staff for hosting the 2013 Long Beach Open. The course was in great shape , thanks to Mark Lilleberg and his crew for all there hard work. We had 4 teams participate in the Pro/Am, my team (Carl Taylor, Ed Fernandes) came in 4th and team Zamora came in 6th.

Flights matches begin this month. If you are signed up, it is your responsibility to ensure that you get your first match completed by the end of August.

The Red, White and Blue tournament was held in July and it seems that everybody had a good time. The pace of play policy in our tournaments is working pretty well, BUT we still have to try and keep up with group in front of you.

Don't forget to get a partner for the Partner/Partner Tournament coming up in September, this is also a very fun tournament with some different formats.

As always, your Board of Directors is open to suggestions on ways to make the club better. If you have a great idea, please let us know.

JULY 2014 MEETING MINUTES

The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Men's Golf Club was held on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included salad, rice, beans, tortillas, and all the fixins' for steak and chicken tacos.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Past President Tom Retterath (filling in for President Terry Fulford), who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 90 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Richard Dennison, Don Marmion, Tom Conlisk, and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous month's Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved.

New Members: They were no new members present.

Past President Retterath handed out the awards to winners of the just completed Club Championship (see article elsewhere in the Newsletter for a complete listing of all winners).

Director's Reports were as follow:

Jim Ridenour: We were able to get a few extra times for our July 26 Away Tournament at Los Verdes. See Jim immediately if you're interested. Deposits for the Weekender at Pala Mesa on October 3-5 are due soon.

Mike Montgomery: Raffle tickets for the Long Beach Open are on sale now. We'll have the drawing 15 minutes after the end of the meeting.

Mike Moraitis: Golfers of the Month for June were Scott Paul (Gross 71) and Dennis Tramer (Net 67). [Looks like Fish got his "one good round of the year" out of the way early this year]. We had 21 participants in the 9 Hole Tournament today. Pete Douglas and Jim Coates tied with a Net 35.

Cliff Aichele: Special Events for July will include $5 Skins, $5 Closest to the Pin on #3 and second shot on #16, and $5 Honey Pot (Net 70 or better).

Mike Vaughn: The Putting Contest winner was Bruce Bates, with a three way tie for second (Larry Grant, Doug Jones, and Corey Smith). The Flights Championship (Match Play) will begin August 1st, so see Mike to sign up ASAP. Plenty of spots still available.

Nick Zamora: The June Blind Draw Tournament featured some new winners - results are posted elsewhere in the Newsletter. July 12th is our Red-White-Blue Tournament, using all three sets of tees in order. We will count 4 scores from the Red Tee holes, 3 scores from the White Tee holes, and 2 scores from the Blue Tee holes. A few single spots are still available. August 16th is a Three Best Ball Tournament.

There was no Old Business or New Business.

The $50 drawing winner was Brian Dauk - the 10th name called.

Welcome to August! Our annual single elimination Match play Flight Championship tournament is underway and by meeting night at least 15 of the 40 first round matches will have been played. Of course the match for each month is to be played between the first and last day of each month. Matches are to be played at your 6 month LI the day of your match. Elimination matches will be played in August and September with the semi-finals in October and Championship Saturday held November 8. If for any reason you and your opponent need to play during the first week of the next month the players must contact me with the reason it could not be played before months end for special consideration. Failure to do this will result in disqualification of both players. A word to the wise is to review the Rules of Golf 2012-2015 for Match Play as applications and penalties are different from Stoke Play in a number of situations.

We have excellent tee time reservations on several Saturday and Sunday mornings of each month. American Golf has granted Flights Match participants to play their rounds at Resident rate. These times will be made known to all participants via continual email communication. If you want to play your match during one of these times you will need to let me know NLT than Wednesday afternoon of that week as times not filled will be returned to American Golf on Wednesday night to avoid us being responsible for unfilled reservations.

It was nice being back in July to run the Putting Contest. Due to the nature of most of the cups were placed on the south end of the green a Count Them All layout was created. Shooting 1-under 17, Corey Smith, Doug Jones and Larry Grant collected 2nd place winnings of 11 bones each while Bruce Bates took the winners share of the kitty, 37 bones, with a 2-under 16. Mark your iPhone calendars to be at the course meeting night Tuesday August 12 to traverse the challenging course that will be put together. The contest will be under way by 5:30 on the south green.

Hello Gentlemen,

I hope all is well on the golf front. The weather has been spectacular and El Dorado is in excellent shape so you should all be taking advantage of the situation and playing more golf. We had a big turnout for the July 12th Red, White and Blue Tournament. I guess people enjoy a little strange because we had a lot of exceptional scores. Dave Rubin and Omar Diaz beat the pro gross with a fine 65 and 67. Bruce Titus shot a net 65 to take the low single net. Other winners were: Gross Team in Flight 1 was of course Team Omar at 204, Net was Team Livy (without Livy) mmm. In Flight 2 Gross was Team Standish at 233 and Net was a tie (my bad) with Team Billy J, Olivier, O'Brien at 198. Flight 3 Gross winner was Team Bryan at 243 and Net was Team Seabass at 196. And lastly the "I Can't Find a Fifth" winners were Suttie, Schilling, Chamberlain, and Wysong. All the results are posted on the web and in the hallway. So see how close you came to cashing.

Our August Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 16th. It will be a 3 Best Ball Format. The first pitch will start at 5:50. I still have some openings left so call me or email me to secure a spot. The cost is $55 before game day or add $5 on game day.

September 13 and 14 is Partner/Partner time. It is another big tournament for the club. It is a 2 day event and the cost will be $120 per player. The format on the first day is 2 man scramble on the front 9 and alternate shot on the back 9. The second day is best ball front and count them all, aggregate, on the back. This is a mail in sign up so you can find the entry form on the web or in the pro shop at our computer. Please sign up early and make it easy on me for once. Just kidding I am your humble servant. I hope all of you are enjoying the summer. I think its somewhere between 110 and 150 degrees as I type this months Special Events Newsletter entry. The Red White and Blue tournament has to be one of my favorite tournaments and our group played well enough to finish in the points. Our Past President, Tom Retterath, was very successful with a skin on #9, #11 and a closest to the pin on #3. Some guys have all the luck, I mean skill. Good job Tom!

The net 70 or better honey pot paid even a little better than I thought with 33 members winning 20 points each. There were no skins winners in the B-Flight, so 200 plus points will carry over to the August 3 Best Ball Tournament. This should give the B-Flight guys extra incentive to shoot at the pin. Now because its so damn hot, I think I'll head out and see if I can sneak into Bob Livingstones backyard and go skinny-dipping in his pool. HaHa Sorry to any of you that might have actually visualized that.

I want to give a gigantic shout out to Tom Montgomery for his assistance checking players in at the scoring table, he was a great help! Maybe we have a new director in the making.

August 2014 Newsletter


The Handicap system of the USGA has one main purpose; is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The System provides a fair Course Handicap for each player This is also the goal of your Handicap Committee at EDMC.

The Handicap Committee reviews players scoring records and playing ability on a regular basis to help us level the playing field. It is no fun giving your opponent 6 shots per round only to be loose by 12 shots net.

The Handicap System works on 2 basic premises:
1. The player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round regardless of where the round is played,

2. The player will post every acceptable round for peer review the player and the players Handicap Committee have joint responsibility for adhering to these premises

Your handicap committee understands that everyone can have a career round and the handicap system provides for those rounds. The concern comes when the same golfers keeps scooting net 68 or lower on a frequent basis.

If the Handicap Committee has you playing to your Low Index or on a reduced Handicap list we are just trying to level the field in our estimation. If you are playing to your LI, you probably have won 3 or more EDMC events in the past rolling 12 months. Players who are on a reduced index list are probably shooting lower scores faster than the USGA Handicap System can catch up or having too many career rounds.

Players who have been reduced by EDMC have the right to appeal our decision by contacting any Board Member or Handicap Committee member ; Bob Livingstone, Kerry Bryan, Al Ostberg , or myself.

Gentlemen, many of you use Rangefinders. Do you know what is legal and what is not? You can use Rangefinders or a phone application to determine distance, and it is OK to share a Rangefinder with a fellow competitor or partner. There are some restrictions however. If your Finder has the capability of giving you wind speed and/or direction or the slope of the terrain it is illegal, even if that function is turned off. Also, the use of a Rangefinder must be specifically allowed in the competition in which you are playing; our Club does permit their use, but be careful in other events and make sure there is a Local Rule permitting their use!

Where has the summer gone? I cannot believe its already September. Holidays will be here shortly. Flights matches are underway. Mike Vaughn is doing a good job in organizing this event and keeping matches moving along. Id like to thank Rick Crowder (GM) for providing the Club with assigned tee times on the weekends to facilitate these matches, it is greatly appreciated. Ryan Boyker will represent El Dorado in the SCGA Tournament of Champions. Rich Boyker will represent El Dorado in SCGA Tournament of Senior Champions and Jerry Thomas and Michael Howard will represent El Dorado in the SCGA Four Ball. We will now have a one day play-off tournament between Don Didier, Mike Percher and Lee McCullough with the winner representing our Club in the Net Flight division in the SCGA Tournament of Champions.

Reminder, Board of Director (BOD) elections will be held in November. If you are interested in running for an elected or appointed BOD position, please let a current BOD member know. We always encourage new ideas and new guys to the BOD, that helps keep the club moving forward.

Terry Fulford: The Long Beach Golf Festival Pro-Am was a lot of fun, even at an entry fee of $350. The El Dorado Green Fees are increasing by $1 effective October 1; however, the Men’s Club will NOT be raising our entry fee of $55. The Partner-Partner is September 13 & 14. Sign up is via mail-in entry form, available on the Web Site.

Cliff Aichele: There were no “B Flite” skins winners in July, so the August “B Flite” skins pot is going to be extra large. Special Events in August will include skins, CTP on #3 and #17, and “Middle 6” – net par or better on holes 7-12.

Mike Moraitis: We had 17 players for the 9 Hole Tournament today. Winners were: 3rd Place – Bruce Titus; 2nd Place – Tom Seidl; and 1st Place – Terry Henson, with a net 31. Golfer of the Month honors went to Paul Standish – Net 65 and Dave Rubin – Gross 65.

Mike Vaughn: Putting contest winners today: A three-way tie for third; Terry Henson second; and Greg Englant first. There are a couple of weekend times available for the Match Play Flites Championship.

The July installment of "Golfer of the Month" is in the books, and the winners put up some sparking numbers. Dave Rubin takes the GROSS honors with a stellar round of 65. Paul Standish earned the NET title by throwing down a net 65 (edging out a group of net 66s). Well done, boys.

The August 9-hole event ended in a runaway, as Terry Henson carded 31 (we checked his math) to claim the top prize. Tom Seidl and Bruce Titus took 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Attendance (17) was down slightly in August - let's see if we can get 20+ players for September. Remember, more contestants = bigger payouts.
The September 9-hole will be played from the BLUE tees.

Team play is right around the corner, and we (Mel Collins, Dennis Tramer and I) will be building the Thursday Team roster over the next few months. "Tryouts" will be starting up in late October / early November, so please contact one of us if you are interested in participating.

I hope all is well and Golf is still on your mind. It is all I can ever think about these days, a couple more years and I will have it all figured out. Our last tournament on Aug. 16(3 best balls) was another huge success. With a little help from my friends we were able to get everyone out on time and finished early. That is very good for 170 players. WHAT A CLUB!!!!

The results were Flight 1 Gross 219 Team Omar, Net was Team Miller at 193, Team Ferguson and Team Montgomery at 196,Team Crowder 197. Flight 2 Gross 233 Team Drantch, Net was Team Moraitis at 196, Team Kirksey and Team Zamora at 200, Team Wilcox and Team Douglas at 201. Flight 3 Gross 246 Team Pearlman, Net was Team Rademacher 186,Team Fulford 196, Team Burkes 198, and Team Vaughn at 199. Individual GOOD JOB goes to Dave Rubin Gross 70, Brian Dauk Net 64, Pete Douglas Net 64 and The Braz Net 66. Congrats to all and thanks for coming. Everything is posted on the web so take a peek and see how close you came to the winners.

Next on the tournament schedule is our famous Partner/Partner held September 13 and 14. It is a 2 day event with a little twist. Saturday is a 9 hole scramble front and a alternate shot back. Sunday is a best ball front and count them all, aggregate back. To sign up you can send info to the P.O. Box, mail to me or put in the drawer at the Pro Shop. The cost is $120 per player. I must have all entries by the end of meeting night on Sept 9. There is no reason not to get this done early. Help a brother out, please.

On September 9th I will also be taking signups for the October Orange Ball Tournament on October 18th. We will be playing 3 Best Ball with the orange ball and the next 2 best balls. The cost will be $55 per player or $60 on gameday.

Summer is winding down and hopefully all of you have benefited from the long days and warm weather by playing lots of golf. This might be how Brad Wilcox and Steven Whitaker tuned up their games in order to rack up the points in August. These two guys took advantage of B-Flights carry over of Skins points, as well as shooting net par on the Middle Six, and scoring CTP points. WOW! What a profitable tournament for them. The middle six holes were just enough of a challenge that only sixteen players cashed in for 23 points each. September is the Partner Partner. This means Ill be doing Saturday and Sunday sweeps, and please remember this is a TEAM special event. And by TEAM I mean you and your partner. Sweeps will be $20.00 per day per team. I will be taking early sign ups for Special Events at the meeting and hope to see all of you there.

We are getting ready for the week-ender at Pala Mesa, it should be a lot of fun. We have close to sixty players .a few ladies will be playing Friday ,and again on Sunday after the tournament, we are going to have a nice hospitality suite set up with snacks ,and your favorite drinks. Terry is going with me to get the drinks so there will be plenty of Coors light, and Montgomery has asked for ample amounts of Kettle One.
The starting time on Friday will be at eleven. Check in with me at the Chardonnay suite #225,which is the hospitality suite, pay your $20 tournament fee and pay your green fee at the starter.

Handicap Newsletter

A great portion of the handicap process depends on the correct and accurate posting of your scores. In our monthly tournaments the player / marker is responsible for submitting a scorecard with the correct Hole by Hole scores listed for each player. The Tournament Committee (Board of Directors) is responsible for adding the individual players scores to come up with a team score (depending on the tournament format). This process is done with the aid of our computer and is checked by at least 2 board members. It is very difficult to read some of your handwriting when it comes to entering those scores in some cases.

Please take a few extra minutes to check you card to make sure the numbers you put down can be read legibility. Skin games or other wagers within your group can / should be put on a course scorecard. This small request would assist the board when entering your scores.

Repairing Ball Marks

Our Course Superintendent, Marc Lilleberg, has done a great job getting the greens in such great shape. Lets try to assist him in keeping them that way. I have noticed on our Tournament days that there have been several fresh ball marks left on the greens. All of these ball marks were not made by the public in front of us.

If each one of us repaired one or two additional ball marks it would help to keep the greens in great shape. I know that we all have additional time while waiting for someone to putt out that would not cause a delay in our pace of play.

GENTLEMEN, How many of you know the rule on a immovable obstruction. If you have sprinkler heads in front of you in proximity of the green and in line with the hole location, under the RULE 24 you are not entitled to a drop. However under Appendix 1, a club may adopt a local rule that entitles you to a drop if the sprinkler heads are within 2 clubs of the green and your ball is within 2 clubs of the sprinkler heads and the hole location is in line with your shot. EL DORADO does not have that local rule, so learn to chip better Terry Tinman Fulford.

Well, were into the Fall season even though Mother Nature still thinks its Summer!!! Well another monthly tournament is in the books and it was a good one. The Partner/Partner tournament is always a fun/nerve wracking, especially on the back 9 of day 1 when you play the alternate shot format (just ask our Ryder Cup Team). Afterwards in the bar, I heard plenty of "I'm sorry" comments that day when an errant shot was hit! The golf course was in great shape and I'd also like to recognize Nick for getting the tournament organized and for Livy for the handling the scoreboards. This month we have the the Dreaded Orange Ball which is another fun tournament.

2015 Club Elections is just around the corner. If you have any interest in running for an elected office position, please contact myself or any other Board Member to ensure your name gets on the ballot in a timely manner.

2015 renewal forms have been put in the mail, please ensure you renew by 10/15/14 or else you will pay the extra $20 penalty for renewing late. Any new member signing up for 2015 is eligible to play in our upcoming 2014 club events EXCEPT for the Christmas Tournament to be held on December 13th.

Your Board of Directors is open to suggestions on ways to make the club better. If you have a great idea, please let us know.

SEPTEMBER 2014 MEETING MINUTES
The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Mens Golf Club was held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner was very special this month. General Manager Rick Crowder and Chief Chef Ismael created some new appetizers and provided them to us at the meeting gratis (that means free!) to sample and give our opinion to them as to which ones we liked, didn't like, how they might be improved, and other suggestions for additional appetizers, etc. Appetizers provided included potato skins, wings, mushrooms, taquitos and pot stickers. Let Rick and Ismael know how much we appreciated this generous offer, and give them your feedback. Personally Id like another trial run before I can make up my mind!

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 90 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Jerry Leininger, Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Tom Conlisk, Don Marmion, Tom Retterath, Dick Scoville and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous months Minutes and Treasurers Report were approved.
New Members: They were no new members present. President Fulford requested a moment of silence in honor of long-time member Tom LeBrun, who recently passed away.

Directors Reports were as follow:

Bob Livingstone announced that several El Do Members are playing in SCGA events. Jerry Thomas and Mike Howard shot a net 60 in the 4 Ball Qualifier, and will be moving on to the next round in Moorpark, and Mel Collins qualified for the US Senior Amateur Championship. Congratulations guys!

President Fulford noted that Board Officer/Director elections are coming up soon. Anyone interested in running should contact Terry or any current member of the Board.

Dennis Tramer discussed SCGA (and El Do) rules regarding sprinkler heads around the green.

Tom Retterath announced the currently nominated slate for the Board for next year: Terry Fulford for President, Nick Zamora for V.P., Rob Kuehn for Secretary, Bob Livingstone for Treasurer, and Mike Vaughn and Cliff Aichele for Directors.

Jim Ridenour reminded us that the October Away Tournament is our Weekender at Pala Mesa on October 3-5. We have 48 golfers, and Jim is providing a Hospitality Suite.

Cliff Aichele announced Special Events for this weekend Partner/Partner Tournament: Saturday will be two CTP holes and two In-the-Circle holes; Sunday will be Skins, one CTP, and Beat the Pro. The Sweeps is a Team Bet only. Total buy-in for everything for the weekend is $45/man.

Mike Moraitis noted that the 9 Hole Tournament participation this month was very light. Honors went to Don Pichovich (1st), Sebastian Sturdevant (2nd) and Bruce Titus (3rd). GOM honors went to Mark Perry (gross 67) and Brian Dauk (net 64 on a card-off with Pete Douglas).

Team Play tryouts for Thursdays Team will start in early November. Contact Mike, Dennis Tramer or Mel Collins if you are interested. Our opponents will be Los Verdes, Lakewood and (probably) Brookside not too much travel involved.

Mike Vaughn putting contest had a 9 way tie for second, and a 2 way tie for first - Sea Bass and Terry Henson. The Match Play Flights Championships moving along. See Mike for a few weekend times that he has reserved.

Nick Zamora discussed the format for the Partner/Partner Tournament this month. Saturday is Scramble on the front, Crossover on the back, with a 3 drive each minimum on the front, Sunday is Best Ball on the front and Count Em All on the back. We have 35 foursomes scheduled. Players must post their own scores on Sunday. Nick noted that Retterath's Bandits did very well in the August 3 Best Ball Tournament. Saturday Team play tryouts are starting, with lots of new blood trying out. October is the Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament.
Jerry Leininger discussed why it is important for players to get in the habit of posting their own scores. If you have any questions regarding posting, call Jerry.

Can you believe it is October already? The Flight Championship matches are into the semi-final stage. The winners of their October match will advance to Championship Saturday, November 8. Our tee times are 8:04, 8:12 and 8:20. It is of utmost importance the Championship matches be played this day to allow for trophies to be ordered and personalized for presentation at the December meeting.

The October reserved times that are still available are Saturday Oct. 11 at 8:12 (4 spots), Saturday October 25 at 8:12 (2 spots) and Sunday October 26 at 8:04 (2 spots) and 8:12 (4 spots). If you and your opponent have not already contacted me to be placed let me know when you want to play ASAP. Reserved times not filled are released back to American Golf on Tuesday night, NLT than Wednesday afternoon of the respective week

The September Putting Contest was a Count Them All with (14) players. Shooting 1-under, 17 for a 7-way tie for 2nd place and 3 bones each were Dewayne Kirksey, Bruce Titus, Dan Ahearn, Corey Smith, Joey Schilling, Steven Whitaker, and Henry Degraaff. Partially figuring out the course to roll 2-under, 16 for the 3-way tie for 1st place and 21 bones each were Sebastian Sturdevant, Terry Henson and Monty Bisson. Mark your iPhone and desk calendars to be at the south putting green meeting night Tuesday October 14 to compete in the last Putting Contest of this year. Don't forget to calibrate your internal GPS and come ready to stoke some putts. It will be Aces Only with putts as short as 4 feet and no putt longer than 10. Any player rolling in 9 Aces will collect the entire pool. If more than (1) player does this it will be equally divided. The contest will be under way NLT 5:45 on the south green.

The August results for Golfer off the Month are in, and the winners are Mark Perry (Gross) turning in a card of 67; and Brian Dauk (net 64) who edged out Pete Douglas in a match of cards.

Our September 9-hole tournament was pretty lightly attended (9 contestants). Taking top honors was Don Pichovich with a net 33.5 (earning 25 pts), Seabass took second at net 34 (15 pts) and rounding it out was Bruce Titus at net 35.5 (5 pts). October 14 will be our last 9-hole tournament of the year, so don't miss out. We'll be playing the BLUE Tees.

Thursday Team Play is quickly approaching. I expect our first tryout session to take place on Thursday, November 13. A signup sheet is in the hallway, and I will contact everyone who signs up with more detail. The season is scheduled to begin on Thursday January 15, and will be as follows:

The format is a little funny but everyone hung in there and we all seemed to have a lot of fun. Even the new members who never played this format seemed to enjoy the golf. The October tournament is the Dreaded ORANGE Ball. We will play Sat.Oct.18. The format is 3 best ball and you have to include the guy who is hitting the ORANGE ball. Each team will get 3 ORANGE balls and must turn in 1 ORANGE ball with a signed scorecard or be disqualified. I will need your ORANGE ball line up by Thurs the 16th so I can print the scorecard correctly. This will help speed up check in as well as letting the computer figure out results. You can email your lineup or text or even call me but get er done.
At the general meeting on Oct.7, I will be taking signups for Saturday Nov.15, The Superintendants Revenge Tournament. This is a 3 Best ball event that is a little different then normal. The tees and pins are placed in special locations. The cost is $55 . Come see me at the table.
Finally our Christmas Tournament is creeping up sooner than you think and in order to qualify you must play in 3 of our events including away tournaments. So dont be caught with your pants down and lose out of playing in the best tournament of the year.

Even while battling through the heat, teams were able to shoot the low scores needed to grab either Saturday or Sunday Sweeps points. Team D. Martin/ C. Thomason in the C-Flight came out strong on Saturday with a net 55! WOW! B-Flights Ferguson Cannon with a net 98 on Sunday was untouchable. Brian "Gonzo" Gonzales, The Pro, went low on Sunday carding a gross 66. This was tough to beat except for two guys, Colin Boylan who carded a net 63 and Shaun Ferguson carding a net 64. Don't worry Jerry L. will be contacting the two of you with a special letter, just kidding. Nice job and way to hit it close and go low!

Brian Ball, David Green, Michael Pircher and Don Pichovich are just a few of the other players that did very well in Special Events this month. Please note that I will pay out Sunday sweeps in one envelope per team. This means its up to you and your teammate to split it up amongst yourselves. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

Well, we are getting ready for the weekender. Over fifty players on our way to Pala Mesa Resort. I think its going to be a lot of fun. What could be better than three days in the sun playing golf with your buddies? Speaking of fun, Im on my way to Costco with Terry and Fish this morning to get all the goodies for the hospitality suite. Im sure there will be plenty of Coors Lite
Some of the ladies will be opting for the wine tour on Saturday. I thought about skipping the golf, and going on the wine tour with the ladies. Its hard to shank a wine glass.
We also have a tournament coming up on November 1st to Rancho California. Ill take sign-ups for that at the next meeting.

Does it seem to you that you play a few strokes over your Course Handicap most of the time? Well thats normal under the USGA Handicap System Dean Kunuth

From the SCGA report on Handicap
the USGA handicap System is based upon the potential ability of a player rather than the average of all his scores. The USGA Handicap Research Team tells us that the average player is expected to play to his Course Handicap or better only about 25 percent of the time, average three strokes higher than his course handicap, and have a best score in 20, which is only two strokes better than his course Handicap.

The question the handicap committee has to ask is what is the correction that needs to be made to adjust for better than average play.
The USGA provides the Handicap Chairman / Committee the ability to adjust a players index in various ways but I would like to discuss one at this time; Odd of shooting an exceptional tournament score.

I can't believe its already November! Reminder that we are still accepting 2015 renewals but since were past the 10/15 deadline, all renewals now will be $125. Please get these renewals in soon so that SCGA doesn't drop you from the El Dorado club roster. I would love to see our club have at least 350 members for 2015. With this level of membership, our club can do good things plus it gives us the opportunity to have full fields for our tournament events! Don't hesitate to promote the club to your other golf buddies who aren't members!

The Orange Ball is always fun and nerve raking for me. I hope everyone else who participated had a good time even when that little Orange Ball made a "BIG" number.

Our big tournament of the year is coming up in December, so sign up early as this one usually fills up quickly. Also, at the November meeting check into Derbies as these are a lot of fun.

We also have an election coming up at the November meeting. Please come and vote for the 2 spots available for Directors. We have Mike Vaughn, who has done an excellent job for the last few years, Cliff Aichele who also has done a great job, Mike Moraitis who has been on the board for the last 2 years doing a fine job and is going to be Thursday team play captain next year and Matt Huntington who is looking to be on the board, and I am sure would do a great job.

The October General Meeting was called to order by President Terry Fulford at 7:01 PM under the Big Tent. President Fulford led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced the Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Mike Montgomery, Greg O'Brien, Bob Livingstone, Rich Dennison, Jerry Leininger, Dennis Tramer and Tom Retterath. Honorary Life Members in attendance: Bob Livingstone.

The September General Meeting Minutes and Treasurer's Report were approved as submitted in the newsletter.

Tom Retterath, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, repeated the slate that had been presented in September for the elected Board of Directors positions and sought any additional nominations for any office. Matt Huntington and Mike Moraitis were nominated to run for the Director At Large position along with Cliff Aichele and Mike Vaughn who had been nominated as part of the proposed slate. All other positions have one nominee. The election will take place during the first five minutes of the Annual Meeting on November 11.

Handicap Chairman and SCGA Delegate Jerry Leininger (in place of the in absentia Club Secretary) reminded everyone that renewals for the $105 fee would be accepted thru the Orange Ball Tournament on October 18. Renewals after that date will be $125. Post marks WILL NOT be accepted. Jerry will be attending an SCGA meeting designed to seek input, needs or requests from member clubs to make the SCGA better or more responsive. If anyone has ideas or requests, please contact Jerry. Jerry apologized for formatting issues in his latest newsletter article and reminded everyone that they MUST post within 48 hours of any tournament or away trip, and if they do not, their score will be posted and they will receive a P Score or penalty round, which is equivalent to the lowest of their last 20 scores. There was one P Score assigned from the Away Trip to Pala Mesa.

Assistant Captain Omar Diaz spoke on the upcoming tryouts and season for the Saturday Team. Captain Mike Moraitis did the same for Thursday Team. Signup sheets for both teams are posted in the hallway of the Clubhouse building.

Special Events Chairman Aichele recapped the Partner-Partner where nearly 1/2 of the participants cashed at least one Special Event and he discussed upcoming Orange Ball activities. In response to some comments, the closest-to-the-hole in November will be on hole #17 and will play approximately 125 yards.

Rules Chairman Tramer spoke on behalf of Entertainment Chairman Ridenour and accepted praise for the work both did on the Pala Mesa Weekender, and thanked the other Board members and wives who had helped with the event. John Wong had a Hole-In-One! The Rancho California event will be held on November 1, and this will be the last time the Club travels there.

Director Moraitis announced the 9-Hole results (Terry Henson finished 1st and was the winner of $35 for a net 31.5) and the Golfer of the Month winners (Colin Boylan with 63 net and Rob Owens with 75 gross).

Director Vaughn gave an update on the ongoing Flights matches that have all reached the semi finals. All results can be seen on the Club Website. Mike also announced the results of the last putting tournament of the year, which he believed to have had the largest participation during his tenure. $145 was paid to numerous players including Terry Henson (double dip on Meeting Day events) who had 7 aces to win $68.

Vice President Zamora gave an overview of the Dreaded Orange Ball, which will begin at 6:45 on October 18; for November we will return to about a 6:00 AM start. Nick announced the drawing names for the November signup for the Superintendents Revenge which will be a 5-some, 3-best ball.

Old Business: None

New Business: Bob Livingstone reminded everyone that a major tree program had just started that will remove about 60 trees that are dead or dying or whose removal would help the health of neighboring trees or improve pace of play or turf coverage. During this project, wood piled for removal would be deemed Ground Under Repair, but there would be no relief from stumps. After these trees are removed, 36 new trees will be planted in strategic locations.

The $50 Member Drawing was won by Bruce Bates, the 3rd name drawn.

Well October has passed us by and Flight Championship matches have been exciting. We are down to the Championship matches. Our reserved tee times for Championship Saturday on November 8 are 8:04, 8:12 and 8:20. The players who are playing for the championships will be Rich Boyker (won 5 hole playoff Vs Ed Fernandez) Vs. Tom Retterath in President, Bob Owens Vs. Bruce Titus in Vice President, Steven Whitaker Vs. Vern Cannon in Secretary, Harold Kline Vs. Jim Baber in Treasurer, and Bruce Bates Vs. Bret Hudzietz in the Director flights. Monetary awards will be presented to all of the competitors who reached the semi-final match and personalized trophies for the winners will be presented at the December meeting.

The October Putting Contest was an Aces Only event with (17) players and $145 in prize money. The course was set up with none shorter that 3 ft. and none longer than 9 ft. These were mostly flat or going uphill in hopes someone could card a 9. There was a 6-way tie for 3rd place sinking (5) and collecting 5 Bones (Sebastian Sturdevant, Corey Smith, Larry Bartley, Greg Englant, Larry Grant and Colin Boylin).There was a 4-way tie for 2nd sinking (6) and pocketing 12 Bones each (Todd Thiele, Rich Dennison, Danny Martin and Ken Louie). Traversing the layout (6) times allowed Terry Henson to fine tune the flat stick and drop (7) and pocketing 67 George Washingtons.

I am looking forward to setting up and running the Quad Club, Putting Tournaments and Flight Matches again next year. See you all at the November meeting.

The final 9-hole tournament of the year took place on October 14, and a couple of familiar faces claimed all of the points. In a limited (11 player) field, Terry Henson took top honors (and 35 pts) with a net 31.5. Pete Douglas claimed the other prize (20 pts) with a net 34.5. Nice work, boys.

In the September installment of Golfer Of The Month, Rob Owens took the Gross category, firing a 75. Colin Boylan grabbed net honors with a 63 Net. Congrats to Rob and Colin, as both now qualify to compete in the Golfer of the Year Tournament in 2015.

Tales from the Orange Ball Tournament: Golfers beware - a driver-eating evergreen has been discovered between the 11th tee box and 16th green - courtesy of Mike V Callahan. The tree eventually gave back the driver... at the expense of Chuck DeMarco's sand wedge.

First tryout for Thursday Team play will be held on Thursday November 20th. For those who have expressed interest, I will be contacting you within the next few days to discuss tee times. For anyone else interested, please feel free to contact me and we'll get you in the mix.

Another Day another Tournament complete for 2014. The Dreaded Orange Ball on Oct.18 2014 went smoothly even though I got a lot of grief for having to use Orange Balls. We had a huge turnout this year with 165 players and no blind draws. Thank you all for filling up your teams and giving me the lineups early enough to print scorecards before gameday. A big help believe me. A special thanks goes to my directors for their help with this tournament. A lot of hand scoring has to be done on this format and I appreciate the support.

Results show Flight 1 gross winner was Team McGhee, net was the up and coming Team Boylan. Flight 2 gross winner was Team Drantch net was Team Green. Flight 3 gross was Team Owens net was Team Hertzler. All results are on the web and in the hallway. Thanks to all that played. We did have to penalize a couple groups for slow play and we did have to DQ a team for losing all their Orange balls. So let that be a lesson for everyone, Be on time and don't lose your balls.

On Saturday Nov.15 we will be having our Super's Revenge or Monster Day Tournament. Don't be scared now as the yardage will be close to the combos and we will post from the combo tees. The format will be a 5 man team and 3 best ball. You will enjoy this one because it will be like dating a new girl (something a little different). So anyway, come see me if you want to sign up. I have a few spots left. You can email me or phone me. The cost is $55 on or before the General Meeting or $60 on game day.

I will be taking signups at the General Meeting Nov. 11th for the last tournament of the year (time flies when you are having fun), The Christmas Tournament. We will have a 7:30 Shotgun start on Dec. 13th. The format will be a 3 man 2 Best Ball event and you will be playing with another 3 man team for a total of 6 people on each tee. Each player must be a 2014 member and have played in 3 of our events over the year in order to qualify for this tournament. The cost is $85 to ride or $70 to walk. Entry forms are on the web or in the pro shop so sign up early to help me or it will cost you an extra $5 on game day.

Can you believe it? Dennis Tramer dominated the field with the most Dreaded Orange Ball Special Events points! Mr. Tramer won more than 3 times the average of the rest of the field. He was also the only player to break into triple digit winnings. Do you really think an unschooled eye would ever pick Dennis out of a lineup of golfers as the one to beat? We all know Dennis too well and he continues to amaze us with his limping and lumbering skills. Way to go Dennis You're the Man.

Of the remaining average ho-hum players, 8 were able to top 50 points. The First-5 net par or better event was just hard enough, and paid 23 or so players almost 7 to 1. We have the Superintendent's Revenge coming up this month so I just might make Marc the Super work a little extra by putting a couple of circles on the greens, maybe even one a par 4 or par 5; you'll have to wait and see. Don't forget to mark your calendars for our December 9th monthly meeting and raffle. Ill have lots of goodies including clubs, balls, booze and cash to raffle off so don't miss out.

We had a great time at Pala Mesa at the weekender. OK, the course was not in the greatest of shape, but a good time was had by all. It seemed like everyone was in the money – well, not everyone - there was me and my partner, Terry. We couldn’t blame each other; we both stunk up the place. But the hospitality suite and the drinks, snacks, and ice cold beer was great.

This Saturday, November 1st there is a drive trip to Rancho California. We have 36 players, and should be a real test.

Please don’t forget the survey on the web site. We are trying to find out your preference between Las Vegas, and San Vicente for next year.

Does it seem to you that you play a few strokes over your Course Handicap most of the time? Well thats normal under the USGA Handicap System Dean Kunuth

From the SCGA report on Handicap:

the USGA handicap System is based upon the potential ability of a player rather than the average of all his scores. The USGA Handicap Research Team tells us that the average player is expected to play to his Course Handicap or better only about 25 percent of the time, average three strokes higher than his course handicap, and have a best score in 20, which is only two strokes better than his course Handicap.

The question the handicap committee has to ask is what is the correction that needs to be made to adjust for better than average play?

The USGA provides the Handicap Chairman / Committee the ability to adjust a players index in various ways but I would like to discuss one at this time; Odd of shooting an exceptional tournament score.

The bottom line is that the lower the net differential that the lower handicap player plays, the higher are his odds. The lower your handicap, the more difficult to shoot a round below you net par

I hope that helps to explain some of the information used by the Handicap Committee for index reductions.

GENTLEMEN, How many of you know the rule on a embedded ball? If your ball is embedded in its own pitch mark in a closely mown area thru the green, (which would include areas in the rough that are fairway height like a mowed walk path from the tee), you are entitled to a drop as near as possible to the point where the ball lay, no closer to the hole without a penalty. If you are in the rough, tough luck; either play it or take a one-stroke penalty for an unplayable lie. RULE 25-2

Heres another tidbit. Jimbo Ridenour is on #7 at Eldo and hits a great 3 wood for his 3rd shot from 160 yards. As the ball is on the green and rolling right at the hole, Callaway Lilleberg goes racing across the green after a coot and he inadvertently kicks the ball while running and it goes in the lake. The ruling on this one is Jimbo would take a 1-stroke penalty and drop where the ball entered the lake. If Callaway had intentionally picked the ball up in his mouth and dropped it in the lake Jimbo would have been entitled to place the ball on the green as close to the point the ball was picked up with no penalty. RULE 19-1 & 19-1A

Our 2015 renewal process is in full swing. For you guys that wait until the last minute, remember to renew by 12/15 or you will be dropped from the El Dorado roster! Therefore, please renew at the General Meeting or day of the Christmas tournament. I am looking forward to a great 2015 with a lot of great tournaments. Team Play starts in January also, we have tryouts under way.

Reminder, our next General Meeting on 12/9 we will be having a big raffle put on by Cliff Aichele. You don't want to miss it! I am sure there will be golf stuff, booze and money!!

NOVEMBER 2014 MEETING MINUTES
The monthly meeting of the El Dorado Park Mens Golf Club was held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, in the Big White Tent. The pre-meeting dinner included chicken marsala, grilled veggies, angel hair pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, salad, garlic bread and dessert. The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Terry Fulford, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 85 members in attendance, including Past Presidents Rich Dennison, Jerry Leininger, Dennis Tramer, Mike Montgomery, Steve Shure, Tom Conlisk, Don Marmion, Tom Retterath, and (Life Member) Bob Livingstone.

The previous months Minutes and Treasurers Report were approved.
New Members: They were no new members present.

President Fulford thanked our members who are Veterans (and all other Vets) for their service to our Country.

Past President Retterath distributed ballots for the election, as we had 4 members running for the 2 elected Directors spots Mike Vaugh, Cliff Aichele, Mike Moraitis and Matt Huntington. There were no members contesting the other 4 elected officers carrying over from last year President Fulford, Vice-President Zamora, Secretary Kuehn and Treasurer Livingstone.

Bob Livingstone discussed a proposed amendment to the By-Laws to allow the President, with the approval of the Board of Directors, to appoint between 3 and 7 Directors (in addition to the 2 elected Directors) to the Board. Currently the President (with Board approval) appoints 5 Directors. This change would allow for more flexibility and provide additional help as needed to run the club, the monthly tournaments, etc.. Bob fielded several questions regarding the proposed amendment. The membership will vote on this at the December meeting.

It was then moved (and approved) to close the balloting.

Dennis Tramer discussed relief from an embedded ball in the rough. While SCGA does not grant relief, a local El Dorado rule does grant relief. He also noted that free drops are allowed if the chopped down trees interfere with your stance or swing, but no relief is provided from the remaining stumps. Dennis then clarified the difference between accidental and intentional Interference. Reporting for Jim (Entertainment Chairman) Ridenour, Dennis noted that the January Away Tournament will be at Rec Park, with sign-ups at the December meeting.

Cliff Aichele discussed Special Events at the November Superintendent's Revenge Tournament: a Triple Turkey (net par or better on holes 2-3-4, 8-9-10 and 16-17-18; three circles (one each on a par 3,4, or 5); and Skins. Total buy-in is $15.

Jerry Leininger reminded everyone that they must record their own score for the November Tournament from the Combo Tees.

Mike Vaughn presented the results of the Flights Championship: Presidents Flight Rich Boyker; Vice-Presidents Flight Bruce Titus; Secretarys Flight Vern Cannon; Treasurers Flight Jim Baber; and Directors Flight Bret Hudzietz. Mike did another fine job in running this event.

Mike Moraitis announced Golfers of the Month for October: Gross Doug Jones (74) and Net Sheldon Drantch (64). Mike reminded everyone what info needed to be provided on the scorecard to qualify for GOM. Thursday Team Play tryouts will start Thursday, November 20 at 9:00 am. Let Mike know if you're interested. Practices for Away Tournaments will probably be on Tuesday.

Tom Retterath announced election results. The two elected Directors are Mike Vaughn and Cliff Aichele. It was moved and approved to destroy the ballots.

Nick Zamora congratulated the two elected Directors. Nick noted that the October Orange Ball Tournament had a good turnout of 165 players; however, one team ran out of Orange balls (on hole #7!) and was disqualified. Full results are posted in the Newsletter. November's Superintendent's Revenge will have tees and cups in strange locations. Tee times run from before 6 am until after 11 am. Entry forms for the Christmas Shotgun are available on the Website. Its a 3 man team 2 best ball format with a 7:30 shotgun start. Sign-ups are due by 12/9/14.

There was no Old or New Business. We will post info on the Website regarding Derbies after the Christmas Shotgun Tournament.

Can you believe it is already December? 2014 has been a fun year. Of course the times spent at El Dorado, and with our friends contributed to that. The Flight Championship matches were played on November 8. The Winner and Runner-up were President: Rich Boyker def Tom Retterath 2&1, Vice President: Bruce Titus def Robert Owens 2-up, Secretary: Vern Cannon def Steven Whitaker 5&4, Treasurer: Jim Baber def Harold Kline 7&5, and Director: Bret Hudzietz def Bruce Bates 5&4. Trophies and money will be presented to the winners at the General Meeting next Tuesday December 9. Monetary awards will be presented to the Runner ups as well as those who made it to the semi-finals but journey ended there. Be sure to be at the meeting.

Let me thank you all for voting me back to this position. I am excited thinking about setting up our Quad Club team, holding the Putting Tournaments and of course finishing 2015 with the Flight Match Play Championships.

Quad Club will be played Saturday April 25, 2015 at Skylinks with tee times from 7:00 to 10:12. Our teams have been reduced from 40 to 25 players, spaced 8 minutes apart. The format with likely be one that does not require putting out on each hole, such as with a Stableford. Players who scored 3 points at El Dorado in 2013 have anchored places. Members who have that potential as well as the members who scored 2 will be recruited to put together a team to keep the trophy in our trophy case!

Happy Holidays Gentlemen,
I hope all your dreams come true and I hope your Santa gives you everything you want. As for golf, the results for the Super's Revenge are in and the participation was at an all time new high. We had 185 players which is a Super turnout. The position of the tee boxes and the wacky pin placements made the course play a little different, which is nice. We posted the scores from the combo tees so I think everyone had opportunities to make some low scores. The results show Flight 1 Gross winner was Team Vanderbroek , again, and Net was Team Ostberg. Flight 2 Gross winner was Team Ferguson, again, and Net was Team Henson. Flight 3 Gross winner was Team Lucero, again, again, and Net was Team Kerry, again. All results are posted on the Website and in the hallway at the club. Thank you for all your participation.

Our famous Christmas Tournament is next on the Agenda, slated for December 13th. The tournament is a shotgun starting at 7:30AM. Doors will be open at 6AM for breakfast and Check-in will close at 7:10AM. So be nice and get there early and make it easy on everyone. The format is a 3 man team 2 Best Ball. We will be playing as a six some. I will be paying Gross and Net using 3 Flights. We are using our 12.1.14, six month low index for all players. The cost is $70 to walk and $85 to ride, to be paid on or before general meeting night on 12.9.14. Anything paid after that is a $5 additional fee. Remember this is a shotgun start and everyone gets a little anxious, so arrive early to check-in and sign up for special events. We will be closing check-in at 7:10AM, so we can all tee off at 7:30AM. Upon completion of the tournament all teams must deposit there scorecards in the Blue Box located in the Bar Area. I have some openings for whole teams as well as some singles, so get in touch with me by phone or email and dont miss out on this great event.

December 9th is our last general meeting for the year and I will be taking signups for January 18,2015. It is the 5some Scramble Tournament. The cost will be $55. Remember this tournament fills up very quickly because of the lack of daylight so sign up early.

I trust that everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving. It was another great turnout for Special Events last month. Payouts ranged from what I consider a very low 6 points to a high of 230 points. By the way those 230 points were won by a new member, Grant Wilson. He won a skin on hole 16 and was one of 5 to conquer the Triple Turkey. It sure is great to see these new young players in the club even though they are going to whip-up on all of us older guys.

Speaking of young guys, it looks like its my time to turn over the Special Events reigns to a young guy, Mr. Matt Huntington. To loosely quote one of the former Special Events Chairman I will be handing over all of the gizmos, doodads, markers, measures and whatnot for Matt to look after. I'm sure Matt is going to bring some fresh new ideas to the table for us all to try and he will do a great job as the new S.E. Chairman. I've enjoyed this position and had the opportunity to meet a lot of members and learn tons of new names. I'll be looking forward to my continued participation on the board. See all of you at the December meeting and dont forget that we will have a great raffle to close out the last meeting of 2014.
